We went back up the mountain in the morning.

I never expected to walk through those gates on purpose. But my daughter had her treasures in that fortress, and she made it very clear over breakfast that we were not leaving without them.

The wardens opened the gates before we reached them. Nobody asked us anything. Nobody stopped us. Whatever those gates had been the night before, that morning they were just doors.
