The Weight of Paths

It was before afternoon they arrived in the lower valley. There the snow had become thin, broken here and there by tracts of brown grass, and bare bodies of the ground. There was a stream running on an edge of the slope, and a sheet of thin ice was floating over dark water. Ravens sat in the trees throughout, and silent watched.
