The blizzard had settled down after what felt like an eternity, the snow was cold and thick, the wind cooler.
The storm had been brewing for a while now, but if the white wolf believed in the divine destiny, it would've thought that the Moon Goddess herself had sent the storm at the right moment to protect its pack from danger.
Too bad it no longer believed in the goddess as she once did.
The white wolf looked at the two bodies in front of it. There were more of course, because they hadn't come alone, but the blizzard had separated them, but the wolf was sure that if they dug through the snow around them, the rest of the men will appear buried in the snow as well.
Blood stained the vibrant white snow a dark crimson. The human had never liked the color of blood but the wolf had an uncontrollable thirst for violence.
Both of them have seen too much, endured too much to just sit back and let things occur. The wolf liked to draw blood first, ask questions later. It was a fact of life that it had learned from experience.
"They just don’t seem to learn, do they?" Aya spoke to it after a long sigh, tucking the gun safely back into a pocket in her skirt. She had trailed along even though the wolf had warned her to stay back, but her stubbornness was unmatched.
The wolf snorted. Turned around, and started walking back.
No, they never learn, the wolf thought to itself, and they keep thinking that the next time will be a charm. The white wolf knew that this wasn't their final attempt and they will keep coming until they uncover the truth behind these snow covered lands and their white Alpha. After all, they had already been discovered and they will continue to attract predators to them like moths to the flame.
"Why you’re welcome, jiji (big sister)," Aya said with a mock bow. “I knew my aim is good but your praise is truly endearing.”
The wolf gave another snort, recognizing sarcasm even in this form, but waited till Aya joined her by its side. It would never leave a packmate behind and Aya was a favourite.
"What are we going to do with them?" Aya asked, pointing a thumb over her shoulder at the two bodies. There were more bodies behind them, four to be exact and all of them had been taken down by the white wolf. "You know they aren't dead, right?"
No, they weren’t dead and if they were, then they would have a problem, because one of them was an Alpha and the white wolf had sensed its power. If he died here, then there would be a war and that was something that wasn’t on the agenda…yet.
Sometimes, a war was inevitable…and by the sudden interest that every nearby pack was showing towards this part of the land, the wolf could sense the tides shifting. But there was still time for that.
As of now, the wolf had the invaders to deal with.
What are the packmates for? The wolf mind linked the pack members as she answered her question. The snow storm created a static that usually blocked pack communication but the white wolf had lived in these snow capped mountains for a long period of time, over three decades to be exact, it had learned to communicate around the static and so have its pack members.
"Oh!" Aya shook her head at her own silliness; she had forgotten they weren’t alone.
Put them in the dungeon. We'll need to question them. And don't go easy on the silver. Silver was the only metal that was poisonous to wolves. That was why the chains in their little dungeon had been made especially out of silver.
"Will do!" Aya gave a mock salute but the white wolf didn't look back.
She took off in a sprint, paws hitting the snow so softly that it didn't even leave a mark. She knew where she was headed.
About two miles north-east to where they had ambushed the trespassers, the snow gave way to a huge waterfall, this was one place where the water never froze, no matter how cold it got in the mountains. The force of the water was enough to tear anything to shreds as soon as it hit the surface.
There wasn't any river in sight; the water flow soon went underground, disappearing into the earth after coming about 3miles from the melting glacier. They called it the Jharna (waterfall). This part of the mountain had no name, but the wolf called it home, and the Jharna was a crucial part of their survival.
It was just across the waterfall, that the white wolf ruled its pack. A pack dominated by mostly females. The BloodPledge pack.
Those who knew its history, knew well to fear that name. And those who didn’t…they learned to fear the white wolf the hard way…but by then it was already too late for them. Because the wolf showed no mercy, especially to those who came with intent to harm.
Taking a deep breath, she let herself shift, welcoming the familiar pain and pleasure of the transformation as her bones changed shape and rearranged their position from wolf to human. The fur receded into her skin, and her structure changed.
It wasn't often that she shifted. One of the reasons why she was the strongest was because she was so close to her wolf, too close as some might say. But that didn’t bother her, giving into her animal instincts gave her solace, gave her peace.
After all, the white wolf had lost a great deal in the past.
Within the next few seconds, the white wolf was gone, and in its place stood a tall, lean woman with hair almost as white as the snow all around her and eyes as blue as the endless oceans.
In place of the white wolf, now stood Mikalya Carnell, the first ever Female Alpha in the world dominated by male shifters.
