Chapter 165 Ge Shun

Although Wei Changying was just assisting because Madam Su and Mrs. Liu were mainly in charge, she didn't know how complicated and severe it was about making an engagement until she really participated in it. Following her mother-in-law and sister-in-law, Wei Changying finally managed all the things after being busy from dawn to dusk for more than ten days.

After a good rest, Wei Changying noticed that the Third Miss Shen Lianmei had never shown up, so she felt strange about it. This day, only Mrs. Liu was with her, so Wei Changying asked Mrs. Liu about Shen Lianmei. Mrs. Liu said in a low voice, "You didn't know. The third sister's mother passed away last year."

Shen Lianmei was in mourning. No wonder she didn't show up from the time when Wei Changying came to offer tea and the engagement of Shen Canghui's marriage.

Wei Changying understood and said, "No wonder I haven't seen my third sister since I came here."

Mrs. Liu said naturally, "You will see her someday since you are in our family."

...The day before yesterday, the Liu Family had just received the imperial edict, which asked Liu Ruoyu to marry into the Eastern Palace at the end of this year. Because of this, Mrs. Liu, who had treated her cousin Liu Ruoyu as her daughter, felt upset these days. She even didn't feel like joking in front of Madam Su, and that was why she responded coldly to Wei Changying. However, Wei Changying didn't care. She didn't continue the topic but kept writing the name list, with Qin'ge making ink beside her.

Wei Changying had just written several characters when Zhu Lan ran in. She made a curtsey and said, "There's an old servant who gave us an invitation. He said that the eldest aunt had just arrived in the capital a few days ago and that he was required to tell you about this as soon as their new home was well arranged."

Wei Changying exclaimed, and then she said to Mrs. Liu, "It's my maternal aunt. I remember that she held me in her arms when I was a baby. These years I always heard that she was accompanying my eldest uncle working in other places. Some days before, when I visited my cousin, she told me that my eldest uncle was back in the capital. But at that time, I didn't know where they are living. I guessed that they must have been busy since their arrival, and they would inform me once they were settled. So now their servant is here!"

Although Mrs. Liu was not interested in this, she still covered up her moods perfectly. She showed her concern as she said, "Well, well! I suggest you visit them personally. I suppose your eldest aunt missed you a lot since you have been separated for years."

"I'll meet the servant who gave us the invitation and ask him about their current situation," Wei Changying stood up as she said, "I'm afraid that you still have to help me take care of the affairs in the Shen Family. I dare not disturb mother since she is checking the payments...."

Mrs. Liu nodded and said, "How could you not see your aunt since she has sent a servant to inform you? I'll take care of the things here, and I'll tell mother where you are going after she comes back. You can go without worry."

Wei Changying thanked her and took Qin'ge, Zhu Lan, and other servants back to the Grand Preceptor's mansion. On their way, Wei Changying asked Zhu Lan where the servant was, and Zhu Lan replied, "The second young madam took him to the Jintong Courtyard after knowing who he is. Granny Wan let Shen Ju accompany him in the side chamber and serve him tea."

She then said, "Granny He knew him. I remember that his last name was Ge."

Wei Changying looked at Mrs. Huang and asked, "Is he my eldest aunt's dowry?"

Mrs. Huang thought for a while and replied, "When your eldest aunt got married, there was a manager whose last name was Ge in her dowry."

After they arrived at the Jintong Courtyard, Wei Changying changed her dress into another one, which was suitable to meet guests. She then pressed her headwear tighter and let others make sure that she looked perfect. She then asked a servant to bring her the old servant who was in the front courtyard.

A few moments later, the old servant arrived. He was led in by Mrs. He. The servant was more than 50 years old. His hair was grey, and he had a small figure, but he looked honest and kind. He greeted Wei Changying humbly and told her that his name was Ge Shun. Just as Mrs. Huang had said, he was Wei Shengxian's dowry, and now he had become Wei Shengxian's head manager.

Wei Changying provided him a seat politely and asked about Wei Shengxian's situation.

Ge Shun said politely, "Everything's fine, as well as the two ladies. Madam hasn't seen the Wei Family for a long time. She has now settled down in the capital and missed you very much since she has heard that you have got married for more than a month. A few days ago, we were arranging the new house, so she didn't invite you over because she worried that we were too busy to take care of you. Now that we have settled down, the Madam hopes that you can come to our mansion and chat with her."

