CHAPTER 94 Crossroads of Deception

The tension in the room was suffocating, the silence heavy with unspoken truths and mounting distrust. Angela stood frozen, her mother's cryptic warning still ringing in her ears. Elena's steady gaze remained fixed on her, searching for a crack in Angela's resolve. The words from Julie and Elena had left Angela spiraling, caught in a web she no longer felt capable of untangling. Stay away from Michael. The line had gone dead, leaving her questions unanswered and her heart pounding. Across from her, Elena's gaze was sharp, unwavering.

Elena broke the silence, her voice firm but laced with a rare tenderness. "Angela, I'm telling you this because I care. You have to believe me. Whatever your mother told you, Michael isn't here to help. He's not your ally. I told you, Angela. Michael is working against your mother. He's not just a business associate, he's an operative, maybe even an informant. Whatever Julie's been up to, Michael is pulling the strings to expose her. And he's using you to do it."

Angela crossed her arms, her defenses rising. "And you are?" she snapped, though her voice betrayed a hint of doubt. "You've been lying to me since the moment we met. Don't stand there and pretend you're some savior."

Elena flinched but held her ground. "You're right," she admitted, her tone softening. "I haven't been honest with you, and I'm sorry. But everything I've done was to protect you."

Angela laughed bitterly, shaking her head. "Protect me? From what? From Edmund? From my own mother? Do you even hear yourself?"

Elena stepped closer, her voice lowering. "Yes, Angela. From them. From this entire life you've been dragged into without a choice. Do you think your mother told you the full truth about your adoption? About why she's so close to Michael? Or do you think Edmund's obsession with you is normal?" She hesitated, her brows furrowing. "Edmund…" She exhaled deeply. "I don't have all the details, but there's something off about him, Angela. I've seen the way he manipulates you, how he always seems to be in the right place at the right time. He's not just some innocent bystander."

Angela's breath caught, her chest tightening. She wanted to fight back, to scream that Elena was wrong, but the seeds of doubt had already taken root. The connection she'd shared with Edmund felt too real, too raw to be a fabrication. And yet, doubt seeped in like poison.

"I need proof," Angela said, standing abruptly. "I can't just take your word for this, Elena. If Michael and Edmund are hiding something, I need to see it for myself."

Elena nodded, her expression resolute. "Then we'll get it. Together."

"Leave," Angela said finally, her voice trembling. "I need time. I need space to think."

Elena hesitated, pain flickering across her face. "Angela, if you push me away now, you might not get another chance. I've been digging into your family's secrets for months. I know things that could ruin you, but I'm here because I care about you. Please, don't shut me out."

"Go," Angela whispered, her back turned. She didn't trust herself to meet Elena's eyes.

After a long pause, she heard the sound of retreating footsteps and the soft click of the door closing. Alone now, Angela collapsed onto the couch, her head in her hands. The weight of the past few days pressed down on her, suffocating and inescapable. Every piece of her life felt tainted, twisted by lies and betrayals.

Her phone buzzed in her pocket, and she fumbled to answer it.

"Angela," Julie's voice came through, strained but steady. "Are you alone?"

"Yes," Angela whispered, glancing around. "What's going on? Why did you warn me about Michael?"

There was a pause, and Angela could hear the faint hum of background noise on Julie's end.

"Because he's been working against me," Julie admitted. "For years, I thought he was loyal, but I've uncovered enough to know the truth. He's using our connections, our resources, to dismantle everything I've built. And now, he's targeting you."

Angela's stomach churned. "Why me? What does he want from me?"

"Leverage," Julie said darkly. "You're the key to everything, Angela. Your involvement with Edmund, your proximity to me, it's all part of his plan. He'll use you to bring me down."

Angela's breath hitched. "You're saying Edmund's involved too?"

Another pause, this one longer, heavier.

"I don't know," Julie admitted finally. "But you can't trust him. Not completely. He's too close to Michael. Too…" She trailed off, her voice trembling slightly. "Just be careful, Angela. Promise me."

Angela's throat tightened. "I don't even know who to trust anymore."

"Trust yourself," Julie said firmly. "Trust your instincts. They'll guide you better than anyone else."

The line clicked, leaving Angela in the deafening silence of the night. She lowered the phone, her hands trembling.

  "Angela."

The voice behind her made her jump. She spun around to find Edmund standing a few feet away, his expression shadowed by the dim light.

