Chapter 16

Ariel was exhausted. It was another day of working past her work hours. Almost every member of the marketing team had piled incomplete research papers on her desk. She was still not done. Feeling sleepy, she clicked away on the keyboard so she won't have to work much the following day.

Her role was becoming clear, cruel Axel had hired her to become the company's errand girl. The huge office building was almost empty, only the occasional clicking of her keyboard and the silent hum of the electronic appliances in the office could be heard.

The time displayed on her phone screen alarm her senses. Marie had gotten her a new cell phone. At this point, she was like the mother she never had.

Ariel skims through the pile of papers left and decides to pile them up. She set them aside on her desk and dismissed for the day.

The air was chilly, she could still smell the petrichor the rain had left behind. Although it was night, the city buzzed with activity. The psychedelic lights at the clubs flashed with vigor. She could feel the faint pulse of the music coming from within its building. Ariel smiled. It had been a while. Damian had introduced her to clubbing. But she turned out to love parties more than he did. She knew she'd like to go clubbing again, but she just did not feel like she was in the right frame of mind yet.

Just then, there was chaos on the road. A truck was horning very loudly with all it's might. Ariel concentrated on the proceedings with full attention — curious to know why the truck was horning that much. Then, she saw him. The old man limped as he crossed the road. He'd look back sharply to see if anyone was following him. It felt like someone was chasing him. He wore an olive green hoodie and black pants, his black baseball hat shielded his face from full glare.

There were noticeable festering wounds on his neck and his right wrist. His eyes darted round like missiles, looking for the nearest corner to hide himself.

Then, Ariel saw it. The truck was coming in full velocity, it was heading for the injured limping man. He was going to die if no one did anything. But thankfully, she was closer to the oblivious man than anyone else. He was so occupied in his thoughts he didn't seem to notice he was a few seconds away from death's door. “Watch out!!!.” She screamed. But the man was deaf to her voice. Without thinking, she ran with all the momentum she could muster, and pushed him out of the road as the truck sped past. They both fell on the cold tarmac on the side of the street. The man grunts in pain and struggles to get on his feet in a hurry. Ariel stands with much difficulty, she had grazed her knee in her attempt to rescue him. It was bleeding.

She brushed off the dirt on her thrifted jacket that had threads that were out of place. “Are you okay sir?.” She asks the old man in concern. He nods and limps away without showing any form of gratitude to Ariel for saving his life. She was hurt, but she felt like a hero.

Just then, it was like time sped, her body felt incredibly light. She found herself standing on the peak of a sky scrapper in front of where the man had almost died. Axel came close to where she stood, and looked at her sternly. His eyes were blazing with anger.

“Why did you save him? Do you have any idea how hard I worked to make sure he dies? He questions the surprised Ariel who was searching his eyes for a little hint of unseriousness, because there was no way in the world he was serious. Was he really angry he failed to end someone's life?

“ He has lived longer than his life expectation.”

His low raspy under-toned deep voice, pierces his message through the night.

The accident earlier was no coincidence, it was Axel trying to kill a poor old man. Although he was not exactly aged, he was old enough to pass for her father.

“How can you be so heartless?.” She cried, but he was completely unfazed.

“How can you be so cruel ?!!.”

“I owe you no explanation fleshling.”

“You tried to run an old man over with a truck!!.” She screamed it into his head, hoping the gravity of what he had done would sink in.

He angrily grabs her by the neck and takes a few steps forward.

The force makes her stagger back wards. She is leaning her back on the railing of the dangerously tall skyscraper.

“Now you've saved him, you'll die in his stead.” He snapped, and pushed her off the top of the six hundred meters tall skyscraper.

Ariel screams as she dreads the painful death that was waiting for her once her back touches the ground. But instead, her body felt very light like it did the first time she was teleported.

She falls into a cold shallow lake. Gasping for air, she swims out immediately, shivering. Tears build up in her eyes as she wonders what she had ever done to Axel. She looks at the strange place, she had no idea where she was. His over familiar figure took slow calculated steps towards her, both hands were tucked away in his pockets.

He looks at the shivering Ariel who had just landed in the coldest lake in the city. She was completely soaked, her long black hair was dripping wet. Her sexy manga lashes had matted together.

Her eyes were laced with anger as she looked at the evil god standing before her.

“I'll really kill you next time fleshling, don't interfere. The human life has no meaning. When they live all they want, it's best they die when they should.”

“Will you try to kill him again?.”

“Of course little miss hero, no one escapes from me.”

She breaks down in tears. It all made sense, he was an evil creature, that was why most people's fates were so cruel.

“Don't kill him, please.” She sobs.

If she had a father, the man from earlier would be around his age. The realization had overwhelmed her with sorrow. He could be someone's parent.

Axel sighed and turned on his heels. “Have fun finding your way home.”

He smirked and walked away like a model on a runway show.
