“I thought fire would end him, but it only burned what was left of us.”

The smell of smoke clung to my hair even after I woke.

A nurse was adjusting my IV line when I opened my eyes, the white ceiling above me a blur of light and pain.

For a second, I thought the fire had followed me here, that I was still trapped in that collapsing hallway with Christian’s voice echoing somewhere in the dark.
