Night draped the room in silver light, quiet and cold.

I sat on the edge of the large bed, my knees drawn up tightly, my eyes locked onto the empty cradle standing across the room. The moonlight glinted softly off its frame—smooth wood with carved wolves decorating the edges. The cradle rocked slightly from the wind sneaking gently through the cracks in the window. For a terrifying heartbeat, I truly imagined hearing a tiny cry rise from it.
