Chapter 31: Flames in the Mist

The mountain was a fading silhouette behind them, swallowed by the morning mist. Xiulan led the group through the dense forest below, each step deliberate, weighted with purpose. The ground was damp, soft with moss, yet the fire within him never wavered — not a flame of destruction, but one of resolve and clarity.

Yanmei walked at his side, silent, ever-alert. Shen scouted ahead, his senses honed from battles that had aged him beyond his years. The rest followed in tight formation, eyes scanning not only the wilderness but the memories that trailed them like shadows.

The Vermilion Sect would be searching. Their elders despised chaos they could not control — and Xiulan had become the storm they feared.

“We can’t run forever,” Yanmei said at last. Her voice was calm but edged with concern. “Where are we going?”

Xiulan paused beneath a twisted, ancient tree. He traced the burnt edge of a map Shen had salvaged from the temple ruins. His finger hovered over a small mark near the northern reaches.

“The Frost Valley,” he said. “A hidden stronghold. The Iron Monks used it during the Fire Purge.”

Shen’s eyes widened. “That place… it’s cursed. Nobody who went there ever returned.”

Xiulan’s lips curled into a faint smile. “Good. That means they won’t follow.”

Hours passed as they crossed forgotten trails, bypassed shattered statues, and skirted remnants of civilizations long buried. With each step, Xiulan felt the Eternal Ember shifting within — no longer demanding dominance, but watching, patient, coiled like a tiger in tall grass.

At dusk, the river marking the threshold of Frost Valley appeared. Mist rolled over its surface like smoke, chilling the air and carrying an eerie silence that pressed against their ears.

“I don’t feel the demon anymore,” whispered one of the disciples.

Shen’s eyes narrowed. “Because something older lives here.”

Xiulan turned to his companions, his voice calm but firm. “Whatever lies ahead, this is our path. We no longer fight to protect the sect… we fight to protect each other. We fight to uncover what lies beyond mere power.”

With that, he stepped into the mist.

Behind him, they followed — into legend, into shadow, into the unknown.
