Chapter 319 The Fight

Wei Changying knew that Deng Zongqi and Deng Wanwan had been dependent on each other ever since they were young and they had a deep bond. Duanmu Xinmiao had used Deng Wanwan to trick Deng Zongqi, so there would inevitably be a fuss when Deng Wanwan woke up.

However, she hadn't known that Deng Wanwan, who had seemed so gentle and kind throughout the journey here and even a little shy at first, could become so fierce over matters relating to her brother. As Shen Cangfeng was still recovering from his injuries, the couple could not live in the same room. Although Wei Changying and Shen Cangfeng lived in the same courtyard, one lived in the east wing and the other in the west. When she still hadn't woken up completely, she had heard "Miss Duanmu! Help!" and thought that something had happened to her husband. Even when Duanmu Xinmiao had been there, they had had to shout like that. Thus, it had so shocked her that Wei Changying had woken up immediately.

Only when she called someone in did she realize that Shen Cangfeng was fine but that it was Duanmu Xinmiao who was in trouble.

Wei Changying was slightly relieved but scolded the maidservant who had come to report to her, "Didn't I tell you to keep an eye on both parties?" She had sent extra people to stand guard around both courtyards! They were only two young ladies. Even if it had been a herd of pigs that guarded the girls, they should have been able to manage it, not to mention that they were actually a bunch of people.

Wei Changying wondered whether these servants had deliberately colluded with each other, allowing Deng Wanwan and Duanmu Xinmiao to make a fuss, so that she, the young madam who was now in charge of the family, would lose face. Thinking of this possibility, Wei Changying scowled.

Seeing the change in her expression, the maidservant explained carefully, "Two hours ago, Miss Deng suddenly started rolling around on the bed, saying that she couldn't bear her stomach pain. Therefore, I came here to report it to Granny Huang first. Granny Huang thought you had worked hard during the daytime, so she went with me to check Miss Deng, but she couldn't find anything. The people around Miss Deng mentioned that Miss Duanmu had performed acupuncture on Miss Deng during the day, asking whether it was related to that. Granny Huang wasn't sure, so she sent someone over to ask Miss Duanmu."

Wei Changying stood up and opened her arms for Zhu Xian and Zhu Xuan to dress her, saying, "Continue!"

"Miss Duanmu thought it was very strange, so she personally went to the courtyard where Miss Deng lives. As she was going into the inner room, Miss Deng, who leaned against the bed and looked incredibly frail, pounced on her!"

Wei Changying lowered her arms, urged Zhu Xian to quickly tie the strap, and told Zhu Xuan to hand over a long hairpin. She casually tied her hair up, asking, "The two of them got into a fight? Did Xinmiao get hurt?"

The maidservant said in fear, "Miss Deng had a sharp hairpin hidden in her hand, so..."

"What?" Wei Changying knew that Deng Wanwan and Duanmu Xinmiao were not like her or Gu Ruozhang. They were both weak and delicate young ladies. Thus, on hearing that Deng Wanwan and Duanmu Xinmiao had gotten into a fight, she hadn't been very worried. She had thought that at most they would have a few bruises and that she only needed to get someone to make ointments and comfort them a bit. She had had no idea that Deng Wanwan would hide a sharp weapon. Suddenly, she looked serious, and her hand which was tying the hair paused. She said in a deep voice, "Then Xinmiao..."

The maidservant said, "It was in chaos. Before I could see things carefully, Granny Huang sent me to report to you. I saw Miss Duanmu stop it with her arm. There seemed to be blood!"

Wei Changying was slightly relieved to hear that Duanmu Xinmiao wasn't seriously injured nor had her face been hurt. However, her arm was hurt. There had been blood, after all! If there was a scar, as a girl... Thoughts racing through her mind, Wei Changying dressed and hurried through the door with her servants.

