Chapter 88 Song Mianhe

It still took several days to rebuild the ancestral hall without blue stones. After rebuilding the hall, people needed to worship their ancestors. For many years, people of Zhiben Hall had not been in Fengzhou. Now, some of them came back, including the old and the young. Except those who supervised the process of rebuilding the hall, others had to pay a visit to relatives of the Wei Family.

Therefore, they were supposed to visit Ruiyu Hall.

In this morning, Wei Changying seriously told Mrs. Huang and Mrs. He, “I want to be brilliant today. If the hairpin and rings are not valuable enough, please lend something more valuable from my mother or my grandmother.”

“The royal heir of Duke Jingping died this year, so it is not proper to be gorgeous in appearance.” said Mrs. Huang, grinning, “What is more, Wei Lingyue is an excuse by Madam Su. She does not deserve your much attention.”

Mrs. He added, “Because Madam Su was in a good mood, she gave Wei Lingyue the Agarwood bead bracelet. I have a lot of bead bracelets like that one. It is far less precious than your pair of bloodstone hairpins, let alone “Lu Hu,” a sword brought to you by the in-laws personally. First Miss is a wife-to-be of the Shen Family. Wei Lingyue is not better than you at all.”

Wei Changying pouted and said, “My grandmother was angry about the Agarwood bead bracelet. When I know that Wei Lingyue is going to come today, I am not happy.” What was more, the assassination was not talked about in public. Was she not allowed to complain it in private?

“Don’t worry, First Miss. Today, Old Madam of Zhiben Hall will come to visit Old Madam Song. She is always not a worthy opponent of Old Madam Song.” Mrs. Huang and Mrs. He glanced at each other. When Old Madam Song was in the Capital City, she often quarreled with Song Mianhe, her common younger sister. Their poor relation was known by servants of the Wei Family there.

Wei Changying who grew up in Fengzhou did not know what had happened between Old Madam Song and her younger sister if people did not tell her.

Now Mrs. Huang told the conflicts between Song Xinrou and Song Mianhe to Wei Changying. She said with a smile, “Song Mianhe has fought with Old Madam Song for several decades, but never wins. This time, she comes to Fengzhou and has to visit her older sister. So, the women of Zhiben Hall must be worried that they would be insulted, but they have to come here.”

After hearing this, Wei Changying was more interested in it and said, “Does my grandmother today plan to bully them? It sounds interesting. Come on, dress me up, Granny. The target is Song Mianhe, so I do not care about Wei Lingyue. Let it go. She is not worth my splendid dress.”

Mrs. Huang agreed with it. She nodded and said, “You are right, First Miss. Not everyone is worth your brilliant dress.”

Among the new autumn clothing, finally, Wei Changying chose an ultramarine dress embroidered with peonies. The dress was elegant and not suitable to a heavy makeup. Therefore, she wore a light makeup. Her hair was made into a bun decorated with a few bead flowers and step shakes. When she arrived at the hall, she found that Old Madam Song wore a half-new, olive yellow upper shirt with wide sleeves and a blue dress as usual.

As Wei Changying expected, Old Madam Song did not like Old Madam of Zhiben Hall. She was not willing to wear new clothes. She wanted to show her dislike of her younger sister.

Madam Song and Mrs. Pei led people of Zhiben Hall into the hall. As a younger generation, they wore formal clothes for welcoming guests.

Song Mianhe, Old Madam of Zhiben Hall, was old. According to her outline, she must be very pretty at her youth. She wore an indigo brocade dress embroidered with a pair of deer. Her gray hair was made into a bun. She entered the hall, her hand supported by Mrs. Duanmu, her first daughter-in-law.

Old Madam Song was sipping tea and chatting with her grandchildren. When she saw a group of women led by Song Mianhe, she still sat on her seat. Putting the teacup on the table, Old Madam Song casually said, “Mianhe, we have not met for decades, and now you cannot walk by yourself. You have already been a broken-down buffer.”

Song Mianhe looked indeed tired. It was no wonder. As an old woman, she did not rest yet after a long journey from the Capital City.

