With the procession arriving at the city gate, Wei Changying and Gu Rouzhang had changed back their female clothing and sat in the carriage calmly and peacefully after checking their appearance for each other, waiting quietly.
After a while, they heard the voices of Shen Die and Gu Xinian's and Deng Zongqi's confidants behind the window of the carriage as they paid respect to them. Shen Cangfeng laid on the bed for his wound. Gu Xinian and Gu Yiran were stationed at their respective place. Only Deng Zongqi asked for leave to welcome his sister who came so far to visit him.
They talked for a while with the curtain closed and heard the conversation between Shen Canghui and Deng Zongqi. And then Shen Canghui rode a horse to tell his sister-in-law by the carriage, "Young master Song said the accommodation had been prepared in our ancestral house and we could go now."
Wei Changying responded, "Thank you. Let's go."
The ancestral house of the Shen Family was vast enough and even outweighed the coverage of Ruiyu Hall.
With the carriages entering the inner courtyard, Wei Changying got off the carriage first, looked up, and saw rows of houses that were covered with snow, like mountains without edge.
This was where Mingpei Hall was located, whose venue was less exquisite than Ruiyu Hall, but ancient and solemn.
Along the passage to the back hall, it was obvious that many places were maintained carefully, but many trails were difficult to recover, such as several apparent trails of knife and sword.
Sons of the Shen Family were unlikely to damage their ancestral house with knife and sword. In the past one hundred years, the ancestral house of the Shen Family in Western Liang must have experienced occupation by others and battles as the Liu Family in Eastern Hu.
The sky was grey and large flakes of snow were dropping directly. It was so cold even without wind.
Wei Changying could talk with Gu Rouzhang happily outside the city, but now she was concerned about her husband. Her uncle and aunt who were left to deal with the ancestral house of Mingpei Hall suggested they should sit for a while in the back hall and drink a cup of hot tea before they went to see Shen Cangfeng, but Wei Changying didn't listen and insisted to see Shen Cangfeng first.
The family uncle Shen Chu and his wife Mrs. Zhou couldn't persuade her and just sent someone to lead her. As Wei Changying was unwilling to drink a cup of tea first, Shen Canghui was inconvenient to stay with Gu Rouzhang and others and was concerned about her brother as well, so he asked to go with Wei Changying.
Arriving at the courtyard Shen Cangfeng lived in, they saw a row of jade trees in the vast courtyard was covered by heavy snow which made it difficult to distinguish what tree it was... But nobody cared about it now. They hurried to the corridor.
Wei Changying took off her red fox-fur robe and didn't know what to say to her husband yet while stepping into the door... Surprisedly, they saw a young lady with beautiful eyes and brow who preparing tea carefully outside the main room. Seeing Wei Changying, Sheng Canghui, and others come in one after another, the young lady made a gesture to stop them and pointed at the main room with some blame appearing in her eyebrow.
Wei Changying was excited to meet her husband soon after separating for a long time but she was on the alert instinctively when she saw a beautiful young lady outside of her husband's room. As she judged her again, the young lady was sixteen to seventeen years old. Apart from her beautiful eyes and brow, her dress was so bright. The light pink coat was with plum blossom pattern on the cross collar, exposing nearly an inch wide of pink underwear out of the coat and a colorful ribbon around her waist. She wore a primrose yellow skirt, silver clasp, and pearl with hair-tied spiral. Even in the Grand Preceptor's Mansion in the capital, Madam Su's followers like Man Lou all wore new clothes like this only in specific festivals.
Obviously, she was not a normal maidservant.
Wei Changying calmed down gradually with her eyes getting cold. She realized that this maidservant was not the right person to serve others. Mrs. He realized it as well and asked coldly, "Who are you? Why are you in my young master's room?"
"D*mn! Why couldn't you speak quietly? You might disturb the young master..." The maidservant heard Mrs. He's big voice and blamed her exaggeratedly with her hand covering her lips.
"Is my third brother in the room?" Shen Canghui realized the reason why his sister-in-law stopped walking and speaking, but he didn't want to waste time with a maidservant, so he interrupted the maidservant and said, "This is my third sister-in-law! What did you say?"
Mingpei Hall had prepared accommodation for Wei Changying and others. The maidservant surely knew Shen Cangfeng's wife would come here in person for concern about his injury. She should have realized who Wei Changying was, but she came to apologize after hearing Shen Cangfeng's words, "It's my mistake. It turns out to be the third young madam. I am Ruanyu, nice to meet..."
Reminded by Shen Canghui, Wei Changying realized that there was no need to fuss about a maidservant. Nobody could get close to Shen Cangfeng without Shen Cangfeng's permission.
Throwing her sleeves, Wei Changying said coldly, "Shut up. I will inquire of you after seeing my husband."
