Chapter 3. The Pack That Shouldn't Be

Kayden and I continued running through the vast plain behind the towering walls of Witherfield. Our laughter filled the air as the wind whipped through our hair. Playfully, Kayden teased me, "You can't catch up, baby sister!"

It's all so new to me, this life I've been thrown into. It's fast-paced. Crazy. Funny. The way I fought for a space in Beckmore, and the way I was readily accepted in my new home, it all happened so quickly.

I fix my eyes on Kayden as I trail behind him. Even if I were to outrun him, my thoughts weigh heavy in my mind, making it hard for my feet to keep up with the pace.

Finally, Kayden, feeling breathless, comes to a stop and I follow suit, gasping for air. We've reached the outskirts of town on our own legs, where a small drainage path leads to a nearby filling station with a car. Kayden walks towards it and I follow.

"Kayden, where are we going?" I ask, curiosity lacing my voice.

"This is where adventures begin, Lauren. But remember the rules I told you. Stay behind me at all times, don't talk to anyone, don't stare, and don't flinch."

It all sounds a bit confusing, and I blink despondently. "If it's too dangerous, why are you going, Kayden?" I ask, concern coloring my words.

"You will see, Lauren. Sometimes, we have to take risks to find something extraordinary," Kayden answers, his eyes searching mine.

"What are you looking for?" I ask, my voice filled with genuine curiosity. "You have everything."

"I have everything? What do I have? An alpha as a father? Just that?" Kayden says, frustration seeping into his words.

I was stunned, taken aback by his response. To me, having an alpha as a father is everything. It's more than enough, it's something to be proud of.

In the car, the engine hums to life and we embark on a silent journey through the streets. I stole a few gazes, ones that are meant to cement the idea that Kayden is my brother, not my mate or someone I could have a crush on.

"He could be my mate," I whisper to myself. "Hush! That's incest!!!" I berated myself, shaking off the thought.

Fifteen minutes passed, and the once-familiar surroundings began to blur as Kayden abruptly turned onto rough, unfamiliar roads. Each twist and turn drew us deeper into the heart of a dense forest, where tall trees loom high above us, obscuring the sky.

As we venture further, distant flickers of light pierced through the darkness, accompanied by the faint echoes of laughter, chatter, and music.

"What is this place, a party? Kayden?" I called out, trying to make sense of it all.

A mysterious smile adorned Kayden's face as he turned to meet my gaze. "A pack, but crazier. Free for all. Ruled by one, Dixis."

"A pack? What about Witherfield?" I ask, my confusion growing. But Kayden ignored my question. I had followed him because I wyant to be with him, to get to know him. So, I push aside all doubts and fears, trusting that he knows what he's doing.

The car continued its path, drawing us closer to the source of light and merriment. As the forest grows thinner, it revealed an expansive clearing ahead.

The car rolled to a slow stop, and as I step out onto the unfamiliar ground, my heart raced with anticipation and the promise of discovery.

My eyes surveyed the area, taking in the scene before me. Yet, my question lingers in the air, waiting to be answered: "What are we doing in another pack?"

I stood by the car, my heart pounding in anticipation. I could feel the energy shift in the air as Kayden opened the door and stepped out beside me.

The scene before us was unlike anything I could have imagined. A sea of sleek cars, bikes, horses on a stake, and helicopters stretches out before me.

Tents dotted the landscape, while a large fire crackles in the distance, casting flickering shadows on the faces of the people gathered around it. Shouts and laughter fill the air, creating a cacophony of excitement and adventure.

As we made our way deeper into the crowd, I held onto Kayden's hand tightly, seeking comfort amidst the overwhelming atmosphere.

His earlier warning echoed in my mind, urging me not to stare, especially at the tent. But now it felt like a lifeline, a boundary that separated me from danger. "I shouldn't talk to anyone, I shouldn't let go of his hand, I shouldn't even look..."

As we walked past the various tents, an eerie moaning sound filled the air, piquing my curiosity. I couldn't resist the temptation, so I peered into one of the nearby tents, my breath catching in my throat.

And there they were, staring back at me with intense green eyes - werewolves. My eyes widened in shock and I quickly turned to Kayden, unable to confess my mistake.

"It's a different pack," he explained cautiously, his tone filled with caution. "Something rougher, bigger, and more complicated."

My curiosity now mingled with growing concern, I couldn't help but ask, "But why are you here then? You have your own home. A pack you'll inherit. Why are you a part of this... this thing?" My voice trembled with uncertainty and fear.

Before Kayden could respond, a feminine voice called out his name. A woman dressed in revealing attire, just her lingerie, approached and kissed Kayden passionately, their tongues intertwining. I stared at her, wondering if this was how the girls of the pack were expected to dress.

Confusion flooded my mind as questions started to arise. "Is she Kayden's girlfriend?" I muttered under my breath.

The woman, after the kiss, then turned to Kayden and asked, "Who's she?" She gestured towards me, and I couldn't help but feel out of place, like an intruder in this strange world.

Kayden began to respond, but before he could finish, another woman hugged him tightly, pulling him away from me. I watched in disbelief as he left my side without explanation. I took a deep breath, trying to remind him that I was still there, still his sister.

But it was clear that the bond we shared was far beyond that of siblings. I was torn between love and lust for Kayden, a feeling that I struggled to understand and accept.

As another woman walked past, she handed Kayden a bottle and he drank from it, followed by them sharing the liquid in a long, intoxicating kiss. The sound of their lips smacking together grated on my nerves, irritating me to no end.

I reached out to grab Kayden's hand, desperate to hold onto him in the chaos that surrounded us. I called out his name, my voice drowned out by the commotion. But my pleas went unanswered. Kayden was slipping away from me.

Just as a wave of hopelessness washed over me, a deep voice broke through the noise from behind. "Hello, mate," it said, laced with amusement and an underlying power.

I turned around, tears blurring my vision, to face the source of the voice. And there, standing before me, was the same green-eyed creature I had glimpsed in the tent. I had broken a rule, and I knew deep down that there would be consequences.
