Chapter 274 One Month Old

Wei Changying's second aunt, Wei Zhengyin, was ill and her second uncle's family was prevented from coming over as they were in mourning. Thanks to their absence, the two families didn't have to see each other or consequently be upset by each other. Among Wei Changying's relatives, distant relatives like Wei Yu and Queen Run had sent their trusted people over to present gifts. The people had taken a look at the newborn baby and had given their congratulations, showing the respect from their families. And now her relatives were just waiting for the banquet to celebrate the baby becoming one month old before they would come to give their congratulations in person.

But her eldest aunt, Wei Shengxian, came almost every other day.

Wei Shengxian came so frequently but she cared very little for Wei Changying. She came mostly for the son Wei Changying had given birth to. Since Wei Shengxian had no sons herself, she particularly loved the young masters of the Song Family, who were children of her husband's family. Since Wei Changying was her niece, her son was related to Wei Shengxian by blood. Thus, Wei Shengxian loved him even more and missed him so much whenever she couldn't see him so often.

As Madam Su and Wei Shengxian were the most enthusiastic among the elders who had visited the child, they became close quickly.

Regarding the engagement between Song Xiyue and Liu Xixun, neither Wei Zhengyin nor Wei Changying had succeeded in comforting Wei Shengxian. However, having understood her worries, Madam Su managed to ease her mind, "If we can see what's going on, don't you think Duke Weiyuan knows it just as well? The best they can do is to find a lineal daughter, who can be of great help, from the clan of a family among gentlefolks for their sixteenth young master. Nevertheless, only six families can be regarded as gentlefolks. They want a girl from the lineal branch of the clan, who is favored and capable and who can be a helper to the sixteenth young master of the Liu Family. So, if Duke Weiyuan had been able to do it himself, why would the Military Officer have taken care of it?"

Wei Shengxian then asked for clarification, "Madam Su, you mean...?"

"Look at our Shen Family. Cangning is very loved by her father, but she is too lively! I am her mother but she often gives me a headache! Duke Weiyuan will certainly not want to marry her to the young master. Otherwise, he would have sounded us out a few years ago. Now, look at your parents' family. Changying is excellent but she had been engaged to my Cangfeng ever since they were still babies. As for her other cousins, I’m not trying to show off my relatives by marriage, but her cousins neither have as much love as that which she has nor they are excellent compared to her though the girls are not bad. Don't you agree?" Madam Su was very pleased with her third daughter-in-law who had given her a grandson at the moment, so she kept complimenting her to her third daughter-in-law's aunt. Having complimented her a bit, Madam Su then carried on, "There is only one Miss in the Song Family. Everything about her is good but she is very unlucky! The Duanmu Family has a lot of girls, but as there are so many of them, some of them are not properly educated. There are weeds among the seedlings! I have a few nieces from my parents' family, but either they became engaged a long time ago or they have found a good match recently."

"So, if Duke Weiyuan had refused to accept your elder daughter whilst he couldn't find any other suitable girl, there would have been a feud between the Wei and Song families. Why do that? It would be better to just tie the knot! After all, the girls in your family are certainly proper. Anyway, if the Military Officer can make a decision on the marriage of his nephew, he will be able to do it again! If Duke Weiyuan rejects the proposals every time, people will wonder whether the sixteenth young master wants to get married!"

Madam Su said implicitly, "No matter what, you are the daughter of Family Head of the Wei Family. The Old Madam of your family is known to love her juniors. Do you think she will allow her girls to be bullied for nothing or even to be killed? Duke Weiyuan is not stupid. Even he knows that governor Song is not a child from the clan of the family, which was what he is not happy about, he will blame the Military Officer for that. It has nothing to do with your First Miss! Why would he want to vent his anger on, and breed enmity with, the innocent? In my view, as long as your First Miss behaves properly as a wife, the Liu Family will not make her life difficult. After all, you and governor Song are the children of gentlefolks, so your status is not much lower than the Liu Family's!"

These words suddenly made Wei Shengxian see the light. She became deeply grateful to Madam Su and laughed at her own overthinking which had made her so worried that she had fallen ill for a few days at the end of last year.

Madam Su said with understanding, "Two years ago, people from the northern Rong tribe attempted to assassinate Changying. I guess you were worried about your niece and dwelt on it a lot, didn't you? That is fine. A mother always needs to think more, and we are all the same. Since my Cangfeng was injured in the imperial martial arts competition when he wanted to save his partner, I was still worried about him though over half a year had passed. I then asked Changying to take him to see Miracle Doctor Ji but Miracle Doctor Ji couldn't find anything wrong with him. Thinking we fooled him, he became really angry. Cangfeng had said that I had made a mountain out of a molehill, but as his mother, I would rather do that than let them do things to leave regrets in their lives."

