The late autumn wind was biting cold, slicing through Bailey's thin clothes. Dragging her weary body home, she froze at the scene in front of her.
Strangers crowded her doorstep, moving boxes and furniture with great energy.
A burly soldier informed Bailey that her family’s house had been sold.
Had parents had moved out, their luggage was packed and they were ready to leave.
Bailey felt her mind go completely blank and ran out before she could think any further.
Outside, Bailey spotted a familiar car parked by the roadside, seemingly waiting for her.
The car door opened, and Bailey's father, Harland, stepped out and walked toward her.
"Bailey, this might be the last time we see each other. We're moving away, and you have to go back to your biological parents." He said, his tone filled with reluctance.
Harland's thoughts drifted back to three months ago, when he was in urgent need of a blood transfusion.
When Bailey donated blood to him, it was discovered that they were not related by blood.
The revelation shocked everyone.
After recovering from his illness, Harland made every effort to find his biological daughter, Chloe.
Eventually, he succeeded.
Now, the Harland couple finally moved to a better house for Chloe’s sake.
Meanwhile they disregarded Bailey because she wasn’t their biological daughter.
"Yesterday the police found us and said that your biological mother would come to take you back today."
Harland said, patting Bailey’s shoulders, his emotions mixed. "When you get there, reach out to us if you are ever in need…"
Harland had learned from the police that Bailey's biological mother's family background was absolutely terrible.
They lived crammed together in the dark.
Those sunless slums!
The people there lived above a reeking ditch filled with rot.
Having a house in such a place was a luxury, and Bailey's birth family could only squeeze together on a dilapidated little boat.
All year round, several people huddle together in that cramped, narrow little boat, eating and sleeping in the same space.
As for using the bathroom, they have no choice but to relieve themselves directly into the river.
Over there, there were no such things as designer brands or attending prestigious schools, even eating a three square meal was a problem.
Bailey stood in front of Harland, seemingly reading his thoughts.
Her eyes were clear, without a trace of emotion.
She spoke calmly, "Are you finished? I'm leaving."
She turned and walked away, her back resolute, showing not the slightest bit of attachment to the place she’d once called home.
Victoria was instantly upset. "This bitch doesn't appreciate you. Over the years, you've spoiled her! So she went ahead and openly danced with Chloe’s mate at the ball, she even stole her boyfriend!”
Everyone knew that l boy was Bailey's Mate.
But after Harland brought Chloe home, the boy rejected Bailey because she was no longer the Alpha's daughter.
While she danced with him, Bailey didn't realize that they had already been together for a long time.
And despite the fact that she was the one who got betrayed, he ended up being treated as the third party.
"He really is an exceptionally outstanding Alpha child.” Chloe said sweetly, “He treats me so well. I know my sister has always liked him, and I really wish you could give us your blessing.”
Chloe added with an innocent smile. She has been back in the Moonlight Pack for a month now.
Bailey was unfazed when she looked at her, "Who told you I liked him?" She asked , her expression blank.
Chloe was stunned. She had expected that Bailey would be so pained by the news that she would break down crying.
Bailey glanced at her with disdain and coldly said, "If there's something wrong with your eyes, then you should go see a doctor. The person you treasure means nothing to me."
What?
Chloe wanted to lash out, but with Harland and Victoria present, she had to swallow her anger.
She had overheard her parents talking the day before, and the thought of Bailey going to live in a condition worse off than homeless people gave her a sense of superiority.
"Bailey, I know you don't want to go back to the slums. You must be very upset right now, right ?” She asked with false sweetness.
Chloe took an envelope out of her backpack and handed it to Bailey.
"Here is $500. I heard the conditions over there are awful. I wanted to give you more cash, but I heard the people there were generally shady, thieves and robbers everywhere. It would be unsafe for you to move around with a lot of cash.”
Chloe's eyes gleamed with anticipation, but her tone couldn't hide her pride and condescent. "500 dollars is nothing to me. You definitely need it more than I do, So take it. "
Victoria scoffed. "Don’t be silly, Chloe. that place is a bottomless pit, even ten thousand dollars wouldn't be enough.”
Bailey lips curled slightly. Did they think they could humiliate her with such a small amount? She could not have cared less.
A week ago, during the flood, Bailey had risked her life to save Chloe’s, dragging her through the flowing torrents to safety.
By the time the rescuers arrived, Chloe had already fallen into a coma, frozen and barely clinging to life.
When Victoria and Harland arrived at the temporary shelter, they rushed straight to Chloe's side , completely forgetting Bailey who had been critically injured.
Bailey lay in a daze on the ground, her hands and feet both numb from cold. But what really chilled her was the conversation between Victoria and Harland—
"It's been three days and she still hasn’t woken up; I guess she’s close to dying."
"Then it’s for the best. Once she's dead, we can devote ourselves entirely to Chloe and save ourselves from trouble."
Bailey was still unconscious, but she had heard every word and just like that, the last shred of hope he had for this family completely vanished.
Bailey didn’t even look at the $500 .
She turned to walk away but Chloe grabbed her by her hand, and forcefully shoved the envelope into her palm. "Sister, please accept it."
But just as her hand collided with Bailey's backpack...
Something fell out of it.
To everyone’s greatest surprise, it was a diamond necklace.
Chloe gasped and covered her mouth, "How could this be... Isn't that Grandma's heirloom? Why is it in your bag?!"
"Harland, just take a look! Bailey actually dared to steal Grandma's necklace.” Victoria shrieked. "I never expected that after raising her for so many years, we ended up with an ungrateful little thief!”
Harland was also stunned, “ But… how could this be?”
Bailey understood that this was an attempt to frame her for stealing, and tried to remain calm.
Sure enough, as expected, Chloe's face was full of disappointment and heartbreak,
"Bailey, that is Grandma's heirloom. Since when did you become so greedy?"
She paused for a moment, then added thoughtfully, "You should apologize to Mom and Dad. I can talk to them. Maybe they’ll be willing to let you stay.”
"Chloe, don’t waste your breath.” Victoria spat. “Even if she begged us with a bucket full of tears, we wouldn’t keep her!"
Victoria was furious. "She can forget about taking anything else from this house!"
Chloe turned to her and feigned understandingly, "Sister, I know you took the necklace with plans for the future. But you have to understand this is Grandma's heirloom... How about this, I'll transfer some money to you, will one thousand dollars be enough?"
What she implied was that Bailey stole the necklace to exchange it for money.
Several servants nearby couldn't help but add their two cents,
"Bailey is truly ungrateful. That necklace is worth over ten million dollars."
"No matter how short Bailey is on money, she should never have taken Grandma's heirloom. That necklace should be returned to Chloe; After all, she's no longer part of the Moonlight Pack."
"Over the years, we’ve never counted the money spent on Bailey, and Chloe even gave her an extra five hundred dollars. She's so kind."
The people around kept praising Chloe, and even resulted in comparing the two sisters.
The more they compared, the more they concluded that Bailey fell short of Chloe in every way.
Besides being a bit more attractive, Bailey wasn’t worth a single finger of Chloe’s.
Victoria snatched the necklace from Bailey's hand and said, "We've raised you all these years and have done our possible best!
This necklace belongs to our family, so stop dreaming! And before I call the police, you'd better get as far away as possible!"
