4. PREGNANT STRANGER

FENRIR

"Sir, your phone is ringing. It's the Beta." Adolf said to me suddenly.

"Tell him I'm busy." I responded.

"But, Sir..." He started and I glared at him.

"What did I just say, Adolf?" I demanded angrily.

"You're busy." He responded as he walked away, talking to someone on the phone.

I returned my gaze to the nurse but she was already trying to walk away when I reached for her, taking hold of her arm.

She turned and looked at me, clearly not comfortable with the fact that I had put my hands on her.

"I'm sorry. That was a mistake. You say she's pregnant and the babies are fine, what about her?" I demanded.

"If you're not her husband, then who are you? I really need a member of her family to talk to because she's in really bad shape." She said to me,

Perhaps, I should have accepted that she was my wife then?

No.

If I had, I might be seen as an abusive husband or something worse.

"I'm her family." I said to her,

She raised her eyebrow suspiciously.

"I thought you just said you're not her husband?" She asked me.

"Is the husband the only member of a woman's family? She's my cousin twice removed from my father's side." I responded.

"Very well then, what's her name?" She asked me.

I thought about it. I did not know her name but hell, I needed to come up with something.

"Her name is Riri." I responded.

"Riri?" The nurse asked me.

Alright, this was beginning to feel like an interrogation of sorts and I did not appreciate it. If only she had a little idea of who I was, then perhaps she would cease her multiple questions.

"Are you out to save life or do you want to play cop?" I demanded.

"I'm sorry. I'm just following protocols." She responded.

"Well, damn protocols. Just save her already!" I yelled.

"Alright. Are there any underlying allergies that she has?" She asked me.

She was a werewolf clearly, and we rarely had any of such. Hence, I did not see any problem with it.

"None that I know of. How critical is she?" I asked.

"The burn was really bad and deep but she'll be fine. Here, sign this." She said to me,

I scanned through the document and then signed. The nurse went away and I had to go sit down on one of the benches.

Shortly after, Adolf walked in again.

"Is she going to be alright, my Alpha?" He asked me.

"What did Ragnar have to say?" I demanded.

"He said he would be leading the men to the other borders to search for Glinda." He responded.

"Okay." I said.

"Pardon my asking, my Alpha, but something seems to have piqued your interest in this woman. Is there a chance that she's your..." He did not finish.

"Adolf, since when did it become a crime to render help to people?" I demanded.

"My apologies, my Alpha." He said yet again.

"Do your thing and stop asking a lot of questions." I said to him,

We sat out there for sometime until then, she was wheeled out, and she looked really peaceful as she slept. I could not really understand what was happening with her and who would want to hurt her.

Nevertheless, we were informed that she would be needing a lot of rest and had been put on sedatives.

"The sedatives would see her through the morning but I need to tell you, she went through severe abuse from what I could tell." The doctor said to me,

His eyes, suggestive.

"I see." I responded.

"I really think you should involve the cops." He added.

"Believe me, we're taking a look at this already." I responded.

"Very well then, the nurses would be on standby to make sure that she's alright. You look like you need to get some rest or something." He said, looking at my bloodied shirt.

"Of course but I have one question, did you say that she's pregnant with babies?" I asked him.

"Yes. Twins but it's really hard to determine their gender right now." He said to me,

This news made me feel really confused. It was like I was feeling cold about it but that was alright.

I decided that it would be best if I spent the night and demanded that Adolf go home.

For some reason best known to me, the moment I entered her ward and I saw her again, all I could feel was a desire to remain by her side.

This was not a mate bond. This was something else and strange.

Adolf eventually went home and I sat down beside her bed observingly.

Eventually, I fell asleep and I found myself dreaming about the moment I had seen her. I prefer to think about it as a nightmare that eventually generated the moment my parents passed.

When I opened my eyes again, it was already morning and someone was muttering in their sleep.

"No Kaelin, I swear. I'm not a witch. You have it all wrong...Kaelin...Kaelin... please...no..." She was muttering.

I rose up instantly and I noticed that her brows were furrowed and she was seemingly in a bad state.

I walked over to her as I instinctively touched her forehead.

Suddenly, she gasped and then opened her eyes.

Her pupils were really beautiful but they were in a rapid movement of their own as she tried to adjust to the surroundings.

Then she focused her retina on me and was shocked.

"Who are you?" She asked me as she tried to sit up immediately.

I reached for her, trying to keep her still.

"You're safe. You're in the hospital." I said to her,

"The hospital? But how...?" She muttered when she held her head in her hands, then her eyes widened.

"Remember what happened to you?" I asked her.

"Where's Kaelin?" She muttered.

"Who's Kaelin?" I asked her.

"Kaelin is my...oh...was my..." She did not finish her statement.

"You know you kept saying his name in your sleep. Makes me wonder if he's the father of your babies." I said.

"Babies? What babies?" She demanded.
