Chapter 48: THE ACCOMPLICE

Ethan doesn't want to leave the estate because of Camilla. But it is his duty, he has to go to settle the situation as the alpha. With a heavy heart and a tired brain, he puts the last of his toiletries into his bag closes it up. He lifts the bag and finds Peter watching him from the door.

"Why do you have that face?" Ethan says as he picks up the car keys from the table. He walks to his wristwatch collection and picks up a small gold watch. He removes the leather he is using and returns it to the stack. He turns back to Peter who carries a frown on his face but he isn't saying anything.

"If you won't talk I won't know what you are thinking," Ethan says.

He knows Peter is always against him traveling all the way to the town on his own. But he has no choice. He has to do it. That is his job. He vowed to take care of the people and that was what he is doing, trying to take care of them.

"Ethan you know how dangerous the roads can be." Peter starts trailing behind him as he moves out of the corridor.

Ethan knows just how much better can worry for him but he knew this is beyond that. Other is also feeling guilty about the whole incident. He still blames himself. If he had done his job then no one would have died. He would have found out in good time who was responsible for the food and the silver would have been discovered early enough too. But Peter had let Sandra take charge and look at what happened.

"I knew you were going to say that but," Ethan shrugs and turns to stare at Peter. "Someone has to do it. Or the people will perish." He turns back around and continues walking.

Of course, he also wants to stay and enjoy his nights close to his mate but what can he do? It is his job and he takes it very seriously.

Peter lets go of it and allow him to go. But he walks him to his car. He opens the door for him and Ethan rolls his eyes.

"You'll get old very quickly if you keep worrying this much about me," Ethan jokes and peter smiles softly.

As he closes the door behind Ethan, he leans on the open window of the car. "Ethan I am sorry. I feel like all of this is my fault. I should have never allowed Sandra to take the lead. I should have never allowed her into my life!"

Ethan smiled softly. "Peter, I know that this is what is on your mind. But As I told you earlier, I hold no grudges against you. You are my best friend and I trust you completely. Look at it this way, we were all manipulated in a way. I could have gone there to do it myself but I was letting you do it-"

"But Ethan it is my job to do such things but I fucked up!" Peter says, interrupting Ethan

Ethan breathes gently as he watches the pain in Peter. He will have to deal with it when he gets back. Peter fears that he may not trust him again but it is not that. He trusts him. He has never doubted Peter and Ethan never will. But this situation, he had to handle it himself he will have to take care of it on his own.

"Peter, I told you let's not play the blame game. Don't take the blame upon yourself and don't give it to anybody. Rather let's look for a solution and that's what I am trying to do."

Peter is quiet as he listens to Ethan. He feels a large lump on his heart and he hates the feeling. He just wants to be given a chance to redeem himself and put an end to the problem.

"Look, just take care of the house while I am away. Especially Camilla. You know how much she means to me..."

Peter gives a curt nod, giving silent promises. At least Ethan still trusted him with the most important person in his life. His mate. Peter makes a silent promise to treat Camilla like a golden egg. Ethan must never be disappointed in him again.

Ethan starts the car and Peter pulls back giving him a quick wave of his right hand. Ethan smiles before driving out of the estate and into the main roads.

It is still early in the morning, Ethan had decided to leave in the morning just like Camilla had suggested but he couldn't bring himself to tell her goodbye. He knew he won't be able to handle it if she got sad like she did last night. To avoid being placed in such a position, he left without telling her. But he did of course see her. He went to her room last night and he watched her through the window. Camilla has a habit of leaving her window open. So in the middle of the night when he was sure that she would be sleeping, he shifted to his wolf and went around the house to her room. There he watched her innocent face and he promised himself that things will be better when he returned. He will make her so happy, she will wish she met him earlier.

The thought makes him smile he drives forgetting the ordeals he was going to face in the town.

For a moment, Camilla's thoughts heal him, removing all doubts and leaving behind confidence he has never felt. This is what the mate's bond does. They make you feel unbreakable.

Ethan is driving into the abandoned part of the town and he is happy to see people roaming around. The place is no longer isolated and glooming. There is life to it and slowly Ethan prays in his heart that color will return to It as well.

He drives straight ahead to the packhouse where Adam and his team had set up their laboratory for the tests and cures. He backs up into the parking lot and steps out of the car. He unlocks the car and moves to the entrance of the building.

He hasn't gone far when he hears Max's voice behind him.

"Alpha!" Ethan turns to face him and Max almost falls on the ground in happiness.