Mrs. Huang had arrived already. Although the incident had happened there, Mrs. Huang had separated the two ladies when Wei Changying arrived. One was in the east wing and the other in the west. Strong women were assigned to watch over them. Mrs. Huang waited for Wei Changying in the cold breeze under the eaves.

Seeing her, Wei Changying took off her fox fur coat and was about to put it around her, "Where is your fur coat, Granny? Why don't you wait inside? You're standing in the wind. You might catch a cold."

Mrs. Huang quickly pushed the coat away, "The two young ladies had fought quite fiercely. I was in between them, so I got hot and I was sweating a lot. I don't need a fur coat. Young madam, you have just come out of the soft sedan chair. Don't catch a cold."

Each trying to get the other one to take the coat, both of them entered the main hall. Wei Changying saw that things had been tidied up in a hurry. The maidservant who had reported the news earlier said that Deng Wanwan had tricked Duanmu Xinmiao into the inner room and suddenly attacked her. The inner room was at the back of the main hall, and there was a room for a maidservant, who kept the ladies company at night, to live in. Now, looking at the scene in the main hall, they could see how fiercely Deng Wanwan and Duanmu Xinmiao had been fighting. It seemed that they had fought all the way from the inner room to the outside.

Noticing Wei Changying's gaze, Mrs. Huang confirmed it to be true, saying, "Just now, the two ladies fought all the way from the inner room to the outside. I was worried that they would do something else inappropriate, so I sent everyone over to keep the two ladies company. I haven't had time to properly clean up here yet."

"It's fine." Wei Changying pondered for a moment, told the other servants to give them some space temporarily, and asked Mrs. Huang in a low voice, "Granny, while they were fighting, did you hear them say anything inappropriate when there were others around?"

Mrs. Huang understood what she meant, shaking her head and saying, "Although Miss Deng was furious, she still had her self-control. She blamed Miss Duanmu for prescribing the wrong medicine and nearly killing her elder brother."

"What about Xinmiao?" Wei Changying was not surprised that Deng Wanwan, whom her cousin Song Zaishui had regarded as a good person, knew how to behave. On the other hand, she was more worried about Duanmu Xinmiao, who had just started an argument with Deng Zongqi but had instantly said that she had been ordered by Honored Consort Deng to watch the Shen Family before she had left. The two maidservants with Deng Wanwan could be easily killed, but Mrs. Huang was with many servants who had been raised and had grown up in Western Liang.

Even if she killed all these people and she controlled their families, with so many people missing suddenly, outsiders would figure out that something serious had happened.

Wei Changying only hoped that Duanmu Xinmiao hadn't shouted out anything that she shouldn't have, as what she had done during the daytime.

Fortunately, Duanmu Xinmiao wasn't totally dumb. Mrs. Huang said, "Miss Duanmu said Mr. Deng hadn't taken his medicine as she had told him to. The two ladies kept arguing over this point and didn't say anything else."

Only then did Wei Changying feel relieved. She comforted Mrs. Huang a little more, pondered a bit, and went to the room in the east wing where Deng Wanwan stayed.

From what the maidservant had said, Duanmu Xinmiao was the one who had lost. Nevertheless, it didn't seem that Deng Wanwan had come off unscathed. She was sitting on the edge of the bed with her hair disheveled. Her sleeves and skirt were rolled up high. Maidservants had brought medication and were applying it to her.

Since they were all women, Wei Changying told someone to inform her before she entered, and Deng Wanwan didn't especially cover up her wounds. Deng Wanwan could only croak and bow with her hands by her waist, saying, "I can't get up at the moment. I'm sorry, Changying."

"Wanwan, you are being too polite." Wei Changying sighed and walked towards her to look at her injuries. Deng Wanwan didn't pretend. She was really hurt badly! There were big bruises all over her arms, legs, and knees. When she got closer, she could see an indistinct scratch under her left cheek, as if a needle had sliced across. Wei Changying almost immediately thought of the silver needles which doctors usually used.

She was secretly glad that she had chosen to come over to see Deng Wanwan first.