Wei Shengxian fully agreed with her, saying, "You are totally right! We are old and nothing can surprise us. We know this is how our lives are going to end. However, if there were something that could still worry us, it would be for our children!" Envying Madam Su, she then said, "Madam Su, you are much more fortunate than I am. You have so many sons but I don't have the luck and only have two daughters."

Madam Su tried to comfort her, "Although you are not lucky enough to have sons, you have wonderful daughters. Look at your two daughters, both of them are educated and have good manners! To be honest, my elder daughter is good, but my younger daughter... I really don't know what her future is going to be like!"

"You are too modest!" Wei Shengxian quickly said, "That is your daughter! She must have been properly educated! Even if you keep saying she is not good, no one will believe it."

Looking at the boy, the two elders talked about their children and occasionally chatted about the news in the capital, both looking joyful. As the days went by, the family was in harmony and then it was the day of the boy's becoming one month old.

Having gotten up early to take a nice bath with her maidservants waiting by her side, Wei Changying felt refreshed.

Having changed into fancy clothes that had been quickly finished, she looked at herself in the mirror, thinking she was plumper than before she had been pregnant. She couldn't wear the clothes she had used to wear so this set of clothes had been made especially for the banquet. As the measurement had been taken while she had still been resting in bed when she couldn't get up, her maidservants had purposely made it a bit larger in case it wouldn't fit. Owing to that, it wasn't tight. Being slim was the fashion at the moment, so remembering her slim shape which everyone had envied, she felt sad.

Seeing her baby whom Mrs. Huang had brought to her, she saw that her little sleeping baby, in his red clothing with lucky Ruyi Jade and cloud patterns, had grown. Wei Changying's heart instantly melted and all her sadness went away.

"Why is he sleeping now?" Although she said that, worrying that she would wake her son up, Wei Changying carefully took him in her arms, asking in a low voice, "We will show him at the banquet later. Is he going to sleep all the time?"

Mrs. Huang smiled, saying, "There is still time before the banquet. It is good that the tiny young master is sleeping now! When he is refreshed from his nap, it will also be the time when we take him out to the banquet."

Wei Changying spoke to her worriedly, "Granny, follow him out and be sure to keep an eye on him. Don't allow anyone clumsy to hold him in case they drop him."

"Young madam, please rest assured. Our Madam will be the one who holds him later, though, in the beginning, the Family Head will take him out himself. Now both of them grinned from ear to ear. No matter what happens, they will keep the tiny young master safe, not allowing people to hurt him. This is a lineal grandson of the Shen Family, so not every guest can hold him! Anyone who doesn't have high status won't be able to even get close enough to look at him." Mrs. Huang said with a smile, "Look at the silver jade plant that was carried in from outside. I heard that the Family Head personally ordered someone to take it out of the treasury!"

Having heard that her father-in-law had personally ordered servants to bring things here, she handed her baby to Mrs. Huang and went out of the room. When she was in the hall, she saw the hall was filled with the sparkle and glitter of jewels and pearls. It was all from the silver jade plant. As her parents' family had a similar status as her husband's, it only took her one glance to recognize the things on the plant. The plant's branches were made of coral, leaves were jade, and flowers were various colored pearls and jewels. It was resplendent and magnificent, shining in the hall.

Wei Changying didn't want gold or jade. What she liked was the metaphorical meaning of the silver jade plant given by her father-in-law. Since the story that the famous saying of "The reasoning is the same as that people prefer to have orchids and silver jade plants in their gardens", silver jade plants and orchids were used to describe people with promising futures. Therefore, Shen Xuan had sent this silver jade plant, suggesting his hopes for his grandson becoming a useful person.

After being happy about it, Wei Changying became cautious, asking Mrs. Huang, "Granny, have you heard of anything? Did Father ever give such a silver jade plant to Shuming when he was one month old?"

Mrs. Huang smiled, saying, "Young madam, you are more and more considerate now." Having praised her, she continued, "Young madam, don't worry. Although the Family Head has more hopes for our branch, the eldest branch is the most senior branch. The Family Head places great importance on harmony between his children, so he didn't only give us the plant! When the first grandson master was one month old, the Family Head had given him a similar plant. I asked our Madam's maidservant, Man Lou, the one our tiny young master had got is shorter than the first grandson master's!"

It being shorter didn't bother her. Wei Changying pursed her lips, smiling and saying, "If Shuming had one too, I'm relieved. There is no need to show off on these aspects."

Mrs. Huang agreed with a smile, saying, "It's almost time, young madam. Shouldn't you take the tiny young master to the sedan chair and go to the main room first?"

When their eldest grandson was almost ten years old, their second grandson arrived, so people at the Grand Preceptor's naturally wanted to celebrate lots. Thus, the Jintong Courtyard would definitely not be big enough. Wei Changying's status was not high enough to welcome all the guests either. Therefore, the banquet was hosted by Shen Xuan and Madam Su, and was naturally set up in the front courtyard and main room respectively.