She thought the maidservant, Ruanyu, still wore like a girl, but it was uncertain whether Shen Cangfeng had done something to her because of the lonely military life. Thinking for a while, Wei Changying worried less about Shen Cangfeng and entered the inner room after Shen Canghui, but they were surprised when entering.
In the room, there were more than Shen Cangfeng.
An old man, who was strong and tall with serious facial features and white hair and beard, was sitting on the brick bed by the west window and holding a jar of wine, drinking on and off.
Seeing Shen Canghui and Wei Changying, the old man jumped off the brick bed hurriedly and asked," Are you the fourth uncle and third aunt of our Family?"
"..." Shen Cangfeng and Wei Changying didn't know who he was and looked at the bed through the half-pulled curtain. As his body was covered with brocade quilt and half of his pale face was exposed, Shen Cangfeng closed his eyes tightly. While the wounded was sleeping, without mentioning the restless maidservant, the old man was drinking wine in front of the patient in a good mood... What a mess it was!
Wei Changying frowned and said, "Who are you? Why are you drinking in front of my husband?"
The old man put on his shoes with embarrassment and coughed, "I... Uh, I am Shen Youjia, the son of the collateral branch of the Shen Family, and now the Lieutenant General of Western Liang."
He turned out to be his husband's family nephew and leader as well.
Wei Changying looked at the bed and hesitated, "You are..." He was Shen Cangfeng's leader and nephew, but it was not appropriate to call his official title while they were not in the office. If she called him nephew... It was difficult to call him nephew when seeing his white hair, so Wei Changying said vaguely, "How is my husband?"
Shen Youjia called her according to the title of their family, "Because of excessive loss of blood, my third uncle kept resting quietly for these days. Today I came here to discuss the military situation with him as usual. My third uncle was so pleased to hear the news and gave me a jar of Shuanglang wine as a present. My third uncle was sleepy before I finished my talk and went to sleep. I... I wanted to leave until I finish the wine... Uh..."
Wei Changying got to understand. Although Shen Cangfeng rested on the bed, he was still concerned about the military situation, so Shen Youjia came to discuss with him every day. Maybe he heard some good news today so he asked someone to fetch a jar of wine for Shen Youjia. As a result, Shen Cangfeng fell asleep for lack of strength, but Shen Youjia wanted to stay in the warm house to finish the wine rather than leave quietly.
At that time everybody was embarrassed, Shen Cangfeng's weak voice came from the bed, "Youjia, have my fourth brother and others entered the city?"
Shen Youjia was glad to say, "Be at ease, both my third aunt and fourth uncle are here now."
... His voice was loud enough to shake the curtain of the bed. Shen Cangfeng was so weak now that he could fall asleep when talking with someone. He must be bored with noise. Wei Changying said with anger, "You shut up!"
Shen Youjia was driven out of the door poorly. Shen Canghui sent his respect to his brother under his sister-in-law's cold stare and said goodbye quickly. When only the couple was left, Shen Cangfeng said with a smile, "Are you tired all the way?"
Although Madam Su said they reported his wound more seriously deliberately, now it might be the truth they told Emperor. He had got injured for almost three months, but he had to rest on the bed now. Compared to his spirit previously, he definitely risked losing his life.
His face was pale with his brow full of tiredness. His eyes were still bright, but not as keen as previous. If Wei Changying didn't see the beautiful maidservant outside, she must care about him very much.
Hearing his greeting, Wei Changying was silent for a while and said, "Just Okay. It was fortunate not to bring Shuguang with me."
"Shuguang is too young to tolerate the tough journey." Considering that his wife just missed her son in the capital, Shen Cangfeng smiled softly and put his hand out of the quilt with difficulty to hold her hand. Both of their hands were a little cold... Wei Changying put his hand back into the quilt and said lightly, "You are weak now. Don't be cold."
Shen Cangfeng let her put his hand into the quilt but curled his finger in Wei Changying's when she was about to pull her hand back. Wei Changying struggled to pull her hand back. Shen Cangfeng was weak enough to stop her, but he was so careful that he realized his wife had something wrong with him. Wei Changying asked before Sheng Cangfeng spoke, "Mother said that you didn't get injured heavily, but as far as I am concerned, you are not good enough now. Did you conceal the news?"
"Not at all." Shen Cangfeng frowned and said in low voice, "Come close. I will tell you."
Wei Changying listened to him and bent down. Sheng Cangfeng kissed her hair on the temples with a smile. Wei Changying wasn't surprised at his act and asked calmly, "What happened?"
"There is still snow on your hair. Ask someone to prepare hot water later and take a bath to avoid getting cold." Shen Cangfeng said, "Originally I didn't get injured heavily and could get up several days ago. But we looked down on Muxiuer who sent an assassin to kill me in the city. They hurt me so I had to rest on the bed again."
Wei Changying was surprised and cried, "What? Could the assassin sneak into the Mingpei Hall to kill you?"
