She stared at the door like it was the edge of a cliff. One step forward and she could fall. One step back, and she’d still be trapped. Her lungs fought to keep rhythm, but it felt like even they were starting to give up on her.

“Pick the little things you think are important,” Alexander said, his voice smooth but sharp enough to slice through her panic.

“And follow me to the car.”
