Chapter 7

Don't touch anything.” The housekeeper chided the confused Ariel in hushed whispers. “I know you're the mistress of this mansion now, and I respect that. But Axel cherishes every decor in this house. Breaking one will unlock a side of him you don't want to see.” “Okay.. Ariel replied, still confused about what she had gotten herself into.

She occupied her time with admiring the house instead. They stepped into the living room. It opened up in a seamless flow of indoor-outdoor living. Plush custom sofas in rich neutrals faced a fireplace encased in black onyx. It had floor-to-ceiling sliding glass doors that revealed the breathtaking view. He was too wealthy to be true.

“What about Mr husband? I don't see him around." She asked nervously. The housekeeper — Marie tried to suppress her laughter. “Mr husband?.” She asked in amusement. The poor Ariel nodded. The stranger who saved her life had made it clear he disliked her.

And it felt weird calling him her husband.

“He's at work.” He asked me to move you to the left side of the mansion before he gets back.”

Ariel nodded. She was already feeling downcast. She could not help but worry about what her new life would look like. But leaving was not in her books, she had no tools to fight Bianca. No money, strength, connections or power. They'd kill her again.

Marie's flat shoes barely made noise when she walked. Her white apron was fastened smartly behind her neck. Her shoulder length messy auburn hair was packed in a bun in such a way it framed her sixty years old face. Marie had served Axel all her life. Her parents who carried out fetish practices had dedicated her to the fate god when she was a baby. And now she was human, she had served him wholly with all her heart. Axel had become more than just her sacred master , he was family.

The frail slightly bent woman walked ahead of Ariel as she showed her around. They got to a stop at the front of an eighth feet tall white steel arched door. Billows of ethereal smoke escaped and went back through the holes of the tightly shut door occasionally. Ariel was confused to see harmless smoke. “No one is allowed in here except god Axel.”

“It's the loom room.”

Ariel snickered before she could stop herself. Marie turned around to look at her sternly like she had committed sacrilege. “I know I probably lost my mind since I came back from the dead, but you can't mock me either. What do you mean by a god?.” She laughed, still amused by the look of disbelief on Marie's face.

Marie shook her head and walked off. “Wait!! Ariel called after her trying to keep up with her stride. She was lost in this mansion and the only person that could save her from getting on Axel's bad side was Marie. She seemed to know better than she did.

“You've been carrying that thing around.” Marie observed pointing at a shabby woolen bangle Ariel has been carrying about. “Yeah, she gazed at it fondly. “It's a gift from my little friend, he has a severe kidney disease.” She disclosed. Khan had made the shabby bangle and had gifted her during one of her deliveries. “Poor child, is he dead?.” She asked. “He was still alive the last time I saw him. I was trying to raise money for his surgery and surprise his aunty Rain, before everything happened to me.”

“You have a kind heart.” Marie complimented with admiration laced in her eyes.

“Thank you.” She blushed

“How much is the little guy's surgery?.”

Ariel rubbed the back of her neck nervously.

“The amount you seek is a slice of cake for god Axel, you just have to ask nicely.”

Ariel thought about it, she was right. Someone who lived in a mansion this grand could afford anything on earth.

“Ten thousand dollars. It's much but, if I try I might be able to….

“That's the gardener's salary.” Marie cut her off almost immediately. Ariel's jaw dropped in surprise.

“Does the gardener need extra hands? I can prune flowers and trim as well." She informed the amused Marie.

“No ma'am, you're the mistress of this house you should not be doing a job as lowly as that.”

“But I don't mind, I….. Ariel's sentence was cut short.

Axel breezed in just then with a gentleman clutching a briefcase and some files. His short auburn hair and glasses framed his graceful face. He and Axel looked like old time friends. They walked up to the stunned Ariel and Marie.

“This is Dean — my lawyer, he'll wed us. Marie is our witness.”

Marie’s mouth hung open, she found it difficult to close it. Ariel was experiencing the most tacky wedding she had ever seen, the only difference was the fact it was hers. The young stoic looking lawyer quickly brought out some files and a pen from his briefcase and handed them to Ariel.

“Sign here.” He points a horizontal line on the footer of the cream colored paper. Ariel opens the pen and tries to read through the paper, her action was met with a glare from the impatient lawyer who looked like he wanted to run off. He was staring daggers into her skin. Reluctantly, she signed beside Axel's perfect cursive signature. What more was there to read, she was already dead. Axel felt fulfilled, if a god killed a mortal and bond with their reincarnate by marriage or blood, they'd be forgiven. He'd soon have no use for Ariel. He brought a ring from his breast pocket, raising the surprised Ariel's hand, he slid it down her finger, and shoved a ring in her hand which she reluctantly wore him. Dean clapped and signaled Marie to join with his eyes. She reluctantly clapped.

“Sign here ma'am.” He beckoned in miss Marie, extending the document to her. She diligently signed on the witness corner.

“Congratulations Mr Axel and miss newly wed, thank you for your time. I hope to meet your lovely babies soon. He brought down his glasses and raised the corner of his eyebrow at Axel in a bid to tease him. Ariel coughed uncomfortably as Marie led her out. Axel walked off with Dean toward the entrance of the mansion. This was it, it was time to go back to the sky.
