Empty Threats
Irena's POV
"This man here, as you all heard, is a detective working on a case, a crucial case that involves one of us, a highly esteemed member of this noble council," I began.
"Mr. Bob," I turned to look at him, he looked frightened. "Do not fear, your men are alright and you are too, I won't hurt you and I would let no one here hurt you too, and that's a promise. What I need from you is co-operation, " I informed him reassuringly.
He didn't look like he believed me, but I knew he was willing to cooperate.
"So you said Mr. Pompeii here is suspected for the death of a young girl. What did you say her name was again, May?" I asked, standing up and walking towards him.
Bob looked frightened, but he nodded nonetheless.
"Good, thank you. I would like to know Mr. Bob, how long has this investigation been going on, and when did this tragedy occur? Also, what puts Mr. Bob on the suspect list?" I questioned further. "Please don't hesitate to speak up," I quickly added. Bob swallowed and it looked like he was about to speak up.
"Anderson May was reported missing three months ago on the thirteenth of February. She had gone out in the afternoon to see her friend who just arrived from Paris, but May never came back-" he began, he was standing and it bothered me.
"-You," I pointed at a guard, "get him a chair to sit on, there are spare chairs in the area reserved for guests,"
The guard quickly took a chair and placed it next to Mr. Bob, who proceeded to sit down.
"Please continue," I instructed after he had settled down.
"May was reported missing on that given date and three days later on the sixteenth of February, her body was found in the underground sewers of Bucharest. There was no single cut on her, but the autopsy report showed that she was bruised in several places, choked too, and what's even more surprising was the loss of blood," he paused, looking at the crowd, expecting some sort of reaction. But if that was what he wanted, then he wouldn't be getting it. He and his squad are the only humans here, and I'm sure that I'm not the only one that had figured out what the autopsy report meant already.
"You said there was a loss of blood" I inquired, giving him some normalcy.
"Not just a loss of blood, she had died as a result of massive blood loss, during the early period of her death, her skin must have been purely white. She had not more than a pint of blood in her body, it was as if her blood was harvested from her body or something of that sort, as no other liable explanation could be thought of, especially when there were no cuts or skin tears on her body." Bob sounded confused, he even looked more confused. Poor human, I bet he's trying to make sense of the findings.
"Please go on," I urged. I was curious as to how a human managed to trace the death of a girl to the killer; a vampire. It was impressive. The lack of bite marks and any other form of cuts to the skin was enough to ruin and confuse those involved in the investigation, and lead it to a dead end. And it was futile to trace vampires with DNA tests as we have evolved to be smart enough to leave no fingerprints.
Our lack of a DNA source for a DNA database makes it even more difficult to track us. This is because most of us are very old and our DNA would lead to nothing, but only cause confusion.
"May didn't suffer from any disease that causes loss of blood as she was a very healthy young girl," he went on further.
"How old was she?" I asked.
"Sixteen, Anderson May was sixteen years old."
"Thank you, please go on with your narration,"
" Yes, May was a healthy young girl from getting her medical records, so it was even more confusing. The confusion was only lessened when the autopsy further revealed that there was a large swell in her jugular vein as if pressure was applied strongly for a long period-"
She had been fed on hungrily, beastlike even.
"-It seemed as though the swelling on her jugular was caused by its being sucked viciously. But still, it was confusing because the swell was terrible, internal, unnoticed, but terrible, so terrible that it should have left a deep wound on her neck, but her neck was clean of any form of injury. It was as if no form of injury had ever been on her neck, although her parents and close friends had confirmed that she has three small scars on her neck from a time when her cat scratched her while she carried it on her shoulder, and that was from a few years ago, so it must have been a form of identification or recognition among her peers. But upon examination, the scar was gone, there wasn't any form of injury on her. For a long time, it seemed quite supernatural to us, magical because no one had an explanation. Not medically because she had left the house looking normal and even if she had laser scar removal surgery done, it would've taken three to ten days for it to completely erase a scar like that, and considering when her body was found, we could all agree that such quick healing is quite impossible." He looked tired, I could tell that he wasn't a man capable of giving a long speech.
He looked pale and he was taking deep breaths. Is he alright?
"Are you alright?" I was worried about him, he seemed like a man who carries out his duty with a good heart and determination.
You don't get to see a human who managed to track down a vampire every day, this might even be the first case recorded.
He shook his head, he was afraid. The aura we vampires give was a scary one, especially a gathering of the strongest vampire leaders in the world.
"Would you like some refreshments?" I didn't even bother to wait for his reply, he needed energy, "Kjov! Please get this man some cold water and an energy drink," I called out, he would make his pick when it's brought to him.
Bob looked surprised and I smiled at him, "I assured you that you shouldn't be afraid, just work with me, and even if you don't, I'll still ensure that no harm comes your way."
Kjov came back with a bottle of water and energy drink and offered them to Bob. Bob took both. After taking a long gulp of cold water, he opened the energy drink and took a sip.
"What would you use this information for?" He questioned suspiciously and tiredly. Looking at me through untrusting brown eyes.
"Trust me, I support your work, and this information will be of great use to me," I stared at Pompeii as I said the last part, letting him know that the implications would be harsh on him.
"You all are weirdos, another squad would be sent if the head office gets no report from me every thirty minutes," he informed us.
I snorted, " and after what you just saw, you think that'll be a problem for us?" I raised one eyebrow, smiling at him and wondering why he thought that would be a threat after he had seen me make the whole of his troop fall in a deep slumber, and make him do something against his will.
"I don't care. Are you a witch or something?" He questioned looking scared but trying to hide it.
What a waste of time though, we vampires can smell fear and it's one thing we thrive on.
