The days that followed were uncomfortably quiet. The school hallways buzzed with the usual chatter, but for me, everything felt muted. I glanced at Will’s empty desk again and again, each time hoping to see him slouched in his chair, pretending not to pay attention. But the chair stayed empty.

Will hadn’t shown up for two whole days.
