Gabriel tightened his fist around the device, feeling a surge of determination. He was going to figure out the truth, no matter what it took. But how could he possibly fight off the Nexus in a country where they had a strong hold. He was just a stranger in this country regardless of the gibberish that woman had told him about his birth. He felt his invitation to Germany had only opened him up to the real trap. He was not safe here, he concluded.
They made their way back up the stairs. As they emerged into the dim lights of the museum, Gabriel didn’t find anyone around. There had been footsteps before now, but no soul in sight now. He looked around, he realized that he was alone. The woman was nowhere to be seen. She had vanished into thin air. Gabriel became scared than ever.
"Wait, hello!" Gabriel called out, but there was no response. It was the dead of the night. Where could he go from here? He hadn’t come in his car as the woman as instructed.
He was left standing alone outside the museum, the memory stick clutched in his hand. He knew that his journey was far from over.
With a deep breath, Gabriel trudged by. His phone rang. It was a call from an unknown number.
“You have to run now, Gabe.” It was Ethan’s voice again.
“Ethan? Is that really you?” He asked out of curiosity.
“Yes, it’s me, Gabe.” Ethan confirmed. You must leave the museum now. It’s too dangerous.”
Excited that he got a response to his question from Ethan. It was the first time he was having a real call with his friend. He checked the phone again to be sure. The call was different from others he had been receiving from him. It was a real call this time. No voice mails. No timestamp.
“We need to talk, buddy.” Gabriel continued, excited to be having a real-time conversation with his friend. “I’ve heard strange things since I got to Berlin. We need to catch up.”
“We will catch up soon, buddy,” Ethan affirmed. “But you must leave that spot immediately. The woman you've been hanging around with works for the Nexus. You need to stop talking to her!" He warned.
Gabriel took the phone off his ear for a brief to look round. He found nobody. Nobody was coming for him. He wondered why Ethan was scared for him. For a brief, he was taken aback by Ethan's revelation about the mystery woman. Although she had never attempted to hurt him in any way since he arrived in Berlin. As much as it didn't matter, there was something sinister about the woman. She had told him about the Nexus. She had warned him against their intent to hunt him down. There was a lot she was going to tell him down in the basement at the museum before they suspected an intruder. It didn't just make sense that the woman who had revealed much to him was part of the Nexus that intended to erase his existence. Or could she be warning him against herself? Gabriel's mind swirled with questions and anxiety. The woman had warned him that "there was no Ethan" but here was Ethan warning him against the woman. He was confused. He didn't know who to trust now. He replaced the phone back on his ear, but realized Ethan was off the call now. As he walked away from the museum, he felt a sense of unease. Was he being watched? He glanced around but saw nothing out of the ordinary.
But then, he noticed a figure watching him from across the street. It was a woman, dressed in a long coat. She seemed familiar, but Gabriel couldn't quite place her.
The woman smiled, and Gabriel felt a shiver run down his spine. He knew that he had to get out of there, fast.
He quickened his pace, but the woman kept pace with him, her eyes fixed on him. Gabriel knew that he had to lose her, but how?
He spotted a taxicab approaching and hailed it, hopping in just as the woman reached out to grab him.
As the taxi sped away, Gabriel felt a mix of relief and confusion. He dripped with sweat. Who was the woman, and why was she chasing him? He glanced back, but she had vanished into the night.
The taxi driver, a gruff-looking man with a thick accent, asked, "Where to, mate?"
Gabriel was reluctant, unsure of his next move. "Just drive around for a bit," he said. "I need to think."
The driver nodded and continued driving. Gabriel's mind was whirling with questions. What was the Kentaur Programme? Was the Nexus tailing him now? That was super-fast if what he experienced back there at the museum was the Nexus hunting him already. And who was the woman who seemed to know so much about it?
As he pondered, the taxi driver suddenly spoke up. "You're in danger, Gabriel."
Gabriel's head sprang towards the driver. "How do you know my name?"
The driver smiled, revealing a hint of familiarity. "I've been watching you, friend.”
Friend? Why would a stranger call him “friend”? He peered at the rear-view mirror to have a proper look at the driver’s face. Alas, it was Ethan, his friend supposed to be dead.