After hearing her lineal sister’s words, Song Mianhe was not angry, but said thinly, “Right, we have not seen each other for many years. I want to make you happy. Don’t you want to see that I am weak? If I were in high spirits, you would be disappointed.”

Two old madams showed their mutual hostility. There was a silence in the hall.

Old Madam Song said, “You do not change at all. You always think too highly of yourself. You cannot destroy my pleasure, can you?”

Song Mianhe sat on the lower seat and waved her hand to her first daughter-in-law to stand beside. She said, “If so, why not introduce your younger generation?”

“Are you qualified to teach me how to do things?” Old Madam Song sneered, watching all the people in the hall, and asked, “It is your younger generation that does not know how to be polite. Don’t they salute me?”

Song Mianhe answered, “They are polite in front of others, but they are scared of your dignity. It is no wonder.”

Old Madam Song said, “Old Madam in Zhiben Hall is humble in background. So her descendants are not generous.”

“As for generous character, who can compete with your lineal granddaughter?” Song Mianhe’s eyes narrowed. She suddenly looked at Wei Changying nearest Old Madam Song, and coldly said, “I guess that you must Wei Changying. I thought that I would not encounter you. Instead you appear here.”

There was an air of anger flashing in the eyes of Madam Song. When she was about to retort, Wei Changying answered clearly, “Old Madam, you overpraised me.”

Wei Changying was poised and elegant. She seemed to take Song Mianhe’s praise seriously, so she answered in a modest manner.

Stunned for few seconds, Song Mianhe said with a sneer, “Your answer is worth it.”

Wei Changying beamed and responded sensibly, “My grandmother is a lineal daughter of the first wife. I have been affected by her since my childhood. You are a daughter of concubine. Compared with your grandchildren, I am politer. It is reasonable.”

Madam Song burst into laughter.

She did not show her obvious dislike of Song Mianhe like Old Madam Song out of face. Actually, she was not afraid of Song Mianhe at all. Song Mianhe was a daughter of Song Dan, the former Head Family of the Song Family in Jiangnan. However, Song Dan had passed away. The incumbent Family Head was Song Xinping, Madam Song’s father and the successor was Song Yuwang, her lineal older brother. Now, she raged about that Song Mianhe had discussed her daughter. She did not show any respect to Song Mianhe, smirking, and said, “Do not mind it, aunt. Changying is my beloved daughter. She is spoiled, so she always says what she thinks.”

Wei Changying added immediately, “I never lie.”

The first daughter-in-law and the granddaughter in Ruiyu Hall had piped up, so the women of Zhiben Hall did not stay still any more. One of them spoke out, “When I was in the Capital City, I heard about Old Madam Song in Ruiyu Hall. Then I thought it was merely the gossip. However, it is true today in my view. We come here for a visit with my grandmother, but Old Madam Song and your first daughter-in-law do not welcome us. Your manner is far from what a member of the Wei Family should be.”

It was a fair-skinned girl with a regular feature. She wore a purple upper shirt with broad sleeves and a white pleated dress. Her hair was scraped on top into a fairy bun. She raised her head and gazed at Wei Changying with contempt.

Wei Changying was eager to trouble people of Zhiben Hall. She asked at once, “What is your name?”

The girl frowned at Wei Changying’s arrogance, but politely answered, “I am Lingzi.”

Knowing that the girl was not Wei Lingyue, Wei Changying quickly looked at another silent and demure girl in yellow beside Wei Lingzi. Wei Changying guessed that she must be Wei Lingyue. There were two dignified girls among the women of Zhiben Hall. The one speaking out was Wei Lingzi, and the other one must be Wei Lingyue.

Wei Changying said, “It seems that you are also a grandchild. Your elder generation does not say something yet. You interrupted. Is it your manner of the Wei Family?”

Wei Lingzi irritated and said, “You have just..”

“Just now your grandmother referred to me and praised me. Couldn’t I reply her in a humble way?” Wei Changying said firmly, “Do two madams and my mother come up with you? If not, why do you speak out?”

Wei Lingzi was angry, blushing, and said, “Does my grandmother really glorify you? Her aim is to...”

