Elara's eyes darted to the door, fear etched on her face.

But before the guards could burst in, a tall, dark-haired man appeared in the doorway, his eyes flashing with warning.

I know it. Maddox. He's here.

"Stand down," he growled, drawing out his sword.

The guards hesitated, unsure of what to do. Dirna appeared behind them, her face twisted with anger. "Maddox, what are you doing? She's going to harm him!"

Maddox's gaze never wavered from the guards. "I'll take responsibility, Dirna. ...
