Chapter 5

The next morning arrived faster than I expected, and with it came a mixture of anticipation and terror that made my stomach churn.

I had barely slept, my mind racing with thoughts of returning to the beach where everything had changed for me. The place where I had lost my father and gained powers I still didn't fully understand.

"Seraphina, are you ready?" My mother's voice carried a tremor that matched my own nervous energy.

I sat on the edge of my bed, running my fingers over the swimming clothes Marcus had brought me. The fabric felt smooth and expensive, and I wondered what I looked like in them. Would Marcus find me beautiful? The thought made heat rise to my cheeks.

"Almost ready, Mother." I called back, standing carefully and making my way to the door.

As I descended the stairs, I could feel the tension in the house. My mother's anxiety radiated through her aura, and I sensed Marcus's presence as well...his energy felt different today, more intense, more protective.

"Good morning, beautiful." Marcus said softly as I reached the bottom of the stairs, and his words made my heart skip a beat.

"Good morning, Marcus." I replied, trying to keep my voice steady despite the butterflies dancing in my stomach.

My mother approached us, and I felt her hands gently checking my swimming attire, making sure everything was secure and appropriate.

"I've packed some towels and snacks." she said, her voice tight with worry. "And I've spoken to the pack doctor. He'll be on standby in case... in case anything happens."

"Mother, I'll be fine." I assured her, though I wasn't entirely convinced myself.

"We'll stay close to shore." Marcus added, his voice filled with determination. "I won't let anything happen to her."

The drive to the beach was eerily quiet, broken only by the sound of waves growing louder as we approached our destination. My hands trembled slightly, and I clasped them together to stop the shaking.

Marcus must have noticed because he reached over and covered my hands with one of his own. His touch was warm and reassuring, grounding me in the present moment.

"We don't have to do this if you're not ready." he whispered, his breath tickling my ear.

"I need to do this." I whispered back. "I need to understand what happened to me, what I am."

When we arrived at the beach, the familiar scent of salt air and seaweed filled my nostrils, immediately transporting me back to that fateful day a year ago. My entire body tensed, and I instinctively stepped closer to Marcus.

"I can feel it." I whispered, and both Marcus and my mother went silent. "The power is still here. It's calling to me."

My mother grabbed my arm. "Seraphina, maybe we should..."

"No." I said firmly, surprising myself with the strength in my voice.

"I'm done running from this. I'm done being afraid of who I am."

I pulled away from them and walked toward the water's edge, my feet sinking into the warm sand. The waves lapped gently at my toes, and immediately, I felt a surge of energy coursing through my body.

"Seraphina!" Marcus called out, alarm clear in his voice.

But I couldn't stop. Something was pulling me forward, deeper into the water. As the waves reached my knees, then my waist, I felt my consciousness expanding.

Suddenly, I could see.

Not with my physical eyes, but with something deeper, more primal. I could see the ocean floor beneath me, teeming with life. I could see the currents flowing around me like rivers of light. And far below, in the deepest part of the ocean, I could see something else.

A figure waiting for me.

"Father?" I gasped, and water rushed into my lungs, but instead of drowning, I found I could breathe it like air.

The figure rose from the depths, and I recognized the glowing golden armor, the ethereal presence that could only belong to my father.

"My daughter." his voice resonated through the water, filling me with warmth and love. "You've grown so strong."

"Father, I thought you were dead. I thought I had lost you forever."

"Death is not the end for beings like us, Seraphina. I exist now as part of the ocean itself, guardian of the barrier between worlds."

"I don't understand any of this." I confessed, tears mixing with the seawater around me. "What am I supposed to do with these powers? How do I guard the worlds when I can't even see?"

My father's form glowed brighter, and he reached out to touch my face. His touch was warm despite being underwater.

"Your blindness is not a weakness, my child. It allows you to see what others cannot. You perceive the spiritual realm, sense auras, feel the connections between all living things. These gifts make you the perfect guardian."

"But I'm scared, Father. I don't know how to control what's inside me."

"The power will come naturally when you need it most. But remember, you are not alone in this destiny. Your mate will help you, stand beside you, strengthen you when you feel weak."

"My mate?" I asked, thinking immediately of Marcus. "How will I know who it is?"

"You already know." my father said with a smile in his voice. "Your heart has chosen, and the Moon Goddess has blessed the choice. Trust in love, Seraphina. It is the strongest force in any world."

Suddenly, I felt hands grabbing me, pulling me back toward the surface. Marcus's voice reached me through the water, desperate and terrified.

"Seraphina! Please, come back to me!"

As I broke the surface, gasping for air I hadn't realized I needed, I found myself in Marcus's strong arms. He was waist-deep in the water, holding me against his chest, his face etched with fear and relief.

"I thought I lost you." he whispered, his voice breaking. "You were under for so long, and I couldn't reach you. The water kept pushing me back."

"I'm okay." I assured him, wrapping my arms around his neck. "More than okay. I saw him, Marcus. I saw my father."

Behind us, I could hear my mother wading into the water, calling our names anxiously.

"What did he tell you?" Marcus asked, his eyes searching my face intently.

"That I'm not alone." I said, looking directly at him even though I couldn't see his face. "That my mate will stand beside me, help me protect the worlds."

Marcus went very still, and I could feel the change in his breathing, the way his heart rate increased where his chest pressed against mine.

"Seraphina." He said carefully, "what are you saying?"

Instead of answering with words, I reached up and cupped his face in my hands, just as I had done yesterday in my living room. But this time, there was no hesitation, no fear of rejection.

"I'm saying that the Moon Goddess doesn't make mistakes." I whispered. "And my heart chose you long before my father confirmed it."

Marcus's response was to kiss me with a passion that stole my breath away. This kiss was different from the tentative ones we had shared before. This was a claiming, a promise, a declaration of love that had been building between us for years.

When we finally broke apart, both breathing heavily, I heard my mother's voice from behind us.

"Well, it's about time you two figured it out." she said, and I could hear the smile in her voice despite her earlier worry. "I was beginning to think you'd both be too stubborn to admit your feelings."

"You knew?" I asked, turning in Marcus's arms to face her direction.

"Sweetie, everyone knew except you two. The way that boy looks at you, the way you light up when he's around...it was obvious to everyone but yourselves."

Marcus laughed, the sound rumbling through his chest where I still pressed against him.

"I guess we weren't as subtle as we thought." He said, pressing a kiss to the top of my head.

As we made our way back to shore, I felt a completeness I had never experienced before. The powers inside me felt more controlled, more purposeful. My father's blessing, my mother's love, and Marcus's unwavering devotion had given me the strength to embrace my destiny.

"So what happens now?" Marcus asked as we sat on the sand, wrapped in towels, his arm around my shoulders.

"Now we prepare." I said, leaning into his warmth.

"The worlds won't protect themselves, and I have a feeling our real challenges are just beginning." I added.

"Whatever comes." Marcus said, tightening his hold on me, "we face it together."

"Together." I agreed, knowing that with him by my side and the power of both my parents flowing through me, I was ready for whatever destiny had in store.

The beach that had once been the site of my greatest trauma had become the place of my awakening. And as the sun set over the ocean, painting the sky in brilliant oranges and pinks that I could somehow sense despite my blindness, I knew that this was just the beginning of our story.

The worlds had their guardians.

The Moon Goddess had blessed our union.

And love, as my father had promised, would guide us through whatever darkness lay ahead.
