“I don’t want anything from you,” Alexander’s voice came through the phone, calm but firm. “But Mia wants you to join us for dinner.”

My throat went dry, and for a moment, I couldn’t find words. Alexander had Mia? He was the one who took her from daycare? Why would he do this? Fear gripped me, my heart pounding so hard it felt like it might burst. My mind raced with questions, each one more terrifying than the last.
