The house had changed.

At first, it was subtle curtains pulled tighter, doors that clicked differently when shut, the faint echo of footsteps in the hallway at odd hours. Then the changes became harder to ignore.

Windows that had once opened to let the evening breeze in were now sealed tight, no latch, no give. The front door, which I had walked through freely countless times, now bore a keypad I didn’t know the code to.
