I accompanied the King outside as Sir Karl and the rest of the guards tightened the security around the palace. I could tell the sudden tension was weighing heavily on his mind, so I tried to ease his concern.

“What’s the meeting about today? To commend you for fighting off so many rogues?” I asked, and he let out a low, humorless chuckle.

“No. To pressure me into giving Caldrin the authority to recruit more men for the army,” he said, and I froze.
