Chapter 0002: The New Reality

Luna woke to an empty bed and the sound of laughter drifting up from the gardens below. She'd barely slept, and when she finally did drift off near dawn, Marcus never returned to their room.

Their room. Was it even theirs anymore?

She dragged herself to the window and immediately wished she hadn't. Marcus and Celeste were walking through the rose garden, deep in conversation. Even from three stories up, Luna could see the way they moved in sync, the invisible pull between them evident in every gesture.

A sharp knock interrupted her spiral of thoughts.

"Luna? It's Mia. Can I come in?"

Luna quickly pulled on a silk robe and opened the door. Her friend's worried expression confirmed that news of last night's revelation had already spread.

"How bad is it?" Luna asked, stepping aside to let Mia enter.

"Bad." Mia didn't sugarcoat it, which Luna appreciated. "The whole pack is talking. Some are saying you'll step down as Luna, and others think Marcus will reject Celeste for you. The elders are in emergency session."

Luna sank onto the bed. "He can't reject her, Mia. You've seen them together. The bond is real."

"So, what are you going to do?"

Before Luna could answer, another knock echoed through the room. This time, it was Marcus's voice calling from the other side.

"Luna? We need to talk."

Mia squeezed Luna's hand. "I'll be in the healing wing if you need me."

After Mia left, Luna reluctantly opened the door. Marcus stood in the hallway, fully dressed despite the early hour. His hair was disheveled, suggesting he'd run his hands through it repeatedly—his tell for stress.

"Did you sleep at all?" Luna asked, despite herself.

"No." He entered the room cautiously, as if she might bolt. "Luna, about last night—"

"Don't." She held up a hand. "Don't apologize for something that isn't your fault. The moon goddess chose Celeste for you. I can't compete with that."

"You're not competing with anyone. You're my Luna, my partner in leading this pack."

"And what is she?"

Marcus was quiet for a long moment. "She's my fated mate."

The simple statement cut deeper than any elaborate explanation could have. Luna nodded, wrapping her arms around herself.

"The pack is confused," Marcus continued. "They need to see us united. Whatever happens between us privately, we need to present a strong front."

"Whatever happens between us privately?" Luna repeated. "Marcus, what exactly are you asking of me?"

He had the decency to look uncomfortable. "I'm asking you to stay. To remain as my Luna while I... while I explore this bond with Celeste."

Luna stared at him in disbelief. "You want me to play the supportive wife while you court another woman. In front of our entire pack."

"It's not like that—"

"It's exactly like that." Luna moved to her closet, pulling out clothes with sharp, angry movements. "You want me to smile and nod while you follow your biological urges. You want me to remain Luna in name while she becomes your true partner."

"Celeste isn't trying to replace you."

Luna laughed bitterly. "Isn't she? Marcus, I've led this pack beside you for three years. I've handled the politics, the social dynamics, and the day-to-day operations that keep everything running smoothly. What exactly will my role be when your fated mate settles in?"

Marcus was quiet, and that silence was answer enough.

Luna disappeared into the bathroom to change, needing the physical barrier between them. When she emerged, she found Marcus standing by the window, watching the gardens where Celeste now sat alone, reading.

"She's beautiful," Luna admitted quietly.

"Yes, she is."

"And accomplished, I'm sure. Daughter of an Alpha, raised to be a leader."

"Luna—"

"I'm not fishing for compliments, Marcus. I'm trying to understand my place in this new reality." She sat on the edge of the bed, suddenly exhausted. "Because right now, I feel like I'm being asked to step aside gracefully while pretending it's my choice."

Marcus turned from the window, his amber eyes conflicted. "You know I care about you. What we built together—"

"What we built together is about to be tested in ways we never imagined." Luna stood, straightening her shoulders. "Fine. I'll stay. I'll play the part of the understanding Luna who's secure enough in her position to welcome her mates' fated bond."

Relief flickered across Marcus's face, but Luna wasn't finished.

"But I won't be humiliated, Marcus. I won't be the pitied figure who hangs on while being replaced piece by piece. If you want me to stay, then I will remain your equal partner in all pack decisions. I keep my voice, my authority, and my dignity."

"Of course. Nothing about your role as Luna changes."

Luna wished she could believe him. But she'd seen this story play out in other packs. The chosen mate gradually pushed aside as the fated mate took precedence. It was as predictable as the phases of the moon.

"There's something else," Marcus said, his voice careful. "The pack will want to see us together at the alliance celebration tonight. As a united front."

"With Celeste there as well?"

"Yes. As our honored guest and liaison."

Luna closed her eyes, imagining the evening ahead. Smiling while her mate's fated bond was celebrated alongside a political alliance. Pretending her heart wasn't breaking with every breath.

"I'll be there," she said finally. "But Marcus? This conversation isn't over. We have a lot more to discuss about how this arrangement is going to work."

After Marcus left, Luna allowed herself five minutes to cry. Then she wiped her tears, straightened her spine, and began preparing for what might be the most difficult performance of her life.

She was still the Luna of Silverpine Pack. For now, that had to be enough.

But as she watched Celeste from the window, gracefully interacting with pack members who were already gravitating toward her natural authority, Luna couldn't shake the feeling that she was watching her replacement getting comfortable in what used to be her world.

The real question was: how long before everyone else realized it, too?
