Chapter 5 A Place to Sleep

Watching her leave, Sebastian remained silent for a moment before turning to the nanny."Nana... who was that girl?"The woman lowered her gaze, uncomfortable."I'm not allowed to talk about that, young man.""Nana, I demand that you tell me who she was and why she was in my room."The nanny sighed and sat on the edge of the bed."She was out looking for work. I felt sorry for her and offered to let her in. I spoke to her mother about hiring her, and she accepted. I was showing her her room and putting on clean sheets when... when everything happened."Sebastian stared at her."What's her name?""I don't know... I don't remember. It was her first day."Sebastian clenched his fists."Didn't she tell you where she lived?""No, young man. I just know she wasn't from the city."Sebastian remained silent, his mind filled with thoughts and regrets. He had to find that girl. He didn't know why, but he needed to see her again. The nanny looked at him and saw how worried he was. She sighed and decided to tell him the truth."Young man, I gave her some money and an address. If you want, I can call my sister to see if she's arrived yet."Sebastian nodded immediately."Yes, Nana, call her."The Nana picked up her phone and dialed. After a few seconds, a familiar voice came on the other end of the line."Hello? Hello, sister, How are you?""Fine, and you?""Fine. I'm just calling to find out if a girl I sent has arrived."There was a silence on the line before the voice answered:"No, sister, no one has arrived here.""Are you sure?""Yes, sister. If she arrives, I'll let you know.""Okay. Thank you. Goodbye."The Nana hung up and looked at Sebastian worriedly."Nothing, young man... the girl never arrived."Sebastian lowered his head, feeling a weight on his chest. He rubbed his face with both hands, guilt consuming him."What am I going to do, Nana?" I feel guilty... I feel like the worst of men.The nanny approached and took his hand tenderly."Don't say that, young man. One day you'll find her."Sebastian sighed and nodded."Thank you, nanny... for your words and for always being with me."Mariana finished her workday exhausted but grateful. She had worked hard cleaning tables, sweeping, and washing dishes in the cafeteria, but at least she had some money in her hands. The owner, Mrs. Carmen, handed her her pay for the day with a smile."I'll see you early tomorrow, girl," the woman said, crossing her arms."Yes, ma'am. I'll be here at six," Mariana replied gratefully. She hesitated for a moment before asking:"Ma'am... where could I find a hotel for the night?"Carmen looked at her carefully, as if analyzing her situation."Come, join me."Mariana nodded and followed her out of the café. They walked a block until they reached an old residence with a large wooden door. Carmen knocked, and after a few seconds, an older man let them in."Good evening, Don Eugenio. Do you have a room for rent?"The old man shook his head."I'm sorry, Carmen, but we're full."Just at that moment, a young woman came out of one of the rooms and overheard the conversation. She approached with a friendly smile."I can rent you a room. I live alone, and it would be nice to share the expenses."Mariana looked at her in surprise and nodded shyly."Thank you... my name is Mariana.""I'm Clarisa. Come, I'll show you the room."Carmen patted Mariana on the shoulder."Okay, girl, then I'll leave you in good hands. Remember, tomorrow at six at the café.""Yes, ma'am. Thank you for everything."Carmen said goodbye and left. Clarissa led Mariana upstairs to a small but cozy room with a single bed, a closet, and a window overlooking the street."What do you think?" Clarissa asked.Mariana looked around the room and nodded with a genuine smile."It's fine; I like it.""Great!" Clarissa said. "I'll drop you off. I have to work. I'll get home early in the morning, so don't wait for me."Before leaving, she pointed to the small kitchen."There's food there if you want dinner. See you tomorrow.""Thank you, Clarissa."Mariana waited for her new roommate to leave. She gently closed the door and sat down on the bed, feeling a bit of peace for the first time. She was far from the mansion, from Sebastián, from Beatriz... but could she really start over? She sighed and let the tears roll down her face. Although the pain remained in her chest, at least that night she had a roof over her head.Mariana sank down onto the bed, feeling the weight of everything she had experienced in the last few hours. Her exhausted body barely lasted a minute before surrendering to sleep. For the first time in a long time, she slept soundly, uninterrupted, although her rest wasn't free from nightmares. In her mind, she relived the pain, the despair, and the muffled screams in that room of the mansion. She tossed and turned restlessly in bed until the first rays of sunlight woke her.She rubbed her eyes and looked around. Her roommate, Clarisa, hadn't arrived all night. Mariana wondered what she was doing, working until dawn, but decided not to dwell on the matter. She carefully got up, made her bed, and left everything in order. She washed her face, smoothed her clothes with her hands, and hurried out of the dorm. When she arrived at the cafeteria, Mrs. Carmen was already preparing for the day. Mariana took a deep breath and entered."Good morning, Mrs. Carmen!"The woman looked up and gave her an approving smile."Good morning, girl. I see you're punctual... I hope you continue like this forever.""Yes, ma'am. I'll do my best.""I hope so. Now put on your apron and start cleaning the tables. We have a lot to do today."Mariana nodded determinedly. Although her heart was still aching, she had found a small refuge in this new job. All she could do now was keep going.