"You've been avoiding me," he said quietly, his gaze searching hers. "What's going on?"

Angela's mind raced, torn between confrontation and retreat. She straightened her spine, meeting his gaze head-on.

"You tell me," she said, her voice sharper than she intended. "What's your connection to Michael?"

Edmund's eyes flickered with something she couldn't quite place, surprise, perhaps, or guilt. He stepped closer, his movements slow and deliberate.

"Michael and I… We've worked together in the past," he admitted. "But whatever Elena's told you, she's twisting the truth."

Angela's breath caught. "So, it's true. You're connected to him."

"It's complicated," Edmund said, his voice firm but pleading. "Yes, I've had dealings with him. But I've kept you out of it, Angela. Everything I've done has been to protect you."

"Protect me?" Angela's voice rose, anger bubbling to the surface. "How can I believe that when you've been lying to me this whole time?"

Edmund's jaw tightened. "I haven't lied to you. Not about us. What we have is real, Angela. Don't let them take that away from us."

Angela's chest ached at the raw emotion in his voice, but the weight of Elena's warnings and Julie's admission loomed over her.

"Then tell me the truth," she demanded. "All of it. No more half-answers."

Edmund hesitated, his gaze dropping to the ground. When he looked up again, his eyes were filled with a mixture of sorrow and determination.

"Michael approached me months ago," he began. "He knew about Julie's operations, about counterfeit art. He wanted my help to gather evidence against her. At first, I refused, but…"

"But what?" Angela pressed, her heart pounding.

"But then I realized how deep Julie's crimes go," Edmund said, his voice low. "She's not just dealing in forgeries, Angela. There's money laundering, ties to dangerous people. I didn't want you caught in the crossfire."

Angela stared at him, her mind reeling. "So you decided to work with him? To betray her?"

"I did it for you," Edmund said, stepping closer. "To keep you safe."

Angela shook her head, tears welling in her eyes. "You don't get to make that decision for me. You've been lying to me, just like everyone else."

  "Angela…"

"No," she said, backing away. "I need time. I need space to figure this out."

Edmund's expression crumbled, but he nodded. "I'll give you that. But please, don't shut me out completely. Not after everything we've been through."

Angela turned and walked away, her steps unsteady but determined. She didn't stop until she reached her room, locking the door behind her.

As she sank onto the bed, exhaustion and confusion washed over her. The web of lies surrounding her life was tightening, and the truth felt further away than ever.

But one thing was clear, she couldn't trust anyone, not Michael, not Edmund, and perhaps not even Julie.

Angela wiped her eyes, a steely resolve forming in her chest. If she was going to find the truth, she'd have to do it herself. She stood up, her voice trembling but resolute. "Enough. I'm done being pulled in every direction. If neither of you can tell me the full truth, then I'll find it myself."

Julie's eyes widened, panic flickering across her face. "Angela, wait…"

But Angela didn't wait. She grabbed her keys and stormed out, the cool evening air hitting her like a slap. She didn't know where she was going, but she needed to get away from the lies, the betrayal, and the suffocating weight of her family's secrets.

Angela found herself driving aimlessly, the city lights blurring as tears filled her eyes. She pulled over near the beach, the crashing waves offering a strange sense of solace. As she stepped onto the sand, the weight of everything crashed over her, leaving her breathless.

A familiar voice startled her. "Angela."

She turned to see Elena, her expression a mixture of concern and relief. "I thought I'd find you here."

Angela sighed, exhaustion overtaking her. "Why can't you just leave me alone?"

"Because I care about you," Elena said simply. "And because you're in danger. Michael's not the only one with an agenda, Angela. Your mother and Edmund… they're keeping things from you."

Angela sank onto the sand, her head in her hands. "I don't know who to trust anymore."

Elena sat beside her, her voice gentle. "Then trust yourself. Ask the questions they're too afraid to answer. Dig deeper. You deserve the truth, Angela. No matter how painful it might be."

Angela looked at Elena, her heart heavy with doubt and fear. But amidst the chaos, a spark of determination ignited within her. She'd been a pawn for too long. It was time to take control of her own life, to uncover the truths that had been buried for far too long.

The waves crashed against the shore, their rhythm steady and unyielding. Angela took a deep breath, her resolve hardening. She didn't know what she'd find, but one thing was certain: she wouldn't stop until she uncovered every secret, no matter the cost.
