Chapter 279 A Simple Reason

After arriving at the capital, as they hadn't finished their antidote treatment, both Su Yuwu and Pei Kai stayed at the Ji Family so that Ji Qubing could treat them easily there.

Ji Qubing's erratic temperament was notorious. Despite what had happened on the road, he started again though they had just gotten back to the capital. He completely ignored that the humble doctor from the Liu Family almost begged him to be an assistant. Neither did he accept Wei Zhengyin and or Pei Family's request that they would like to offer some meticulous maidservants to serve amongst the Ji Family. He only allowed people to carry his two patients in through the door and then slammed the door, shutting everybody including Wei Zhengyin outside.

Everyone looked at one another with dismay, worrying that they might agitate him so much that he would stop the treatment. As it was an extremely awkward situation, the door opened again. A small head poked out. Ni Weiyi, a maid there, looked around, lifted the hem of her dress, and trotted towards Wei Zhengyin. She greeted her and then whispered, "Miracle Doctor Ji says he needs to make the medicine immediately. No one should disturb him, so he asks you to go back home first, Second Madam."

She then said in an even lower voice, "The second uncle and the second aunt said that since the young master is here, they will take good care of him. You should rest assured."

Although Wei Zhengyin was still worried that they might not be careful enough while looking after her son because the Ni Tao couple also needed to serve Ji Qubing and take care of Ni Weiyi, their niece, in this huge mansion, she knew she must stop insisting.

Anyway, Wei Zhengyin was a woman from the Wei Family, and the relationship between Ji Qubing and the Wei Family was known to the public. Although Wei Zhengyin was worried, she knew the Ni Tao couple would try their best as they were her old family's servants. The Pei Family was anxious. They could have never asked Ji Qubing to treat Pei Kai. But since Pei Kai and Su Yuwu had been poisoned at the same time and Wei Zhengyin had asked Ji Qubing to treat Su Yuwu, he had treated Pei Kai as well.

As Pei Kai was an additional patient, he had just been carried into the courtyard. It was said that including the maid who had come out to deliver the message, there were only three people who served in the Ji Family. Probably, Ji Qubing had to do things by himself. When there were two seriously injured people in the Ji Family, how could they manage to take good care of each one?

However, Wei Zhengyin said nothing and they didn't dare carry on disturbing them. The Madam of the Pei Family gestured with her eyes. Then a maid went to stop Ni Weiyi and gave her paper money, telling her to say something nice about Pei Kai to her uncle and aunt to help Pei Kai.

Having done that, the Madam of the Pei Family was still worried. Having considered all her relatives, she thought of her niece Pei Meiniang. Although Pei Meiniang had fought with her husband's family, she was still the fourth young madam of the Shen Family. She was still the sister-in-law of the third young madam of the Shen Family. The Madam then prepared a generous gift and sent someone to ask Pei Meiniang to introduce them to her, so they could politely suggest that they hoped they could increase the number of servants working in the Ji Family so that her son would be well taken care of.

At that moment, Wei Changying had just taken leave of Wei Zhengyin. The aunt and the niece had held each other and cried a lot. They were glad that Su Yuwu had made his narrow escape from death. It was also that Wei Zhengyin had apologized for taking away Ji Qubing when her niece had been about to give birth and Wei Changying had said that she didn't blame her for doing so. They talked it through, so there were no hard feelings between them. After all, they were close relatives.

As the aunt and the niece had spoken so much about those things, Wei Zhengyin had completely forgotten to mention that the Ji Family was understaffed. Having heard of this issue now, Wei Changying was a little surprised, asking Mrs. Huang, "There are so few people at Miracle Doctor Ji's place, but I heard that Yuwu and the young master of the Pei Family still can't get up. So how can the three of them, Ni Tao, Mrs. Liiu, and Weiyi, look after everyone there?"

Mrs. Huang said, "Guard Jiang is also there now." Jiang Zheng had been almost recovered by the end of last year. But Wei Changying had been worried that he would get blamed again, so she had told him not to go back to the Anshun Inn but to stay at the Ji Family. The excuse was that there was no one guarding Ji Qubing's mansion, so he could do the guard's job there. But in fact, as Ji Qubing was always around dying people and nobody would want to mess with that sort of thing, Jiang Zheng could avoid being caught up in trouble.

