The thought circled through my mind like a trapped bird, beating against the walls of my skull, desperate for escape. But my body refused to obey. I was frozen there, sprawled across his lap, my heart pounding so hard I could feel it in my throat, my fingers curled against his chest where they had landed to brace myself.
