“She’s gone, man,” I said, my voice low, phone pressed to my ear, leaning back in the cafeteria chair, the clatter of trays fading as Megan’s figure slipped through the door.

The air smelled of burnt coffee and greasy fries, the tables half-empty, employees’ chatter quiet, giving me a chance to call Jake, my best friend since college, the only guy I could trust with this disaster.
