Footprints in Frost

After some time they continued to walk together without saying anything. The trees were trailing them with lengthy shadows. The snow collected in their hair, and in their coats. It mellowed down the world, but not the burden within them. The woods were pine sap and icy smelling. Branches as small as their feet smashed. The twins were still near each other, alert now, not frightened, but now awakened like children must never be awakened.
