Chapter 21

  THE BUTTERFLY

Peter is still baffled by the strange human he saw at the smaller gate of the estate. He knows he should have run after her and questioned her motives for being there but he couldn't bring himself to do it. Lisa Maur is like a butterfly, beautiful to keep but also amazing to watch fly. Yet, he has to do his job. Lisa Maur was having Camilla's scent all over her and Peter knows Camilla has been seeing someone in the estate for some time now. Though they met in secret, he knew.

Meeting Lisa Maur sneaking out of the estate like that was a clear indication that they were friends and she is the one that always visited Camilla. Which meant Camilla is finally starting to remember her friends. She was getting her memory back. This is good news and Peter was sure Ethan will be elated to find out about it.

First, he will have to confirm the news with her.  Using the same gate Lisa Maur stepped out from, he pushes it open and steps in. He then locks it safely behind him to avoid unwanted guests and thieves from infiltrating -even if a thief couldn't infiltrate a packhouse as large as the Peterson's estate.

Satisfied that the gate has been locked properly, he walks confidently into the house, going straight to Camilla's room.

He knocks gently at the door, calling out for her, "Camilla!"

He calls again, the knocks coming sharper than before this time. "Camilla!"

He tries to unlock the door and it is locked from the inside. Maybe she is fast asleep and she didn't hear him calling. He will have to return to try and talk to her after their dinner or during dinner. Peter returned to his room which is on a different floor of the house to wait out for Lisa.

As soon as the sounds of retreating steps stop echoing in the corridor, Camilla opens the small janitor closet in the corridor by the side of her room and releases a breath she has been holding. Immediately she finished talking to Lisa, she had dumped her phone in the room and had locked her door on the outside with the key. She didn't want to stay in her room for she feared what Peter might do.

What if he broke her door and sent her out? Or called the police?

To be on the safe side, she had locked the door and kept herself in the janitor's room where she peeped at all the actions going on across the door, which was her room. She realized that Peter didn't look as angry as Lisa was making him sound. He didn't look angry at all. If she was actually in the room she would have loved to hear what he had to say. She could have come out of course but it would have been awkward stepping out of the janitor's closet with all the chemicals clogging to her body. She smelt like a sanitizer and detergent combined, the poor guy would have choked if she had dared to meet him. She will just wait for dinner before meeting him.

She unlocked her room and was about to step in when Jessie's screeching reached her.

"Where have you been?" She screeched, wringing her nose into the air.

Camilla stared at her from head to toe wondering if something else has come over Jessie. "What do you want?" Camilla is tired. She just went through a major adrenaline moment and she didn't have enough energy left in her to speak to Jessie.

"Why do you smell like you when to swim in detergent? Has that head of yours gone crazy again? Are you even taking your meds!?" Jessie fired, narrowing her eyes at Camilla.

"What I do in my free time is none of your business, Jessie," Camilla responds stepping into her room.

"I am still talking to you!" Jessie snaps.

"Word of advice, go take a swim in detergents too, it will help you a lot, especially your brain. Because sometimes you seem to forget that I am not your child..." Camilla says, before pulling the door close behind her.

"You have declared war Camilla! War!" Jessie continues yelling at the door while Camilla securely locks her door.

Camilla goes to the drawer where Ethan keeps her drugs and takes out the one for headache. She places two in her mouth and goes to her bed to sleep. All the drama she has faced, needed her to sleep to be able to face Peter in the evening.

A gentle scratch comes to her door a few hours later and slowly pulls Camilla out of the land of dreams.

"Miss Camilla? Are you there?" Mary calls.

Camilla slowly crawls out of her bed and goes to open the door for Mary. "Hey, Mary, is food ready. I think I am starving," Camilla says scratching her eyes awake.

Mary's face morphs into a smile as she looks at Camilla. "Miss Camilla, are you the one that went to the janitor's closer?" She asks sniffling a laugh.

"Yes Mary, I am sorry. I was looking for some cleaning agent, I should have fixed it," Camilla says with a pout. "Did I create much of a trouble for you? I am sorry. I can help clean it up." Camilla feels bad that she messed up the closet for Mary. Now the poor woman will have a lot of work to do because of her.

"No, no, you don't have to help clean it," Mary says with a chuckle.

It must have been that two-faced bitch Jessie that will tell Mary about this -Camilla thinks in her head.

"I don't, mind helping." Camilla insists.

"No, Miss Camilla, you don't have to do anything at all," she says waving her hands. Then her eyes shine as she understands why Camilla is defending herself.

"You think I came here searching for who messed up the supplies?" Mary asks as she laughs lightly.

Camilla's mouth is in an 'o' shape as she gawks at the older woman. If she isn't here because of what Jessie probably told her, why is she here then?

"I came to tell you that dinner is ready but of course, you smell of detergent that's why I asked if you went to the janitor's closet..." Mary explains.

"Oh, I see," Camilla says as she nods her head like a fish.

"Now, now, you need to go take a shower, you don't want to choke the others on the table," Mary says ushering me to the bathroom.

"I will love to choke Jessie though," Camilla mumbles forgetting that Mary is still with her. Seeing Mary's face she bites her tongue fearing Mary's reaction.

Mary laughs and taps Camilla's shoulders. "That makes the two of us, but I like Mr. Peter, so go take a shower, dear."

Camilla is happy to know that she isn't the only one who hates Jessie in that house. At least now she knows she has a partner when it comes to dealing with Jessie.

Camilla washes herself taking her time to scrub off the strong smell of detergent from her body. It is true what they say, that when a person inhales a certain odor for too long, they become immune to it. She was in that Janitor's closet for so long that she didn't even realize how bad the smell had stuck to her body. She carefully scrubbed her body using the scented soaps in the bathroom. When she finishes she puts on a pair of shorts and a black t-shirt over it.

"About time!" Jessie scoffs turning to her plate as soon as Camilla walks into the dining room.

Camilla fists her hands by her side to keep from replying to Jessie. She goes to her seat and settles herself in it. "Good evening, Peter." She beams politely.

Jessie rolls her eyes and taps a spoon on her plate. "Mary! The street rat is here, can we eat now?" She yells.

Peter furrows his brows but says nothing. He only signals to Mary to bring in the food. Mary and Camilla share a secret smile as she goes to direct the kitchen staff to start bringing out the food.

"Camilla, I came by your room earlier, you were sleeping. I am sorry if I woke,"  Peter starts as they wait for the food to arrive.

"Oh, it's nothing. I was so deep asleep I didn't hear you at all." Camilla says releasing an awkward laugh.

Jessie narrows her eyes at the lie Camilla just said and clasps her long manicured fingers together. "But you were swimming in detergents at that same time..." Jessie adds.

Peter's face changes into a deep frown and Camilla bites her lower lip. Jessie has ruined her perfect plan.

"Jessie, if you interrupt this conversation one more time, I will have to ask you to take your food to your room," Peter calmly states.

Jessie's eyes enlarge and she hiccups in shock. Peter doesn't want to consider what she is trying to say. How did Camilla manage to fool everyone in this house?

"Whatever charm you are using on them will blow upon you one day, street rat!" Jessie snaps, getting to her feet.

"And where are you going?" Peter asks not taking his eyes off the plate in front of him.

"I have lost my appetite." She answers with her nose high in the air. "Mary, send my meal up," she says and starts walking away from the dining room

"You have lost your appetite, I don't think you need a meal anymore. Mary does not send anything to her. " Peter growls and Mary nods in agreement.

  "What?" Jessie screeches.

"If you want to eat, you will have to share a meal with us!" Peter says with a shrug.