Zhu Lei had been there, looking after his master. Having misjudged the relationship between his master and Mrs. He, Zhu Lei had been afraid that he would be beaten by his master and Mrs. He since they had found out he had been the one behind everything. When his master had recovered, Mrs. He had delivered some food to Jiang Zheng on Wei Changying's order. While Jiang Zheng had been pleased, Zhu Lei had flattered him so much that he had received a lot of pocket money. Therefore, Zhu Lei had been able to pack his bags earlier, leave a letter saying where he would go, and run away at night.

The disciple was seemingly loyal but actually cunning, but Jiang Zheng, a real honest man, was living a secluded life amongst the Ji Family as their guard. He was so quiet that even Wei Changying had forgotten that he, her instructor, could also be someone who could help.

But, "Even if Uncle Jiang helps, there won't be enough people, will there?"

The Madam of the Pei Family quickly said, "But Miracle Doctor Ji likes it to be quiet. Our family is not close to the Miracle Doctor Ji, so I don't dare to say much. Please help us speak to the doctor. Although our family is not of high rank, I can still find a few well-behaved servants."

Wei Changying found it strange. When Jiang Zheng had been injured, she had ordered people to break into the mansion of the Ji Family. Although Ji Qubing had refused to treat him at first, he hadn't minded that Zhu Lei had stayed to look after his master after he had agreed to treat him. Why had he refused to allow the Su and Pei Families to send people in to serve their young masters?

She couldn't help but look at Mrs. Huang, but Mrs. Huang put on an awkward smile, whispering, "Last time when we asked Miracle Doctor Ji to treat guard Jiang, our family gave the Miracle Doctor a total of eight hundred taels of silver."

"..." Wei Changying was silent for a moment. The mistress and her servant unconsciously looked at the Madam of the Pei Family. The Madam of the Pei Family had her ears pricked in case she missed anything that could help her son, but now she wished that she had been deaf! Being looked at by Wei Changying and Mrs. Huang, she was so embarrassed that her face turned red, wishing the earth would open up and swallow her. She stammered, "This... On the way back, as... as my son and the fifth young master of the Su Family were both seriously injured, we... We... We were concerned about our children. So I... I forgot about this!"

On the thirteenth of March, they had requested Ji Qubing to leave the capital and set off to save them, and now it was almost late April!

But now, this doctor, who was both known throughout the country as having a bad temper and good medical knowledge, had traveled far, had personally treated the two young masters, and had given several antidotes for free. However, the patients' families hadn't said anything about the fee, yet they even wanted to send a group of people into the Ji Family to stay for free while looking after the patients! If an ordinary doctor encountered this, he would become angry. With Ji Qubing's temperament, it was really a kindness that he had had people carry them into his mansion.

The Madam of the Pei Family hadn't expected the whole thing to be less complicated than her original thought. If she had given the paper money that she had given to Ni Weiyi to pass onto the Ni Tao couple to Ji Qubing, the problem would have been solved. However, she hadn't given the doctor anything but was generous to his servants! She was so embarrassed that she wished there would be a hole in the ground to sink into!

Fortunately, Pei Meiniang had accompanied her here, so she tried to ease the situation for her aunt. She explained to Wei Changying that the Madam of the Pei Family had only one biological son, Pei Kai, and no daughter. When she had heard that her son's life had been in danger, her whole attention had been on him, so she had forgotten all about the fee. She didn't deliberately forget to pay the medical fees. As a reputable family, the Pei Family would never owe anyone money!

Pei Meiniang then comforted the Madam of the Pei Family, scolding her servants, "My aunt is so worried about Pei Kai that she forgot to mention the fee to Miracle Doctor Ji. Why didn't you remind her? You are so dumb!"

They then tried to make their conversation less awkward. After the Madam of the Pei Family returned home, she immediately selected a few careful and smart servants. She told her head servant to take a thousand taels of silver from their account. She knew it was obviously expensive, but she had given Ni Weiyi two hundred in paper money! Additionally, in the Jintong Courtyard, she had heard Mrs. Huang say that when they had asked Ji Qubing to treat Wei Changying's guard, they had paid eight hundred taels of silver in total!