Dressed in festive clothes, Madam Su had been sitting in the hall, looking forward to her grandson's arrival. Even though the grandchildren from the eldest branch and the second branch, such as Shen Shujing and Shen Shuming, surrounded her, chattering, Madam Su was obviously hoping to see her newborn grandson more. As Wei Changying just entered the door with her son in her arms, she was quickly greeted by Madam Su, "Don't be so formal. Your son is just one month old. Come and sit down!" She touched Shen Shuming's hand, admonishing them gently, "Your cousin is sleeping now. You all should be quiet and don't disturb him!"

Wei Changying handed her baby to Mrs. Huang in order to hand him over to Madam Su to hold, and she still curtsied to Madam Su. She then smiled and told her nieces and nephews, who were led by Shen Shujing to curtsy to her, to get up. Finally, she sat down on the right of Duanmu Yanyu, pursed her lips, smiling and saying, "I'm late. I have kept Mother and my sisters-in-law waiting here. I'm sorry."

"Don't say that." Having heard her, Duanmu Yanyu turned her head, smiling and speaking to her, "We and Mother are hoping to see your baby so we came over early to be here. Your son is only one month old, and you had to clean up yourself and look after him. It's actually very soon for you to come here."

Since her second sister-in-law, who had always been at odds with her, had said these words, Wei Changying looked at her in surprise before saying with respect, "Yanyu, thank you for your understanding. I was thinking that I should thank you after my rest. Thank you for your help on the day I gave birth! You personally went to your parents' place in the middle of the night to ask the Eighth Miss to come! I don't know how to repay you for this kindness! I hadn't thanked you but you have already comforted me again!"

On hearing that, Duanmu Yanyu was content, but she said, "Changying, you are being too polite. Since we are sisters-in-law, we are family. There is no need to repay anything. I don't want you saying these things."

The two of them were being polite. Suddenly, Shen Shuming yelled out in excitement, "He is awake! My cousin is awake!"

Since Madam Su had asked everyone to be quiet and not to disturb her grandson who was just one month old, everyone in the hall had spoken in a low voice. So, his yell was very loud. Mrs. Liu immediately scolded him, "Be quiet!"

Wei Changying was also startled. Worrying about her son, she unconsciously stood up, but she saw Shen Shuming lying in front of his grandmother, staring at his cousin in swaddling clothes. He ignored his mother's scold, speaking to his grandmother happily, " My cousin's eyes look like my father."

"He looks like your third uncle." Madam Su corrected him with a smile. Actually, Shen Cangli and Shen Cangfeng resembled Shen Xuan. Since her tiny grandson looked like one of them, he would naturally look like the other two. However, as he was Shen Cangfeng's child, people would certainly compare him with Shen Cangfeng.

Shen Shuming then said, "He looks like our grandfather as well." He added, "So do his eyebrows."

He was lying on one side and looking at him, while on the other side there was the Second Granddaughter Miss Shen Shurou. The Third Granddaughter Miss Shen Shuyue was standing opposite Madam Su, holding her grandmother's knee and curiously looking on. Thus, the three grandchildren together with Madam Su surrounded the baby. There was no room for the First Granddaughter Miss Shen Shujing and the Fourth Granddaughter Miss Shen Shuyan.

Shen Shujing was already eleven. With her mother's education, she was cultured and had good manners. She was just like the eldest sister, never fighting for things with her siblings or cousins. Now that everyone wanted to see the tiny cousin, being understanding, she had to give way to the others. However, the youngest and shortest, Shen Shuyan, refused to do the same thing. At first, knowing she was the youngest and shortest, she tried hard to squeeze in to see. But her elder cousins wanted to see the newborn cousin, refusing to spare room for her. Her lineal cousin, Shen Shurou, had even scolded her, "You are the youngest. You should wait till the end!"

The little girl waited for a long time with her head tilted up but she didn't see her turn. She pursed her lips, about to cry. Thankfully, Shen Shujing, who usually helped the elders to look after her cousins, knew her cousins' temperaments well. Having seen that, she quickly went to her and held her up, saying, "Shuyan, you also want to see your cousin, don't you? Shuming, you move aside. Let Shuyan look at the baby. Actually, now Shuyan has a younger cousin! Come, let's look at him together. Isn't your young cousin cute?"

Shen Shujing had wanted to comfort her cousin to turn tears into smiles so she had just randomly said that. However, on hearing that, Mrs. Liu frowned secretly. She secretly glanced at Duanmu Yanyu. She did see Duanmu Yanyu become upset and look at her niece coldly. Obviously, Shen Shujing's words "Shuyan has a younger cousin now" sounded like mocking that there were no sons in the second branch to Duanmu Yanyu's ears.
