CHAPTER 28 The Aftermath

The morning sun poured through Angela's bedroom window, filling the room with a soft, golden light. It felt like a new beginning, yet the air was thick with unspoken words and unresolved emotions. She had spent a sleepless night replaying everything that had happened with Richard, and while she understood that Edmund's actions had been necessary, a nagging doubt lingered in her mind.

As she rose from bed, her phone buzzed on the nightstand, drawing her attention. She reached for it, noticing an email notification from her college. With a quick tap, she opened it, her heart racing.

  "Dear Angela Iris,

We hope this message finds you well. We regret to inform you that due to unforeseen circumstances, the start of the semester has been postponed for two weeks. We appreciate your understanding and look forward to welcoming you back soon."

Angela blinked, her heart sinking at the news. The anticipation of starting college had kept her mind occupied, a fresh chapter that seemed to promise a life beyond the turmoil of the last few weeks. Now, that hope felt like it was slipping away, leaving her with an unsettling sense of stagnation.

"Angela?" Edmund's voice floated through the house, grounding her in the moment.

"In here!" she called back, taking a deep breath to steady herself. She needed to push aside her concerns about college and focus on the man who had risked everything to keep her safe.

Edmund entered, his presence commanding as always, yet his eyes held a softness that she cherished. "How are you feeling this morning?" he asked, leaning against the doorframe.

"Better, I think," she replied, forcing a smile. "Just got some news from school. They postponed classes for two weeks."

Edmund's brow furrowed slightly. "Is that a good or bad thing?"

"Honestly? I'm not sure. I was looking forward to starting," she confessed, her voice wavering. "But I guess it gives me more time to process everything."

Edmund stepped further into the room, his expression shifting to one of concern. "Processing is important, Angela. I know everything has been overwhelming. You can talk to me about anything about Richard, about us, or whatever you're feeling."

Angela's heart raced at the open invitation, yet uncertainty clung to her like a heavy cloak. "What if I'm not ready to talk about it?" she asked softly.

"Then we'll sit in silence," he said, his tone gentle but firm. "But I don't want you to feel like you have to hide anything from me."

His words made her feel seen and understood, yet the weight of their situation pressed heavily on her chest. She took a step closer, feeling the warmth radiate from him. "It's just everything feels so complicated now. I never imagined I'd be involved in something like this."

"You weren't involved in anything," Edmund replied, his voice steady. "You were innocent in all of this. Richard manipulated the situation to his advantage, but you were never his target."

"I know that," Angela said, frustration creeping into her tone. "But the fact that you had to go to such lengths to protect me, it terrifies me, Edmund."

Edmund's gaze softened, his hand reaching up to cup her cheek. "I would do it all again if it meant keeping you safe. You are everything to me, Angela."

She felt a rush of warmth at his words, yet the underlying fear of their situation lingered. The world outside felt so far away, and here they stood, suspended in a moment that could easily shatter.

"What happens now?" she asked, her voice barely above a whisper.

Edmund's expression shifted to one of contemplation. "Now, we take the time we need. We focus on you, on us. The threats have been neutralized, but there may be lingering fallout. We'll deal with it together."

Together. The word echoed in her mind, sending a thrill down her spine. Despite everything, she wanted to believe in their bond, in the strength they could muster against the world.

"Okay," she replied, finding a spark of determination. "I'm ready to face whatever comes next with you."

Edmund smiled, the corners of his eyes crinkling with warmth. "That's my girl. But first, let's make breakfast. We need to fuel up for whatever the day holds."

As they made their way to the kitchen, Angela felt a glimmer of hope. They were navigating uncharted waters, but she wouldn't be alone. She had Edmund by her side, and together, they could face anything.

The morning sun poured through the kitchen window, casting a warm glow over the breakfast table. Angela sat across from Edmund, who was engrossed in his phone, responding to messages that seemed never-ending. The scent of freshly brewed coffee and crisp bacon filled the air, but the tension lingering from the previous days still clung to her like a shadow.

Julie entered, her bright smile illuminating the room. "Good morning, everyone! Hope you're ready for another beautiful day." She moved around the table, pouring herself a cup of coffee and fixing a plate of food.

"Morning, Mom," Angela replied, forcing a smile despite the tumultuous thoughts swirling in her mind.

"Morning," Edmund muttered, his attention still on his phone.

As they settled in, Julie glanced at Angela, her expression shifting slightly. "So, sweetheart, have you thought about your plans for the next couple of weeks? With school starting postponed, I imagine you might have some free time."

Angela hesitated, her mind racing. She wanted to talk about the recent events, about Richard and the upheaval, but now was not the time. "Not really. I guess I'll just take it easy for a bit."