Wei Changying interrupted her and surprisingly said, “En? That is to say, did I get it wrong? Did your grandmother not praise me? In other words, she laughed at me. It is not surprising that my grandmother has looked down upon her. If I did something wrong, my grandmother and my mother are here and they would teach me. Your grandmother is not supposed to discuss me. What is more, if she laughed at me in front of my grandmother, she would meddle in my domestic things. If my grandmother did not scold at her, would it be not reasonable?”

“...”

Song Lingzi was on the brink of tears. Song Mianhe waved her hand to let Song Lingzi step backward. She glimpsed at Wei Changying and said to Old Madam Song, “Congratulations to you, my sister. Your lineal granddaughter has the silver tongue. Although it is said that her reputation has been spotted, according to her fierce character, she would not get hurt in the Shen Family after marriage.”

Old Madam Song did not say something. Wei Changying was attacked in word over and over again. Madam Song could not bear it. She quickly stood up and coldly said, “Song Mianhe, whose reputation is harmful? Don’t you remember that your birth mother, Mrs. Lan, was a domestic prostitute in a business family in Jiangnan? Because she looked like my dead cousin aunt, cousin uncle brought your mother to the Song Family in the memory of his wife. Mrs. Lan was merely a replacement. As her daughter, you married to Wei Qi after my lineal aunt passed away. After decades, do you think that you are elegant? Do you think that no one in the Wei Family knows your background?”

Song Mianhe was sophisticated and could bear anything. However, Madam Song’s words were the sharpest attack on her. Madam Song not only called the name of Song Mianhe, but also spoke out her birth mother’s background. When hearing the word, a domestic prostitute, Song Mianhe suddenly became pale. When Madam Song finished her words, Song Mianhe violently shivered.

A few seconds later, Song Mianhe supported the armchair with her hand, her body slightly shaking. Suddenly, she fell off on side, unconscious.

The women of Zhiben Hall came around Song Mianhe and shouted for help. One of them pinched her philtrum. Old Madam Song casually took a sip of tea and said to her granddaughter, “It is not a surprise that Song Mianhe is Wei Qi’s wife. They always pretend to faint when they fail to retort.”

Wei Changying chuckled and said, “It is merely what they can do.”

After a while, Madam Song pretended to make an apology and to persuade people of Zhiben Hall to stay, but they were determined to take Song Mianhe back home. After Madam Song sent them off a few steps, she winked at Mrs. He. She got it. No Sooner had people of Zhiben Hall left round "moon-gate" than Mrs. He stood on the court, with hands on her lips, took a deep breath and shouted loudly, “Shit. Can’t you walk without the support of others? Why did you come out? In this morning, you came to our house to look for troubles. It is a luck that you are alive to go out. Otherwise, our house would be polluted by you, such a poor buffer.”

Mrs. He went on, “You are not good enough to foster a nice grandchild. On the contrary, you envy others’. Do you have the luck to have such a lovely grandchild? Look at yourself, you are not able to struggle with us yet.”

In the inner hall, Wei Changying was a little worried. She asked her grandmother, “Granny is shouting there. What would it be like if people all knew it? Old Madam of Zhiben Hall is a member of the Wei Family, after all. Would people laugh at us?”

Old Madam Song did not care about it. She answered, “It is well known that I am not in harmony with the daughter of a prostitute. I used to struggle with her in the feast. It is none of my business whether she is alive or dead when she goes out of my house. People do not think that she and I can talk in a peaceful way. Therefore, I always bully her.”

Wei Changying recalled the scene where she climbed the wall. She tentatively asked, “Did you win in the battle?”

“Of course.” said Old Madam Song. Referring to this, she touched her bun with an air of elation and continued, “After punching her, I felt pretty comfortable. So your grandfather also hates her... Er.”

Chen Ruping pulled Old Madam Song’s sleeves to remind her. At this time she realized that she had been a slip of the tongue. She immediately said another thing to Wei Changying to cover up her lapse, “The bead flower on your hair is rather beautiful.”

Wei Changying bit her lip to avoid laughing. After Old Madam Song fought with Song Mianhe, she felt comfortable. Then... she hit grandfather in the quarrel. No wander grandfather hated Song Mianhe.
