We were all jerked forward as the SUV came to a stop and the pungent smell of burning rubber filled the air. The seatbelt sunk uncomfortably into my ribs, tightening my chest, but the adrenaline rushing through me made the pain go away. The road ahead was obscured by a gray cloud as smoke billowed from the hood.