Julie nodded, seemingly satisfied, but Angela could see the glimmer of concern in her mother's eyes. The atmosphere shifted as Julie placed her coffee cup down with a firm hand.

"I have some news, actually," she said, taking a deep breath. "I just found out that I need to leave for a work tour for two weeks. There's an art exhibition coming up, and I've got to oversee the preparations."

Angela felt her heart sink. "Two weeks? But Mom…"

"I know, honey, but this is important for my career," Julie interrupted gently. "I didn't expect the timing to clash with your classes being postponed."

Edmund finally looked up, his brow furrowing. "A work tour? That's a big commitment, Julie. Are you sure you want to go now?"

"I have to," she replied, her tone firm. "I can't pass up this opportunity."

Angela's thoughts raced. The idea of being alone in the house, especially with everything that had happened, made her anxious. "What will I do while you're gone?"

Julie reached across the table, squeezing Angela's hand. "I'm sure you'll be fine. You've got Edmund here to keep you company."

Edmund's expression shifted to one of contemplation. "Actually, I have to leave for a business trip as well. I had planned it for next week, but it seems I'll be leaving sooner than I thought."

Angela's heart raced. "What? You're both leaving?"

"Yes, but I have an idea," Edmund interjected, leaning forward with a glint of excitement in his eyes. "Angela, why don't you join me on the trip? You'll be my intern, and it'll give you a chance to learn about the business side of things. Plus, it will keep you occupied while your mother is away."

Julie looked at Edmund with surprise but quickly softened. "That's actually a great thought. Angela could gain some real-world experience, and it's not like she'll be alone. You'll have Edmund with you."

Angela felt a mix of emotions. The prospect of traveling with Edmund thrilled her, but the idea of being apart from her mother was unsettling. "Are you sure that's okay? I don't want to be a burden."

"Absolutely," Edmund assured her, his voice warm. "You'll be learning, and I promise to make it fun. Just think of it as an adventure."

Angela glanced between her mother and Edmund, the weight of the decision pressing down on her. Finally, she nodded, the excitement bubbling within her. "Okay, I'll do it."

"Great! I'll make all the arrangements," Edmund said, his eyes sparkling with enthusiasm. "Now, let's finish breakfast before it gets cold."

As they resumed their meal, the tension began to lift, replaced by a sense of anticipation for the adventure that lay ahead.

After breakfast, Julie left for her art gallery, leaving Angela and Edmund alone in the house. The air was charged with unspoken words and unacknowledged desires. Edmund glanced at Angela, his expression unreadable.

"Ready for some shopping?" he asked, breaking the silence.

"Shopping? Now?" Angela replied, surprise evident in her voice.

"Yes! We need to get you some new clothes for the trip. Plus, I want to make sure you're well-equipped for the beach. It's going to be a warm week," he said, his tone teasing.

Angela's heart raced at the thought of shopping with him. The idea felt thrilling and nerve-wracking, but she couldn't deny the excitement bubbling inside her. "Alright, let's do it."

The mall buzzed with energy, filled with shoppers eager to snag the latest trends. As they entered a chic boutique, Angela felt a thrill rush through her. The shop was adorned with colorful displays, the scent of fresh fabric and the chatter of excited customers filling the air.

Edmund led her through the racks, his eyes scanning the selections with keen interest. "Let's find you something that really stands out."

Angela chuckled, a mix of embarrassment and delight. "You don't have to spoil me, you know."

"I want to," he replied, his voice low and steady. "You deserve it. Plus, it'll be fun to pick out some outfits together."

They began browsing through clothes, and Edmund picked out a few sundresses that made Angela's cheeks flush with warmth. Each piece he selected seemed to enhance her figure, showcasing her youthful curves.

"What do you think of this one?" Edmund asked, holding up a fitted red dress.

"It's beautiful," Angela replied, biting her lip. "But I don't think I could pull it off."

Edmund stepped closer, his voice a sultry whisper. "You absolutely could. It would look incredible on you."

Angela felt her heart race as she took the dress from him. "Okay, I'll try it on."

As she headed toward the changing room, she felt a rush of nerves mixed with excitement. She could feel Edmund's eyes on her, his presence a powerful force behind her. Once inside the cubicle, she slipped out of her clothes and put on the dress. The fabric hugged her body perfectly, making her feel confident and a bit daring.

When she stepped out to show Edmund, his gaze darkened with appreciation. "Wow! Just wow! This dress is made for you, baby."

Angela felt a surge of pride, twirling to see the dress flare out. "You really think so?"

"Absolutely. You look stunning," he replied, stepping closer, the air thick with tension.

"Thank you," she said shyly, a blush creeping onto her cheeks.

"Now, let's find something a little more daring," he said, his tone teasing yet serious.
