“You’re staring again,” I said, my voice low, sitting across from Alexander in the cafeteria, the hum of employees’ chatter filling the air, the smell of coffee and sandwiches sharp.

His hazel eyes stayed on me, watchful, restrained, not his usual flirty intensity, and it set me on edge, his plate of salad untouched, his fingers still on his fork.