Wei Changying sighed and said, "I understand. Actually, I visited my cousin Song a few days ago, and I have decided to visit you after I heard from her that my eldest uncle had come back to the capital. However, cousin Song didn't know where my eldest aunt lives. I guessed that my aunt was too busy, or else she would have sent someone to inform me. Now you've come, but I am busy these days, for my fourth brother-in-law is going to marry the daughter of the Pei Family on June 8 in the lunar calendar. It's already June 2 today, so I'm afraid I have no time to visit my eldest aunt."

Ge Shun immediately said, "Since you have got married, it's reasonable to put your husband's family in the first place. Before I come here, the Madam told me not to mess up Shen Family's schedule. She hopes that you can visit her when you have time."

"I will have time to visit my eldest aunt and my two cousins after my fourth brother-in-law got married," Wei Changying nodded and promised. She then asked Ge Shun about Wei Shengxian's health condition, and what her two cousins like as presents.

Ge Shun answered the questions one by one. Wei Changying knew that Wei Shengxian had nothing to worry except for being forced by her husband's family to adopt a son because she had no sons. Wei Shengxian's husband, Song Kui, was an honest man. Although he had two concubines in the early years because he needed to have an heir, he had given the concubines to others before he had returned to the capital. He doted on his daughters Song Xiyue and Song Ruxuan very much.

Wei Changying's two cousins, Song Xiyue and Song Ruxuan, were 16 and 14 years old respectively. Both of them were quiet and virtuous, and they were good at knitting and sewing. Ge Shun was a servant, so he would only say good words. Wei Changying thought she could not truly know how Wei Shengxian and her two daughters were unless she visited them personally.

However, Shen Canghui's wedding was at the corner, so Wei Changying couldn't ask Madam Su, who was terribly busy, for permission to visit her aunt. Therefore, Wei Changying promised that she would visit Wei Shengxian after the daughter of the Pei Family married to Shen Canghui.

Ge Shun had brought presents, so Wei Changying returned twice as much as what she received. She then let Mrs. Huang select two pieces of jewelry with the same design, which were for her two cousins. Wei Changying ordered Shen Ju accompany Ge Shun back to Wei Shengxian's mansion so that Shen Ju could know the way there.

Noon had passed before they finally finished arranging these things.

The servants in the kitchen served Wei Changying's meal. She quickly put some food into her mouth and was about to go to Count Xiangning's mansion when she saw Shen Cangfeng came back from work, wearing the Private Guard's uniform, with a knife hanging on his waist. He came in with Shen Shuyan in his arms.

Seeing that Wei Changying was here, Shen Cangfeng was a little surprised. He smiled and said, "It seems that you are free today."

"My eldest aunt has just sent a servant here, so I asked my eldest sister-in-law to help me with the affairs, and I came back to meet the servant. The guest has just left," Wei Changying stood up as she said. Meanwhile, Shen Shuyan struggled in Shen Cangfeng's arms, hoping to stand on the ground. After Shen Cangfeng had put her down, Shen Shuyan made a curtsey to Wei Changying. Her big black eyes were like two crescent moons when she smiled, which was incredibly adorable. She then greeted Wei Changying in a sweet voice.

Wei Changying bent down and rubbed Shen Shuyan's head. She smiled and asked, "Shuyan, do you come here to have some fruit?" She then ordered a servant to bring her some fruit.

Qin'ge was about to go when Shen Shuyan shook her head and said sweetly, "I come here to visit Cui Di'er and Cui Lv'er."

"Cui Di'er and Cui Lv'er?" Wei Changying thought for a while and realized that they were the two parrots that she received from Song Zaishui. She then joked with Shen Shuyan as she said, "You come for Cui Di'er and Cui Lv'er instead of coming for me? Do you dislike me?"

Shen Shuyan immediately replied, "I like you, third aunt."

"Then why are you here for the parrots but not me?" Wei Changying said with a smile. Wei Changying took a slice of fruit and fed Shen Shuyan after Qin'ge brought the fruit to them.

