Once Maya had gone still, it was as if an air of clarity swept through the room. The council members who had been under the spell of the wolf's bane suddenly blinked, as if waking from a deep slumber. They looked around, confusion very evident.

"What happened?" one of them asked, rubbing his eyes. "I feel as if I've been asleep for a hundred years."
