Joy stands at the foot of my bed. Her face is grave.

"The medication isn't working anymore." She sets down her clipboard. "Your body is rejecting everything we're giving you. The herbal treatments, the potions, even basic pain management. We've reached a dangerous plateau."

Alexander tenses beside me. His hand grips mine tighter.
