The truth of our predicament hit me the instant Clement vanished into the smoke. Mira clung to me, her little hands shaking, while Lawrence was bleeding, scarcely able to stand. With a protecting grip on my arm, the Beta pushed us in the direction of the SUV. As the dark shapes of Clement's soldiers started to enclose me once more, my heart thumped in my chest.

"Lawrence, we must leave immediately!" I pleaded, my voice cracking with desperation.
