Chapter 23

  Xavier.

I winced in pain as a silver plated wing tore through my arm and I let howled loudly, leaping into the air and pulling the vampire by the wings. I smashed him to the ground and I sent my spears right through his heart.

I looked around me to see several dead bodies. Several dead werewolves lying on the earth that had become red and blood soaked. All I could here was the clashing of swords, snarls, howls and the cries of wounded soldiers.

I locked eyes with a vampire and he snarled at me, dashing towards me and slashing his silver plated wings at me. I roared and bent to the side, quickly using the chance to stun him with a punch before plucking out his hands with my bare hands.

The vampires outnumbered us and I watched my fellow wolfs get killed by the merciless savages. I looked to the right to see Lena fighting off two vampires and using her sword to counter their wings. We had long transformed back into our human form after so much forceful reverting and we were all completed naked.

My eyes darted to a vampire sneaking up behind her and I stabbed the two vampires beside me with my spears before rushing towards her to save her.

I ran with every speed in me and was so close to her when a vampire smashed me in the fave with his wings.

I went tumbling to the ground and I looked up to see the vampire send his wings through her heart.

“Lenaaaaaa!!!” I screamed. The next moment, I was no longer in that battlefield and I met myself in a open space.

I breathed in, trying to recover my breath. The smell of freshly cut grass drifted across the meadow with the clippings scattered over the turf. The branches of the giant oak tree swayed to and fro in the wind, shaking the leaves, so they fell like raindrops, their green color fading and replaced by patches of brown.

The weather seemed perfect as the sun was shining and no clouds were in sight. The meadow was spacious, with a collection of trees and bushes guarding the perimeter.

Before me was a gathering of thick white fogs and I couldn’t see into it or past it no matter how hard I tried. Suddenly I saw someone appear before me and I looked closer to see a lady standing before me. She looked like Lena and the same time looked like…..Valerie. She was smiling at me.

She stretched out her hands towards me and I stretched out my hands to receive hers. As I tried to grab her, she was being drawn backward and I kept moving closer towards her.

“Grab my hands,” she said and I ran forward to grab her hands but she was drawn backward even more. I tried again and she continued being drawn backward.

“Grab my hands?” She screamed and I ran forward, her screams dying out as she got sucked into the fog that became black.

I gasped as I suddenly jacked out of my sleep. I looked around and saw Valerie looking at me.

“Do you always have these nightmares?” She asked and I remained silent for a while before replying with an affirmative nod. I glanced at at the small clock on the wall to check the time. It was 9:38 am in the morning.

I looked back at Valerie and I slowly stretched out my hands to touch her hair. She didn’t protest like I thought she would, and she just kept staring at me.

“Is it about Lena?” Her next question caught me by surprise and I suddenly took my hand away from her hair.

I swallowed and blinked multiple times, “What? Who? How do you know Lena?” I asked and she adjuster her head on her pillow.

“I saw her name on a picture you put in the Mortal Flames novel,” she replied and I nodded.

But still, how does she know how important is she is that I’ll be having nightmares about her.

“What do you know?” I asked.

“I asked Nathan and he told me everything,” she replied and I nodded. Of course, Nathan was the only one who could have possibly told her anything.

“I didn’t know it was possible to have to mates,” she said and adjusted her sleeping position so that she was lying on her back and facing the ceiling.

“It’s rare, but there are instances of getting another mate when the first one dies.” I replied and everything was silent for about a minute before Valerie talked again.

“He also told me about your parents,” She said and I tried to push down the ugly memories that attempted to crawl back up to the surface of my mind.

“I never understood why you hated the sight of vampires so much,” she said and I swallowed nervously.

“I’m sorry,” I said and stretched out my hands to touch her hair again.

She changed her sleeping position again, facing me.

“I’m sorry for what I did,” I continued an she swallowed.

“Just tell me what I should do to make up for it, I’ll do it,” I said and she sat up on the bed, her back resting on the head board.

“You will?” She asked and I nodded in affirmation.

“What about punishing the person that poisoned me.” He words caught me by surprise and I also sat up on the bed.

What? Did she really know who poisoned her and the wolves?

“Of course?” I replied with a nod, “Valerie, do you know who poisoned you?” I asked.

  “Yes.”

I got curious immediately and at the same time ready to seriously deal with whoever it was.

“That morning when I got you a cup of tea, I got one for myself too,” she said and I nodded, anxious for her to get straight to the point and mention the name of the person responsible for poisoning her.

“When I said, I got you the tea, I lied,” she continued and I squinted my eyes, trying to make out where she was heading.

“Someone brought them to me and said you liked taking tea early in the morning and it would boost our relationship,” she continued and I moved backward as I started to realize where she was heading.

“I thought she was finally going to accept me, but she had her own evil intentions!” Valerie yelled.

“It was Gina. Gina poisoned me!”
