3. A BODY IN THE DISTANCE

FENRIR

"What do you mean she evaded you?" I demanded angrily. I could not believe my ears.

"We're really sorry, my Alpha. Two days ago, I swear, we had her location in sight but then, she was gone." My Beta said, over the phone.

"What do you mean gone? That witch is the reason my parents died and you better find her or suffer grave punishments." I responded.

"I've sent out a task force, my alpha although there is a rumour that she infiltrated an Alpha's hotel room but I speculate..." He started speaking.

I had no time for this. I had to return to the city urgently and I was already getting angered.

"I have no time for rumours and speculation. Unless you're a housewife, you would come to me with facts, Ragnar. Find her." I said and then hung up.

For a minute, I was pissed off and distraught. I lost my cool as I punched the elevator wall causing it to cave with the outline of my fists. Without a single care in the world, I started walking out as soon as the doors opened to the garage.

My driver was already waiting for me by the side of the car and as soon as I approached, he opened the door.

"Good evening, My Alpha. Miss Celeste dropped off your itinerary a couple of minutes ago. Is there anything you'd like me to get before we leave?" He asked me.

I unbuttoned the single button of my suit jacket as I slid inside majestically.

"Just drive, Adolf." I said to him,

He bowed as he gently closed the door after me and then went around the car to the driver's seat.

A few moments later we were en route to the big city. I was trying to go through the itinerary on my iPad but the more I tried to focus, the harder it was because somehow, all I could remember was the look on my mother's face when she placed me in that trap door and asked me to stay silent.

I had the witch already and was already plotting to punish her when I was told she escaped a week ago. Then I was told she had been spotted and my expectations grew only to hear this again.

"How incompetent?!" I muttered angrily.

"Did you say something, Alpha?" Adolf asked me as he looked at me through the rear view mirror.

"Just drive. I need silence." I responded.

"My apologies, my Alpha." He responded.

We had been driving for thirty minutes when I started feeling a feeling of suffocation. I felt really trapped and even though the air conditioner was on, I was finding it hard to breathe. I knew already that this was a trauma response to what I had been through back then and even when I loosened my tie, I could not breathe well.

It was already evening and the sunset left a beautiful orange across the sky. I had been hoping that I would have been home by nightfall.

I guess not.

"Stop the car." I said to him and he brought the car to an abrupt halt.

I stepped out before he could get down and then came out the other side as I faced the massive stretch of land that laid ahead of me. I took off my suit jacket and dropped it on my seat before slamming the door as I squatted.

Adolf came out after me with a can of water.

"Here, My Alpha." He said as he handed it to me.

I took a look at him but then accepted the bottle of water as I rose up. In one chug the contents were open.

"What back lies to the East?" I asked him.

"It's the Red Moon pack, my Alpha. I heard from Celeste that they would be sending delegations our way this week." He said.

"For what?" I demanded.

"Same as before. A partnership." He said to me,

"They can keep dreaming. Wait, what is that?" I muttered as I stared ahead.

"Something wrong...?" He was asking when I spotted it.

There seemed to be vultures circling around the air in the distance and there was something on the ground. I broke into a run with the need to investigate.

"My Alpha, wait! The boundaries are really..." Whatever Adolf was saying, I could care less as I was running and had the wind in my ears.

In a short time, I had arrived and the vultures scattered away except a stubborn one that was digging its beak into a body.

It was a woman's body and she was not moving.

Clearly, she was dead and I noticed the mark on her back that was still red. What sort of death was this?

I felt for whoever she was but then wondered if she was Glinda.

I approached now and the remaining vulture flew away as I kicked her so she rolled onto her back. This was no Glinda but she sure as hell was the most beautiful woman I had ever seen.

That was when I noticed her finger twitch. At first, I thought it was my eyes but then I listened and I heard her heart beating and I knew she was alive.

Very quickly, I lifted her into my arms as I rushed back to the car. A confused Adolf sighted me approaching and ran towards me.

"My Alpha..."

"Start the car. Drive to the nearest hospital immediately. She's alive." I said.

He did as I had asked and we were soon heading to the hospital. I held her close all through until we arrived.

We had to wait in the reception after she had been taken away. My shirt was covered in her blood as I kept pacing. There was something about this woman that seemed to make me worry so much about her.

"My Alpha, it's late already and you have a meeting in the morning. I think whoever she is, she's in safe hands. Let's go." He said to me,

"We are waiting." I said to him and he noticed my tone.

"Okay. But could you sit down at least?" He asked me.

That was when I noticed one of the nurses that had gone with her into the emergency ward coming out in a hurry.

I went over to her immediately.

"How is She?" I demanded.

"Sir, you have to wait. The doctor is doing all he can to save your wife's life and that of the babies." She said to me,

"Babies?" I asked, confused.

"Didn't you know, your wife was pregnant." She said to me and rushed off as I was muttering.

"She's not my wife..." I said in a whisper.
