Chapter 5: For Love Sake

The coffee shop owner fired a warning shot in the air which rang with a deafening sound. "Take your fight somewhere else!" he yelled, positioning his shotgun at them.

"What do you say, punk?" Jude snorted. "Let's take this fight outside and fight like men!"

Jake chuckled. "You will get your ass kicked!"

As they both walked outside, they walked into the alley. Before Jake could utter another word, someone from behind grabbed him, smashing his head against the brick wall, he tossed him across the dumpster.

"Dad, what the hell are you doing?" Jude asked, expressing disappointment. "I told you I don't need any help." His brows furrows. He never expected his father to help him in kicking Jake's ass.

"I have been watching you," Mike said. "You are taking too long in kicking his ass so I interfered."

"That's not a fair fight," Jude argued.

"Suit yourself," his father glared at him. Pointing at Jake's unconscious body lying next to the dumpster, "We should take him and finish the job before the police get here." There's no doubt that the coffee shop owner has called the cops.

In as much as the werewolves want to fit in living amongst the humans, they must play by their rules. This is why they still live in secret.

French Quarters

The bell jiggled as the wooden door creaked open. Helen walked into a witch's store feeling fear at the back of her hair. She never liked the witches and she's the type that hated magic even though the witches helped to break the curse of the moon making it possible for her kind to control their form.

The voodoo dolls hanging around triggered more fear in her.

Before she could say, "Anyone here?" she was startled by a harsh voice that yelled at her, "What are you doing here?"

She flicked around. On seeing Elena, she pants slowly to catch her breath. "You scared the scrap out of me," she mutters. She puts up her finger in the air, saying, "Don't you make a sound when you move?"

"Says a wolf who can stalk her prey without the prey knowing." Her response was harsh. She continued to glare at her wondering what brought her to the French Quarters, a place the witches dwell in the fullness of their powers.

Helen dismissed the topic and moved straight to why she was there. "I have been trying to reach Jake but I..."

"So?" She interrupted without letting her finish. All she feels for her is hate. 'Does she even know she's now my enemy for accepting to be Jake's mate?' She thought to herself as her scowl at Helen became evident.

"I am sorry to bother you," Helen sighed softly. "I was told he met you last and I can't catch up with his scent."

"What are you talking about?" Elena blurted. "I left him at the coffee shop downtown."

"Look, Elena, I know you hate me for being in the picture," she politely said, trying to win her over before tendering her request. She sighed and continued in a refined voice, "But know this, I am not your enemy. Jude is in town and I fear he and his father must have done something stupid to Jake."

"That still can't explain why you are here!" Elena lashed out. She slid her tongue across her teeth and tightened her hands into fists on her thighs.

"Since I can't pick up Jake's scent, do you mind doing a locator spell?"

"Go away!" Elena lashed out, showing a strong resentment in her. "I won't help."

She turned to walk out on Helen but was held back. Helen's grip on her was firm and almost hurting. "Don't transfer your hate for me to your best friend."

Rage fell on Elena like a morning dew, trying to get the best of her. "How dare you grip my arm?!" Her yelling came with a sonic wave, flinging Helen across the shelf.

Helen sprang up to her feet and steeled her failing nerves. Her eyes glowed with ire, "I won't leave until you do the spell," she gnawed.

"Then, get ready to meet your demise!"

Elena suspended herself in the air, she flew at the speed of lightning and stood behind Helen. Before Helen could flick around, Elena flicked her wrist, sending her flying across the shelves.

The wooden stairs creaked under Mike's feet as he descended to the basement. "How is it going, son?"

They had taken Jake and brought him to their old family cabin in the woods. Jude wanted to end Jake's life but his father had another idea before getting to that. 'Torture him, first,' he told Jude. 'Taking his life without torture will make it a painless death'.

Jude cast a side glance at his father, saying, "I am enjoying this." His smile was sly and devilish. In his hand was a pocket dagger which he drove into Jake's lower abdomen.

Too bad for Jake, he isn't experiencing accelerated healing like the werewolf would. He has been drug with a substance known as wolfsbane which is toxic to the werewolves. All he did was to scream in excruciating pain.

His hands were bound to a wooden chair with ropes soaked in wolfsbane. His legs were also tied to the leg of the wooden chair with a similar rope.

In his full strength, he would have ripped off the rope and devoured his attacker. He's too weak for that now. The wolfsbane in his systems rendered him weak and vulnerable.

Mike makes his way to the table sitting at the center of the basement. He picked up a leather glove and wore it to avoid close contact with Wolfsbane. He dip a cup into a bowl containing water mixed with wolfsbane.

"Time to have another drink," he said.

"Why are you doing this," Jake squeezes out slowly.

"You should have declined Alpha Cage's offer," Mike glared at him. "Now you have to die for love." He quickly grabbed Jake's cheek and forcefully opened his mouth emptying the liquid into his mouth.

Jude laughs out loud like a lunatic, enjoying every bit of the torture.

The wolfsbane is the reason Helen can't pick Jake's scent.

French Quarters

Helen and Elena have kept their differences aside after a swift nasty fight. Elena agreed to do the spell.

She rolled her eyes on Helen, "I have found his location," she said.

"Good, let's roll."

As Helen threw a step, Elena dragged her back by the arm. She gazed deep into Helen's eyes. "I didn't do this for you."

"I know, you did it for him," she hissed. "Can we go now?"

"No," Elena frowns. "There's no 'we'".

With just a witchy gaze at Helen, Helen slumps, falling into Elena's sleeping spell.

She leaps across Helen, making her way to the exit and smiling devilishly, "I work alone."

Her smirk was sly. She feels now is the time to save the one she has been crushing on and perhaps win his love.
