CHAPTER FOUR

David and Jennifer stood outside the grand mansion, the sound of classical music and gentle chatter drifting through the air. David's grip on Jennifer's hand tightened as he led her to the entrance.

"Remember, just be yourself," David whispered, his eyes scanning the surroundings.

Jennifer nodded, her heart racing. She had never been to a place like this before. The mansion was breathtaking, with crystal chandeliers and expensive artwork adorning the walls.

Inside, David's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Loris, greeted them warmly. Jennifer was taken aback by their kindness and genuine smiles.

"Welcome, Jennifer," Mrs. Loris said, embracing her warmly. "We're so glad you could join us."

David's father, a tall, imposing figure, shook Jennifer's hand firmly. "We're delighted to meet you, young lady."

As they sat down for dinner, Jennifer felt a sense of unease. She knew she was here to pretend to be David's girlfriend, but she couldn't help feeling like she didn't belong.

The conversation flowed easily, with David's parents asking her questions about her interests and hobbies. Jennifer found herself opening up, sharing stories about her love of reading and her dreams.

David watched her with a mixture of amusement and admiration. He hadn't expected Jennifer to fit in so seamlessly.

As the evening drew to a close, David's parents smiled at each other, seemingly pleased with what they saw.

"David, we're glad you've found someone like Jennifer," Mrs. Loris said, her eyes shining with warmth. "She's lovely."

David's grip on Jennifer's hand tightened, a subtle signal for her to play along. "I know, right?" he said, smiling at Jennifer. "I'm a lucky man."

Jennifer's heart skipped a beat as David's eyes met hers. For a moment, she forgot this was all just an act.

As they left the mansion, Jennifer turned to David. "That wasn't so bad," she said, her voice barely above a whisper.

David chuckled. "You're a natural."

Jennifer smiled, feeling a sense of relief. Maybe this arrangement wouldn't be so bad after allAs they walked back to the car, Jennifer couldn't help but feel a sense of relief wash over her. The meeting with David's parents had gone better than she expected. They seemed kind and genuinely interested in getting to know her.

"You're smiling," David said, noticing the change in her expression. "Does that mean you're enjoying this fake relationship thing?"

Jennifer's smile faltered for a moment before she replied, "It's not so bad, I guess. Your parents are nice."

David chuckled. "They can be when they want to be. But don't worry, they're not always this pleasant."

Jennifer raised an eyebrow. "Oh? What are they like when they're not being pleasant?"

David's grin grew wider. "Let's just say they're very... persistent when it comes to getting what they want."

Jennifer's eyes widened in understanding. "You mean, like, with you getting married?"

David nodded. "Exactly. They've been on my case about settling down for years. But I think tonight went well. They seemed to really like you."

Jennifer felt a flutter in her chest at the thought. "I'm glad I could help."

As they reached the car, David opened the door for Jennifer and she slid inside. Once he was seated beside her, he turned to her and said, "You know, you're really good at this. I think we make a pretty convincing couple."

Jennifer laughed. "Thanks, I think. But don't get too comfortable, I'm still getting paid to do this."

David's eyes sparkled with amusement. "Oh, I'm very aware of that. But still, you're a natural."

The drive back to David's apartment was quiet, with Jennifer lost in thought. She couldn't help but wonder what the future held for her and David, even if it was just a fake relationship.

When they arrived, David walked her to the door and said, "Thanks again for tonight. You were great."

Jennifer smiled. "No problem. Thanks for having me."

As she entered the apartment, Jennifer couldn't shake off the feeling that this arrangement was going to be more complicated than she thought. And not just because of David's parents.

The next morning, Jennifer woke up to the sound of David moving around in the kitchen. She got out of bed and joined him, finding him making breakfast.

"Morning," he said, looking up from the stove. "Sleep well?"

Jennifer nodded, taking a seat at the counter. "Yeah, thanks. What's cooking?"

David smiled. "Just some scrambled eggs and toast. Nothing too fancy."

Jennifer's eyes lit up. "Sounds perfect."

As they ate breakfast together, Jennifer couldn't help but feel a sense of domesticity wash over her. It was a strange feeling, one she wasn't sure she was comfortable with.

But as she looked at David, she saw something in his eyes that made her heart skip a beat. Maybe, just maybe, this arrangement wouldn't be so bad after all.As they finished breakfast, David glanced at his watch. "I have a meeting in an hour. I'll be working from home today, but I need to get going soon."

Jennifer nodded, feeling a sense of relief that she wouldn't be alone in the apartment all day. "I'll just get ready for the day, then," she said, heading towards the bedroom.

As she showered and dressed, Jennifer couldn't help but think about the previous night's dinner with David's parents. She had been nervous, but they had seemed kind and welcoming. She wondered what David's childhood had been like, growing up with parents who were so invested in his life.

When she emerged from the bedroom, David was on the phone, pacing back and forth in the living room. Jennifer sat down on the couch, watching him with interest. He seemed so confident and in control, even when he was on the phone.

After a few minutes, David ended the call and turned to Jennifer. "Sorry about that," he said. "Work stuff. I'm going to head out soon, but I wanted to talk to you about something first."

Jennifer's curiosity was piqued. "What is it?" she asked, leaning forward slightly.