Shen Shuyan blinked her big eyes and giggled as she said, "Because you are busy, and my mother doesn't allow me to bother you. I dare not come in until third uncle took me in."

Hearing this, Wei Changying felt pity for her. However, Mrs. Duanmu was Shen Shuyan's natural mother, so it would be improper for Wei Changying to blame Mrs. Duanmu for being too strict. Therefore, Wei Changying smiled and said, "You won't bother me. From now on, you can come in whenever you want. Zhu Lan and Zhu Shi can take you to see the parrots, and there are also some goldfish in the pond.... However, if there's no one here, you can't come in alone because you might get hurt."

"I want to see the parrots," Shen Shuyan ate the fruit and said, "I don't like goldfish."

"Ok. I'll ask Zhu Shi to come here and take you to see the parrots," Wei Changying said and touched Shen Shuyan's little face. She smiled and ordered a servant to call Zhu Shi, and let Zhu Shi take Shen Shuyan to play with Cui Di'er and Cui Lv'er. She then told Zhu Shi to be careful not to let the parrots hurt Shen Shuyan.

After Shen Shuyan went out, Wei Changying asked Shen Cangfeng, "Why do you come back so early today?"

Shen Cangfeng smiled and said, "I thought you forgot about me since you are busy talking with Shuyan."

Hearing this, the maidservants all covered their mouths and giggled. Wei Changying blushed and said, "You are too old to envy your niece. How shameless!" She then asked, "Is there any important thing for you to come back?"

"Nothing," Shen Cangfeng smiled and said, "Our officer knew that Canghui was going to get married, and we are not busy these days, so he let us back to help you."

Wei Changying replied, "Everything is almost settled."

"There will be something for me to do anyway," Shen Cangfeng smiled as he said. He then said that he would accompany Wei Changying to Count Xiangning's mansion.

After confirming that Shen Cangfeng had already had a meal in the palace, Wei Changying was about to nod when she suddenly realized that Shen Shuyan was still here. She said, "If we both go out, is it alright to let our servants accompany Shuyan?"

"There are lots of people here. Although we have a pond, it's not deep. The water just reaches Shuyan's jaw even if she gets into it," said Shen Cangfeng, "Just let the servants take care of her."

When they went outside, they saw Shen Shuyan standing on the Beauty Bench, waving a rose which she had just picked. The parrots on the rack were trying to peck the rose, but Shen Shuyan put the rose away when they were about to reach it. These parrots could talk fluently. Besides greeting people, they could scold people if they were angry. Now the parrots were scolding Shen Shuyan, saying, "Bad guy! Bad guy!"

Shen Shuyan was happy instead of being angry. She turned to Zhu Shi, who was holding her in case that she fell down, and said, "Sister Zhu Shi, listen! They can even scold me!"

"They are versatile," Zhu Shi said proudly, "They can even sing like a lark when they are happy...."

They didn't notice Shen Cangfeng was there until he coughed. Zhu Shi put Shen Shuyan onto the ground and said, "Young master, young madam!"

"We are going to Count Xiangning's mansion to help them, you take care of Shuyan, got it?" Shen Cangfeng ordered. He then rubbed Shen Shuyan's head and said, "Don't run around. Be a good girl. If you are tired, let them take you into the room and have a rest. If you feel hot staying outside, let them take the parrots into the room, and cool the room down with ice. But don't use too much ice, or else you might catch a cold...."

After exhorting over and over again, Shen Cangfeng eventually left with Wei Changying when he saw Shen Shuyan nodded obediently.

When they left the Shen Family's mansion, Wei Changying laughed, "I saw Shuyan was about to fall asleep when you are exhorting her. I can't imagine how you got so many things to exhort. If I were you, I wouldn't exhort her so comprehensively."

Shen Cangfeng smiled and said, "Someday, you'll exhort more than I did."

Wei Changying didn't understand, so she asked curiously, "Why?"

"Those are the words that my mother used to say to me every time I went to work," said Shen Cangfeng. He secretly glanced over at Wei Changying's belly and whispered, "At that time, I was about to fall asleep too, but my mother was never tired of repeating them, so I kept her words in mind."

Wei Changying felt embarrassed and hit him as she said, "Stop saying such nonsense!"