"Alpha we have found a cure. Adam has done it! " he says breathlessly. It is as if he ran all the way from where ever he was to come to meet Ethan.

"That is great news." Ethan is elated about the news but he isn't completely happy with Max.

"Why didn't you call to inform me about the result?" Ethan demands from him.

A blush creeps up Max's cheeks and he faces down immediately. "I am sorry, Alpha. I was so intoxicated that night I couldn't bring myself to call you sounding like that. That's why I told Adam to call you."

Ethan sees past his excuses. Max has never been the one to blush about something. He is too loyal to Ethan to a fault. He will not just decide not to call based on intoxication.

"Have you found someone special?" Ethan asks him. The only reason why Max will be blushing and will not call Ethan about something that important had to be something to do with his mate. But Ethan doesn't want to jump to conclusions. He wants him to say it out himself.

"Well," Max begins, rubbing a hand to his left ears which are red at the tips. "I have found my mate, sir..."

Ethan smiles at the revelation. "That's wonderful news. I am very happy for you." Finding your mate is the best thing that can happen to a wolf anywhere. It makes them complete and their powers reach the top of their abilities.

"Thank you, sir... I think we should go in, Adam must be waiting for you," Max rushes out, trying to run away from the topic that is making him blush like a schoolboy.

"Okay, I will let it go. But you and I have to continue this talk!" Ethan laughs seeing his discomfort.

They both walk into the lab and Adam welcomes them. He takes them to the machines he used the test the liquid and points out the silver liquid to them and another dark glossy liquid in a syringe on the work table.

"So, this is the silver we got from the warehouse and this is the one we extracted from the bodies of the infected. After the tests, we discovered they were indeed the same substance." Adam adjusts the rims of his glasses and focuses on the substances again.

"Since we now know that it is silver, we have started extraction, and my team has made a cure to avoid side effects to those who might have also consumed some quantities of it."

Ethan stretches his hand and pats Adam at the back. "Thank you so much, Adam, you really helped me here," Ethan says.

Adam smiles confidently, moving his glasses again. "You know I can do anything for you, Ethan." He chuckles.

He takes Ethan around the room and they observe how the sick people are being taken care of.

"When is your team leaving?" Ethan asks as they get to the end of the mini-clinic they created within the lab.

"Oh, we should leave today. We have trained the personnel at the packhouse clinic on what to do, I am confident they can handle it. The wave is over. You have saved your pack, Alpha Ethan," Adam says congratulating Ethan.

"It is all because of you. Thank you very much."

Ethan leaves the laboratory after saying his goodbyes to Adam and he and Max, proceed to the black hole, where they had thrown Mike. Ethan needed to know what was going on in his head when he decided to have the water poisoned and the people starved. He wanted the names of all involved and he won't rest until he gets it.

"Lower the stairs!" He tells the guards by the hole.

They quickly get to work after Ethan and Max step on the bucket. Three guards join them in the bucket as well. Ethan wants to ask them to return that he can handle it but as he is about to talk Max holds his arm, stopping him.

"Let them do their job, Alpha. It is an honor, " Max whispers to Ethan, and seeing the pride on the guards' faces, he lets them follow.

The bucket is lowered and in no time, they get to the pit where Mike is sitting in a corner. He looks thin and disheveled in just a few weeks of being in the hole. His eyes are bloodshot like someone who has been crying.

"Alpha, please have mercy...." He screams the moment his eyes settles on Ethan.

The guards quickly rush to create a barrier between him and Ethan.

"Please, I can't keep being here. Please, Alpha. You are merciful?! Please!" He screams, trying to reach Ethan but the guards holding him down are not even moving a muscle.

"I came to offer you a ticket out of here." Ethan begins.

Mike falls to the ground in gratitude and the guards let him slip. He hits the ground with a loud thud and Max winces at the impact but Mike doesn't seem to feel it, an effect of the black hole. The longer Mike stays here, the more crazy and unresponsive his body will become.

"Anything you want Alpha, I will say it!" He blurts as tears start spilling from his eyes. "Anything that will take me away from here..."

"Who brought in silver into this town?" Ethan's voice booms into the never-ending tunnel they were in and everywhere goes silent.

The guards are visibly shocked to even hear that there was silver in the town since Adam had kept his discoveries secret.

"Lady Zara!" Mike shrieks before he starts crying hysterically. "Lady Zara. She did it. She brought the silver. I swear I didn't know about it. I didn't know they were injecting it into the water! I only took all the money. I didn't know they were going to kill people...."