Deng Wanwan had caused the trouble, so Wei Changying should have gone to comfort Duanmu Xinmiao first. But Duanmu Xinmiao was closer to Wei Changying, and in terms of what had happened during the day, it was Duanmu Xinmiao who had started it first. At that time, Wei Changying had already comforted her but hadn't done the same thing to Deng Wanwan. Therefore, Wei Changying thought it would be better to come to check on Deng Wanwan first.

Seeing how badly Deng Wanwan was hurt, Wei Changying thought it would have been bad if she hadn't come here first but had gone to Duanmu Xinmiao's place. Deng Wanwan's brother had almost been killed, and she was covered in bruises. If the host family had gone to comfort Duanmu Xinmiao first, no matter how kind Deng Wanwan was, she would have held a grudge against them.

It was not that Wei Changying was afraid of her, but since she had no intention of helping Duanmu Xinmiao against Deng Zongqi and Deng Wanwan, she naturally wanted to try to persuade them to make peace. If she wanted them to make peace but offended one party at the beginning, it would be a false peace. Therefore, it would be pointless.

Inevitably, she had to be very attentive to Deng Wanwan and apologize to her. Deng Wanwan let her maidservants carefully apply the medication, saying calmly, "I don't deserve your apology, Changying. Honestly, it's my fault. I caused trouble in Mingpei Hall and made your life difficult. I am a weak woman who wants to avenge my brother, but there was no other way to get Duanmu Xinmiao close to me. I hope you can forgive me, Changying."

Wei Changying told the inessential people to leave the room and told Zhu Xian and Zhu Xuan to take over the task of applying medication to Deng Wanwan. She sighed softly, "I know you are upset! Mr. Deng was worried about you, too! Xinmiao was being silly, but before she got you back in the evening, she had already given the antidote to Mr. Deng. Having taken the antidote and eaten nutritious food, he will recover in two or three days, so don't worry too much."

Deng Wanwan pursed her lips and said, "Changying, I heard these things from my maidservants around me after I woke up! That's why I didn't stick the hairpin into Duanmu Xinmiao's face or throat, but only into her arm! She didn't kill my brother, so I won't kill her. However, she dared to use me to trick my brother. I couldn't let her get away with it!"

While Deng Wanwan was speaking, she looked as if it had been only right and proper. A trace of ruthlessness flashed through her clear dark eyes!

Wei Changying thought it was easy to see one's true nature when one was on the edge. Just thinking how delicate and quiet Deng Wanwan usually was, who would have thought that she could be so calm, being covered in bruises, after she had had a fight like a rough woman on the street?

Having pondered for a while, Wei Changying said, "In that case, what are you going to do now?"

Deng Wanwan immediately said, "Duanmu Xinmiao wanted to murder my brother. Although it hadn't produced irreversible consequences, it did hurt him. Since I have hurt Duanmu Xinmiao, we are even. If she doesn't hurt my brother in the future, I will not cause trouble for her. However, I will never call her 'Xinmiao' ever."

"Since you have thought it through, I won't say more." Seeing Deng Wanwan being so decisive, Wei Changying didn't say any of the things she had already prepared. She then said, "You should take care of yourself. Where did you get the medication?"

Deng Wanwan looked at her, "Granny Huang gave it to me."

"Then you can use it without worry." Wei Changying reached out her finger to touch the cut on her cheek. Having carefully examined it, she sighed in relief, "It won't leave a scar."

Deng Wanwan said without much enthusiasm, "Granny Huang also said the same thing just now."

Wei Changying noticed that she seemed indifferent on purpose. Wei Changying thought that Deng Wanwan was still young. Although Deng Wanwan had said the words decisively, she couldn't calm herself down in a while. She pretended to be a decisive person. Wei Changying didn't say anything but told her to take care, and she promised to send Mrs. Huang over every day to check on her injuries. She also called the people who had been serving her before back in, and then she left.
