I felt like the worst kind of man, the kind I had sworn I’d never become.

As I watched Adina step back from me, her face pale with exhaustion and tears still shining in her eyes, I realized I’d done this. Every broken piece between us was my fault. I’d told myself I was protecting her, keeping her safe from the weight of the truth, but all I had really done was build a wall between us brick by brick until she couldn’t see me anymore.
