The full moon loomed over the Northern Crescent Pack territory, illuminating the large windows of the Alpha's residence with its soft glow. Within the war room, the atmosphere was charged. Alpha Kael faced away from the table, hands clenched behind him, observing the night sky intently with a knitted brow.
“Are you sure this is the sole option?” he inquired, his tone a deep rumble.
His Beta, Rowan, was positioned on the other side of the room, thumbing through a hefty binder.
“Affirmative, Alpha.” To fulfill the Elders' demands and be crowned as Alpha King, you need to provide an heir by the next Blood Moon. That provides us with five months. "Just sufficient time for a full-term pregnancy."
Kael breathed out forcefully, the muscles in his jaw twitching. The recollection of the witch’s prophecy resonated in his thoughts like a ghostly tune.
"You will endure hardship to discover your destined partner... and upon finding her, she will incite conflict." The wrongdoings of your father will impact your home. "Only a successor can safeguard your throne."
“Keep it anonymous,” Kael stated, facing the room once more. “She must not be aware of the father's identity.” I don’t want strings. I have no desire for expectations. "I desire to have a child, nothing more."
Rowan lifted an eyebrow. "Do you believe it's wise to hide the truth from the woman who is bearing your child?"
Kael's gaze deepened. “I’m not providing her with an option.”
Rowan nodded after a brief pause. “Absolutely fine.” I will organize plans via private methods. I will locate a healthy individual who is financially in need to agree to the conditions and who has no ties to any of the prominent bloodlines. "You will stay unidentified."
Kael responded with a brief nod.
“Ensure her safety.” No media, no inquisitive wolves lurking nearby. And generously compensate her…monthly payments, full coverage of medical costs, a relocation package upon delivery. "She will have everything she needs." “
But what if she inquires?”
"She will sign an agreement."
“A clause of silence,” Kael stated coldly. "I have no use for her inquisitiveness." “I require her uterus.”
Six months afterward… In a compact flat on the city's fringe, Rayna faced a well-dressed man in a dark grey suit. His presence exuded authority, a wolf. A wolf employed by a significant figure…someone she was forbidden to recognize.
She looked down at the contract once more, her eyebrows knitted together.
“Let me make sure I understand this,” she said deliberately. "You expect me to act as a surrogate for someone..." I have no idea who he is. I will not see him. "And all health and individual requirements will be covered?"
The man agreed. "Exactly." You will receive artificial insemination at a private clinic. Your identity will remain confidential. Upon birth, you will transfer all parental rights, and a relocation package will be offered to you…if you decide to accept it. "You will not be permitted to communicate with the child or the intended parent."
Rayna's hands shook a bit as she turned the page.
“And I will receive this sum every month?” she inquired, indicating the number.
"Indeed," the man replied. “And a final payment once the child is safely born.” You will receive access to a personal midwife, safe housing, and a wellness check each month.
Rayna paused. She was out of money, and Luca required funds for his tuition. Every bit of her savings was spent on his tuition. She was out of money, without a backup plan. This… this might offer her and Luca a new beginning. A way to rebuild.
Nevertheless, there was something about it that bothered her.
“I'm not going to be sold or anything, am I?” she questioned warily.
The man didn’t so much as blink. “This is a valid surrogacy initiative.” The client is affluent, powerful, and highly confidential. "There is no hidden agenda other than securing a healthy successor."
Successor?.
Rayna’s eyes squinted a bit.
This was intended for a powerful individual. Maybe a pack leader? This could account for the concealment.
She couldn’t
quite understand why, but that word sent a shiver down her spine.
Successor… She signed it.
A week later, Rayna was taken to an upscale private fertility clinic located on the city's outskirts. Everything seemed excessively refined, excessively immaculate. However, she was accompanied by a compassionate nurse who described each aspect of the procedure.
Insemination through artificial means. Hormone tracking. Take a break. Nutrition.
“Can I know one thing about the donor?” Rayna inquired.
"Just a single thing." "Is he… a decent individual?"
The nurse halted. "He's… resolute." Faithful to his own. “He’ll go to any lengths to safeguard his own.”
Rayna agreed with a slight nod. "Alright." "That's enough."
The process began.
Back at the Northern Crescent estate, Rowan gave Kael an envelope that was sealed.
“It's completed.” She has undergone insemination. All files are confidential, and the clinic personnel signed privacy agreements. The surrogate is in good health and willing to co-operate.
Kael received the envelope and looked over the attached report. The woman's picture was obscured for privacy, yet he noticed the key details—age, health, no connections, no warning signs.
His wolf remained unresponsive. No movements. Disinterest. Simply frigid, robotic disengagement.
Excellent. That’s the way it had to be.
"When will we find out if it worked?"
“In roughly a month,” Rowan stated.
Kael acknowledged, re-folding the paper.
“Maintain silence.” “If the Elders discover that I’m employing a surrogate, they will attempt to prevent the coronation.”
Rowan offered a slight smile. “They won’t know a thing from me.”
Present Day
Rayna looked at the test strip she held, her heart racing.
Pregnant.
She lowered herself onto the side of her bed, one hand instinctively resting on her flat abdomen.
It seemed unreal…simultaneously frightening and amazing.
The cheque arrived the following morning. More cash than she had ever encountered at one time. The directions were unmistakable: She would be relocated to a confidential, safe property in the city, undergo frequent check-ins, and have all her needs fulfilled.
Rayna softly placed her hand on her belly. "Seems like it's just you and me now, darling."
She was unaware of the father's identity. She may never find out. Yet, a quiet voice within her suggested that this child would alter everything.
What she was unaware of was that, far away, at the center of the strongest pack in the area, Alpha Kael faced a full-length mirror, tweaking his ceremonial cloak. His crowning was approaching quickly.
Despite not knowing her identity, the child developing within Rayna would share his bloodline.
The successor.
And his destiny.
