Saint was afraid he confessed too soon. He did not want to intimidate her, but he was afraid he would distance herself from him now that she already knew who he was.
He never even asked if Carol had a boyfriend.
Not to mention that he was still in a relationship.
It took a while before Carol spoke. She was staring at her half-filled water goblet as if the answer lied there. Then she looked up and met his eyes.
"I want you to know that I really enjoyed your company and my decision has nothing to do with your status-"
"I know you're not that kind of person," he interrupted.
He could hear his heart beating when Carol finally smiled, "I like you too."
It was a whirlwind romance. Who would have thought that the logical, pragmatic Saint would do something unthinkable? He was proud of every decision he made and he would never do anything to risk his reputation.
But he felt that, for once in his life, he had done something right. It was a decision he made for himself. For once, he chose to be selfish and it made him feel alive.
He suddenly realized Jewel was a convenience. She was perfect in every way and his parents adored her. But she was predictable, far from the fire and adventure he was longing for. There was something missing in his life which he only figured out after meeting Carol.
"You're avoiding me."
Saint was startled upon hearing a familiar voice. He turned on the switch and light flooded the luxurious, two hundred square meter penthouse.
He took a deep breath upon seeing Jewel, sitting in the sofa. Her red dress made her more sophisticated and fierce. Saint had always found her insanely beautiful. But at that time, his mind was wandering somewhere else.
"I'm sorry," he quickly apologized. "I have been a little busy lately. I've been stuck in the office for the past weeks, working on a high-profile project-"
"You weren't even in your office," Jewel sharp voice interrupted him. "I went there and your secretary said you were out the whole day."
There was a moment of silence.
"Are you cheating on me?"
Saint was speechless upon hearing her accusation. He had two choices; he could admit the truth and be free or deny it, get his act together and break up with Carol before Jewel finds out the truth. But he chose himself. He wanted to be happy.
"I'm seeing someone else," he finally admitted.
"We haven't broken up," there was bitterness in Jewel's voice. "We were fine weeks ago. Did I miss something?"
"It just happened," Saint replied. "I'm sorry-"
Before he could even finish his sentence, a hard slap landed on his face.
He had yet to recover when a couple of slaps followed.
He grabbed the hands of Jewel, trying to stop her, but she was hysterical. She got away and started throwing things at him.
Saint had never seen her like that and, for a moment, he felt a bit of remorse for hurting her. She loved him, there was no doubt on it.
Exhausted, Jewel sat on the floor, her back resting on the wall while sobbing like a child.
Saint took a deep breath and decided to comfort her, but eventually changed his mind.
"I'm leaving," he said before realizing it was his place. He prepared himself for another possible outburst from Jewel. "I mean, please leave. I have work tomorrow."
In a flash of anger, Jewel attacked him, banging her fists on his chest.
"Stop it!" Saint could not handle it anymore and tried to pull himself away from her. She grabbed him and tore his shirt, exposing his toned body.
"Get out!" Saint finally lost his temper.
But Jewel did not even flinch, "No!"
"I'm calling the police," he threatened, pulling his mobile phone out of his pocket.
Desperate, Jewel hugged him and started crying again. Before Saint could avoid her, she leaned on for a kiss.
He sighed. Thinking that it would pacify her and she would eventually understand and accept his decision, he returned her kiss, which he regretted afterwards as the kiss led them to his bed.
"One last time," Saint thought while removing his remaining clothes, trying hard not to feel guilty. "I just want to say goodbye."
Saint left before Jewel could even wake up. He felt sorry for her even more after what happened last night.
He had a great time but it did not change anything. He still wanted to break up with her.
He just left a note on the bedside table and left to go to work. If she does not leave the penthouse, he is going to stay with his parents. He also gave a clear instruction to his staff not to let Jewel inside his office premises.
Again, he felt guilty.
She was too devoted to him to be treated that way.
But what can he do? He fell in love with someone else. It was like imprinting. Like he didn't have a choice when he was born with wolf blood.
She will understand someday.
"Carol!"
Monsanto was excited to see Carol going out of their house. It was Saturday and he knew she was free that day. They haven't seen each other since her first day at work and Monsanto was busy looking for a part-time job. He wanted to invite her for a coffee to catch up.
"Hey, Santo," Carol smiled upon seeing him crossing the street. "Long time no see. What's up?"
He shrugged before smiling, "Same boring life. What's new?"
"Same as you."
"Do you want to grab a cup of coffee?" he finally asked. "My treat."
Carol hesitated before answering, "Actually, someone's picking me up."
Before Monsanto could even say anything, a luxury car stopped in front of them.
Saint came out, looking elegant and polish as ever. He was surprised to see a Monsanto who, despite wearing second-hand clothes and looking dishevelled, was extremely attractive.
"Who is he?" Saint asked.
"Hi, love," Carol approached him and smiled, "This is Monsanto, my best friend."
Saint seemed unconvinced and stared at Monsanto suspiciously.
"What are you staring at?" Monsanto was obviously offended. "Who are you anyway?"
"I'm Saint, Carol's boyfriend," he replied before turning to Carol, "You never mentioned him to me."
"He's just a friend. I didn't think it would be a big deal," Carol explained. "Come on, let's go."
Saint glanced over Monsanto one more time, "I don't want him hanging around you."
"Excuse me?" Monsanto couldn't believe what he heard. He had been Carol's best friend since childhood, while this guy just came in the picture recently and thought that he had the right to dictate Carol.
"Saint, come on," Carol tried to pacify him to Monsanto's disappointment. She should be comforting him instead. Fear swept over him. He didn't want to lose Carol.
"Carol, can I have a word with you before you leave?" Monsanto pleaded.
"We'll talk later," Carol replied, but Monsanto insisted.
"Please."
Saint finally snapped, "Back off, dude! Didn't you hear? She doesn't want to talk with you."
Carol screamed as Monsanto's fist landed on Saint's face.
Saint immediately recovered and got up, returning Monsanto's punch.
"Hey, stop it!" Carol tried to intervene. "Stop this, right now!"
It took a while for the brawl to cease. With the help of random passers, they were able to separate Monsanto and Saint and prevent them from beating each other further.
"Santo," Carol worriedly went to her best friend upon seeing him with a bleeding nose, swollen eyes and bruises on the face, lying on the sidewalk. Saint seemed fine though his nose and lips were bleeding too. He was able to get up immediately and brush off the dirt on his shirt and pants.
Monsanto just smiled, "You really want to date a guy like that? He seemed to care more about his Gucci shirt than you."
Carol suddenly remembered Saint and awkwardly went to him, "Are you okay?"
Saint let a loud sigh, "I'm fine, I guess."
"Look, you have to believe me," Carol said. "There's nothing going on between me and Monsanto."
"I'll wait in the car," Saint replied. "Just follow when you have already decided who between us matters to you."
"Saint, come on-"
"I'm sorry. But I won't be sharing my girlfriend with some guy pretending to be her friend when, obviously, he's yearning for more."
"What are you talking about?" Carol asked, totally confused, but Saint didn't answer and left.
Carol was about to follow Saint when she heard Monsanto following behind her.
"Carol, please, I just want to tell you something."
"Santo, not now. My boyfriend's mad at me-"
"I love you!"
