The Fall Of Shadows

The press conference was scheduled for 10 a.m. sharp.

By 9:45, the Lancaster Global media center was at full capacity journalists elbow-to-elbow, cameras rolling, and social media already abuzz with rumors. Whispers of a corporate bombshell had leaked from Sandra’s cleverly orchestrated teaser the night before:

“The truth has no expiration date. We’re ready to share ours.”

Steve adjusted his navy suit in the dressing room mirror while Sandra stood behind him, her hand brushing the lapel flat with calm precision.

“Ready?” she asked softly.

He turned to her, his eyes warm but focused. “With you here? Always.”

The doors to the media floor opened, and a hush fell across the crowd as Steve stepped into the spotlight, with Sandra close beside him.

Steve began, his voice even and unshaken. “We’re here to set the record straight. Lancaster Global is not a company led by whispers or shadows. We’re built on the foundation of truth.”

Sandra stepped forward next, her tablet in hand.

“The recent destabilization of our systems was not the result of poor leadership. It was sabotage calculated, deliberate, and orchestrated by a senior board member with a clear motive to seize power.”

Gasps echoed. Cameras clicked in rapid bursts. Then, with one swipe, Sandra played the damning footage.

There was Ethan Draven caught red-handed in a meeting with a hacker-for-hire. His voice was unmistakable. His intentions crystal clear.

“I want this system unstable. I want Steve out of the picture.”

The room broke into chaos.

Sandra let the noise rise for a few moments before she continued, her voice cutting through the air like a blade.

“These are the lengths some men will go to in order to keep power. But we’re not afraid to shine a light into those corners. That’s what today is about.”

Steve concluded, “Effective immediately, Ethan Draven is suspended from the board pending a full legal investigation. A vote will be held to remove him permanently.”

Back in the boardroom two hours later, Ethan stood like a man trapped in a burning house.

“This is a witch hunt,” he hissed, slamming his palm on the table. “You’re fabricating evidence. You”

“We didn’t fabricate anything,” Steve cut in coolly. “But we did give you every opportunity to stop. You chose the war. Now deal with the consequences.”

The boardroom voted unanimously.

Ethan’s seat was stripped.

Security escorted him out under the flashing eyes of the press.

It was a satisfying fall one that should have marked the end of the battle.

But darkness rarely disappears quietly.

That evening, Sandra and Steve sat on the rooftop once more, this time watching the sun dip behind the Phoenix skyline.

“We did it,” Sandra whispered.

Steve took her hand. “We did.”

But before she could reply, her phone buzzed.

An anonymous email.

She frowned, opening it instinctively and froze.

Attached was a photo: her and Steve, candid, taken through what looked like a long-lens camera. In the background… a warehouse—burned, familiar.

Her blood ran cold.

Steve noticed immediately. “What is it?”

She handed him the phone, and he stared at the image in silence.

Then he read the message below:

“The shadows weren’t only Ethan’s. You’ve made new enemies. Watch your back.”

Sandra’s voice trembled. “That’s the warehouse from the hack last year before we ever met. How did someone…?”

Steve’s jaw tightened. “This isn’t Ethan’s style. Someone else is watching us.”

He stood abruptly. “I’ll call Jason. We need full digital sweeps. No more leaks. No more surprises.”

Sandra touched his arm. “We just won a war. We can’t afford to walk into another one blind.”

He looked at her, and for the first time in weeks, she saw fear flicker beneath his calm.

Not fear for himself.

Fear for her.

Later that night, alone in their penthouse, Steve poured a glass of whiskey and stood at the window overlooking the city.

Sandra approached quietly and wrapped her arms around him from behind. “We’re not going to fall,” she said softly. “No matter who’s next.”
