The night was quiet…too quiet.

For a while, only the whisper of the wind filled the dark stretch of forest outside the cabin. Desiree had drifted off just by the makeshift bed of the fireplace, curled beneath a blanket, her hand resting on her stomach. Roman sat nearby, keeping watch as usual, though his body begged for rest. The silence was unsettling, too thick to make the sound of the woodfloor creaking seem louder than it should be.

Finally he succumbed to it and fell asleep.