She also told her head servant, "This is only the first payment. If it is not enough, we will pay more immediately. When Pei Kai is recovered, our family will give him another generous gift! Explain clearly to the Miracle Doctor or his servants that our family has no intention of offending him. We were so worried about Pei Kai that we forgot about the fee."

Having heard that after the Madam of the Pei Family had delivered paper money to the Ji Family, her servants could get in to serve Pei Kai, Wei Zhengyin didn't know whether to be angry or laugh. Shaking her head, she spoke to Granny Qu, "Hasn't Ji Qubing always profited from our family? He is not a person who lacks money but he is still so stingy."

Granny Qu also felt that Ji Qubing was ungrateful as he treated Wei Zhengyin the same way as the Madam of the Pei Family. However, if they said he was completely ungrateful, it wouldn't be right because if it had been the Madam of the Pei Family who asked him to help, he wouldn't have gone with her. Granny Qu tried to comfort her, "Madam, you are not short of that much silver. Since Ji Qubing isn't allowed to look for his relatives in Western Liang, he has been upset about it. He doesn't dare to mess up important matters, but on the small things, he would cause trouble. Madam, you shouldn't be bothered with him."

Wei Zhengyin didn't dare to make a fuss about it since Su Yuwu was still lying on the bed, unable to move!

In the end, their conversations got out. Every family in the capital laughed about it, being amazed that there were any people who dared to owe such a bad-tempered doctor money. Especially when the patients had not recovered, they didn’t say a single word about the fee.

The third of May was Su Yufei's birthday, and the Su Family gave a banquet for her to celebrate.

The Shen and Su Families had always been close, so the juniors of the Grand Preceptor's family also went to join in the fun. Pei Meiniang had dismissed their rift after she had held onto Madam Su on the day of Wei Changying's labor. At least, it seemed that way, so she visited the Grand Preceptor's family more often. As she was polite and respectful, the other party couldn't really refuse her.

Having heard that it was Madam Su's niece's birthday, Pei Meiniang sent a gift as well. The Su Family learned about it, so they also had to invite her to the banquet. Therefore, the three sisters-in-law went together with Shen Cangning. Wei Changying was still mourning for her aunt, Mrs. Duanmu, who had passed away in the first month of the year, so she wouldn't finish mourning until the ninth month. During this period, she couldn't visit others, so she only sent gifts.

In the evening, everyone came back and went to Madam Su to be advised on their manners and give their reports. Madam Su was told the good news, "At the banquet, Meiniang suddenly didn't feel well. The second aunt quickly sent someone to find a doctor to check her. The doctor checked her pulse and said Meiniang is pregnant!"

It had been said by Mrs. Liu. She looked all smiles but she was unhappy, thinking that this Mrs. Pei was really lucky. When she had been newly married into the family, she had made a big fuss. However, in the end, the Song Family dismissed Duanmu Wuse, but Pei Meiniang stayed and now she was pregnant. If she gave birth to a grandson, she would secure her position in the family!

Madam Su had some bad feelings about her niece-in-law. But being grateful for Shen Zhou's support over the years and his willingness to step down, she was genuinely happy for Count Xiangning's family, asking with joy, "Really?"

"Mother, the way you asked this question is the same as Meiniang when she found out the news. Meiniang couldn't believe it at the beginning, either!" Duanmu Yanyu smiled, saying, "But the doctor said that Meiniang is more than a month into her pregnancy, so it can't be wrong."

Madam Su was happy but angry. While she was telling Pei Meiniang to sit down quickly so that she wouldn't get tired, she was asking worriedly, "It has been more than a month, so how is your period? Hope you are not as dumb as your third sister-in-law!"

Wei Changying could not help but blush with embarrassment.

Pei Meiniang said timidly, "My aunt, my period... It has never been punctual. I thought it was just really late this time!"

"You children, every one of you is so dumb! You don't even pay attention to such an important matter! Thankfully, everything is good. As Shuguang has safely come into this world, I'm not going to criticize Changying. Meiniang, you are so silly. You attended the banquet today. If you got tired, it would be a little troublesome!" Madam Su reprimanded her with mixed feelings and gave Pei Meiniang some advice. She told someone to bring a soft sedan chair to carefully take the eldest daughter-in-law of Count Xiangning back to the room.
