SONIA'S POV:
I was on my way to Laura's room, I hadn't seen her all morning so I was sure that she was dead and since no one had the audacity to go into the Alpha's room, I had to go in, at least to raise the alarm that their Alpha had died.
As I approached her chamber, ready to scream, I saw her walk out and lock the door.
“Laura?” She turned to face me. My shock knew no bounds. I was frightened and my hands began to shake. I was about to speak but words couldn't come out. I watched her drink it, she drank the mistletoe, powerful enough to kill any wolf so how was she still alive?
She looked at me strangely, bringing me back to my senses.
“You’re alive?” I half exclaimed, half asked.
She looked at me, at first surprised, then laughed.
“Sonia don't be so dramatic,” she laughed even harder
“ I only had a few bottles, sure I was drunk but I wouldn't die from a night's drinking.”
I was shocked, too confused to join in with her laughter. She was supposed to be dead, this was so unexplainable, I poisoned the drink, and I watched her drink it. Unless… did that good-for-nothing old bitch give me a fake poison? I'll deal with her if I find out. But what about the stomach ache and the dizziness? There was no way the bitch could alert Laura as I was always with them.
“Sonia, bestie?” I jerked back to reality.
“I've been speaking to you, are you alright?”
“Yes, I am. I'm just… surprised that you're okay. What about your stomach upset? Didn't you almost die?” I was perplexed and shocked, uncertain of if I was dreaming or I was seeing things.
“Sonia? Did you expect me to die? Or did you plan something?” She asked raising an eyebrow. I couldn't let her suspect me, her being confused about my sincerity was already bad enough. I had to do something, she mustn't suspect a thing.
“Did you poison me or hire rogues?” That brought me back to my senses.
“How can you say this?” I feigned anger.
“We've been best friends since child and now you stand here and accuse me? What's wrong with you Laura? Ever since the death of your parents, you've been acting weird, we understand you're hurt but don't lash it out on people like that, don't take it out on us. First, you killed Elder Aleric and now you're blaming me for wanting to kill you? This is not the best friend I know!”
I knew this act got to her because her facial expressions were that of regret and repentance.
“Listen Sonia I…”
“Nothing Laura, I only wanted to check on you, you're okay, that's fine.”
I quickly walked away, avoiding the omegas looking at my vexed face. I needed to shout, to let it all out of my chest.
I walked into my room and locked my door, my face swelling and reddened. I angrily threw my vase on the floor, watching it shatter in pieces.
“Arrghh!!” I growled loudly, Laura was after my life. I woke up with the joy and hope that I'd be announced the new Luna today with the help of my grandfather, the sudden twist of her being alive was shocking.
“How did she even survive?!” I screamed up to the moon goddess.
“Why are you punishing me like this?”
My frustrations were endless. It seemed like the entire world hated me. The moon goddess, the pack, my luck even I hated myself.
And Laura, she had everything, everyone's favorite person, she only had a few troubles and that was it, nothing else. I had to be Luna, I had to, it's my destiny. And since somehow Laura kept escaping death, I had to do something drastic.
*****
“Sonia I can not do what you're asking me to, it's just too much”
“But it's the only way to achieve our goal Grandpa, and you were the one who put it in me, who told me that it is my destiny, why are you backing out now?”
I was so sick of this old man being a chicken, backing out of easy ways to get rid of our problem. I was about to walk away and figure this out myself when something struck me.
“Grandpa, is there any possibility that Laura is supernatural?” He paused the work on his laptop and looked up at me.
“And why do you think so?”
“I mean, she has escaped every plot of ours and even now the poison I gave her yesterday didn't kill her.
It just traces but down to her having some sort of powers.” It made more sense than I had expected.
Grandpa sat there looking into his papers like an answer was written there.
“Grandpa?” I called after a moment of silence.
“I think you're out of your mind child. You need to calm down, you're desperate and insinuating things.” He let out rather calmly and continued his work. I looked at the grey on his head, even with all that he still had little knowledge of things.
“Is there any other explanation then?”
“You must have made mistakes in your plotting. The only possible explanation for what you're insinuating is either she has gone rogue or she has been… no, that's not even possible.
“She has been what?” I asked, curiosity getting the better of me as I leaned in closer to where he sat on his desk.
“It has only been said to happen once in the many millennia that werewolves have lived, and it was granted by the moon goddess's twin sister, Elena, the goddess of darkness. The reborn is the beast of the east. The moon goddess hasn't reborn anyone, I do not know if she has the power to. Laura can't be reborn, it's very impossible.” He finished.
Grandfather was right, it was indeed impossible. Laura had never left my side for a minute and she had never mentioned it. Surely something was wrong with her but she wasn't a reborn.
“Grandfather” I called staring into space.
“We'll need the specter immediately. Desperate times call for desperate measures.”
